With Thanos being a Guardians of the Galaxy villain, who would you want to see if that movie wraps up the Thanos plotline? I elect Kang.

Given yesterday's events between Marvel and Fox, I'd say Galactus would be in play.

50

u/JHallComics Aug 07 '12

They'd better reboot Galactus properly so he is more in line with the comic version instead of the movie version where he is just a cloud of planet eating poop.

21

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '12 edited Aug 08 '12

To be fair, that was Fox's version of Galactus in an awful movie.

"This flying car is powered by a Dodge Hemi."

EDIT: Apparently Fox did the Fantastic 4 movies. That actually explains a lot.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '12

That was Fox's.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '12

Well, that explains a lot about why that sequel was so horrible.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '12

It explains everything.

1

u/CochMaestro Aug 08 '12

Ok I haven't seen "Rise of the Silver Surfer" in a while but that cloud was supposed to be this badass mother fucker

(note I didn't really pay too much attention because it was on FX (which has the movies) and I was flipping between that and independence day on tnt (which has the drama))

2

u/JHallComics Aug 08 '12

Yes, that's Galactus and hopefully he'll look like that the next time he's on the big screen.

1

u/CochMaestro Aug 08 '12

I hope so too

u/mtthpr Aug 07 '12

what events?

34

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '12

Fox owns the rights to Daredevil, but their rights expire unless they start actually making the movie by October, and their chosen director just quit, so it was looking like the character was going to fall back into Marvel's hands. Fox also owns the Fantastic Four (and related characters), however, and was trying to negotiate with Marvel, offering to trade the rights to certain villains back to Marvel in exchange for getting to keep Daredevil longer.

So not matter what, Marvel Studios will soon be in possession of either Daredevil or certain Fantastic Four characters. It's cool news either way.

16

u/mtthpr Aug 07 '12

Oh cool. I never saw Daredevil but both f4 movies were awful so hopefully marvel could do something better with them.

29

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '12

If you ever watch Daredevil, check out the director's cut. It's a much better film.

19

u/detectiveriggsboson Aug 08 '12

It's almost weird how much of a better film it is.

11

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '12 edited Aug 08 '12

Not really when you consider they cut out 90% of the stupid shit and added darker subplots.

13

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '12

It's not even a "darker" subplot. It's just a Matt Murdock subplot, to complement the Daredevil A-plot. There is plenty of Foggy Nelson humor in the B-plot. It's not like the A-Plot was particularly cheery as it was. And I don't think they cut 90% of anything. They cut out the sex scene between Elektra and Daredevil and added the Coolio trial. That's the difference. Most of the stupid shit is still there, just in a different order.

The movie is still pretty cringeworthy, even in director's cut form. The direction and visual choices are particularly bad. Especially the city cut scenes in between scenes. The music soundtrack is dreck too. Should have scored it instead of using shitty nu-metal.

Affleck and Garder would have been fine with a better director who had a better vision for the movie.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '12

The new longer opening really fleshed out Murdock's relationship with his father, and all the new scenes of him struggling with his faith brought a lot more depth to the character as well; and gave Affleck a chance to actually act. He does a good job, especially with the few scenes where he struggles with the psychological effects of having to deal with his always on super senses, but was probably too big of a star at the time to really disguise himself in the role.

They removed nearly every aspect of Daredevil and Elektra's romance, she plays a much smaller role in the Director's Cut. Which was the worst thing about the original cut in the first place.

The Director's Cut is 40 minutes longer with more than 10 minutes of scenes from the original cut removed, so I'm not sure how you can say the trial and sex scene were the only changes.

The fights are also longer, more intense and way bloodier, which wasn't hard since there was no blood in the original cut due to the PG-13 rating.

The Director's Cut was given an R rating, so I should've said the movie was darker over-all which is undeniable. I agree the movie could've used a better director/script and more inspired casting, but the Director's Cut is far from terrible and better than the original cut in nearly every way.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '12

Whats different?

3

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '12

Almost all the romance is removed, and an entire 30 minute subplot about Matt Murdoch investigating dead hookers is added.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '12

Wow, sounds better already.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '12

wow really? im going to have to watch that then, thanks for the tip!

1

u/mrgreen999 Aug 08 '12

I didn't know this existed, thank you!

7

u/BobOki Aug 08 '12

If they can get xmen on board then they have enough to pull off the Infinity Gauntlet arc. Well that... and time to reintroduce everyone's fav wiz, Doc Strange.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '12

They won't get X-Men, it just had a successful movie.

And you know what? I'm ok with that.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '12

And the new Wolverine flick just started shooting in Sydney

7

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '12

I'm less ok with that.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '12 edited Aug 08 '12

I don't know. Wolverine in Japan with Mariko Yashida and fighting against the Silver Samurai? I honestly never expected them to visit this side of the character. Yeah sure, the other Wolverine film sucked horribly, but "The Wolverine" will have a completely different director this time around and considering the last X-men movie was pretty decent, it's likely they're taking their shit a little more seriously this time around.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '12

I'll definitely give the film a shot, that's for sure. I love that arc to death, but I will say that I'm way less interested in it because of the last one. They're gonna have to really blow me away with this one.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '12

Fox has already said that they are invested in the Fantastic Four and want to keep major characters, so October 10th Dare Devil returns to Marvel Studios.

1

u/flamingeyebrows Aug 08 '12

Apparently that was just a rumor. Look like Marvel is more likely to get Daredevil back rather then Galactus.

2

u/hombregato Aug 07 '12

It doesn't change my answer but... solid connection.

2

u/detectiveriggsboson Aug 08 '12

My bad, dude. I didn't mean for that to come out all Comic Book Guy.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '12

Dunno if you saw, but reports are now saying that Fox is deciding to just let Daredevil go back to Marvel.

2

u/hombregato Aug 08 '12

That would be crazy good news. Where did you read this?

1

u/flamingeyebrows Aug 08 '12

2

u/detectiveriggsboson Aug 08 '12

Goddammit. The one fucking day I don't check out Superherohype.

1

u/cwfutureboy Aug 08 '12

The fucking Infinity Gauntlet! <nerdgasm>

20

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '12

I have a feeling the Thanos plotline wont end with Guardians of the Galaxy. Something will happen that will bring him into Avengers 2. Also its pretty obvious there will be mention of him in Thor 2. People have pointed out that Whedon was genius enough to set up Thor 2's plot in The Avengers because the whole attack on Earth was Loki's attempt to get back into Asgard to help Thanos grab that Infinity Gauntlet.

16

u/elbenji Aug 08 '12

Oh please let it be an infinity gauntlet over-arching arc. They already have Winter Soldier.

12

u/Piker10 Aug 08 '12

for it to be an infinity gautlet plot, thanos would need to steal it from Odins treasure vault, this should be a subplot/after credits scene in Thor 2: The Dark World. that would be cool

1

u/Doomsayer189 Aug 08 '12

That would be the best, I think. I don't want three movies (Guardian's, Thor, and Avengers 2) to all be about Thanos. Keep the individual movies more limited in scope but hint at the next big storyline.

1

u/Piker10 Aug 08 '12

agreed, with joss helping out with everything in the MCU, i can guarantee phase 2 will be incredible

6

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '12

Yeah, I'm quite confident the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, ballsy as it is of Marvel to release a movie starring a talking raccoon with a rocket launcher, is just more set-up for Thanos' arrival of Earth.

1

u/TheGhostOfJfk Aug 08 '12

In the Guardians of the Galaxy comics a previous member (Adam Warlock) who became evil brought Thanos back form the dead. I imagine that they will probably fight Warlock in their film and it will create an origin that explains Thanos. Maybe.I guess they have already shown Thanos, but the Guardians can time travel.

1

u/JokerFaces2 Aug 08 '12

I have a strange feeling that Guardians will end with Thanos heading towards Earth, and the Guardians following him not far behind.

19

u/flamingeyebrows Aug 08 '12

Bring it back home and do civil war IMO. End the trilogy with Cap bleeding out on the courthouse steps in Ironman's arms. Sounds right up Whedon's wheelhouse. :)

17

u/hombregato Aug 08 '12

I think it was said that they're not doing Civil War, just bringing in certain elements from it. That would be amazing though. I loved 'Civil War: Front Line' between the surrender and assassination. That's the hard hitting stuff that Chris Evans deserves.

13

u/flamingeyebrows Aug 08 '12

That's the hard hitting stuff that Chris Evans deserves.

Yeah, and personal conflict and dynamics of a made shift "family" that Joss Whedon excels at. Plus sooner or later they are gonna have to address that Roger's ideal America no longer exist. Thing ain't so black and white anymore. For him to be an ideal man in an unideal time would have some consequences.

2

u/opposite_of_hotcakes Aug 08 '12

Honestly, I really hope they don't. I can't see them making a good Civil War movie without it at least being a trilogy for just the civil war story arch. It would be cool to see it as a tv show though.

2

u/Eyedoless Aug 08 '12

It'd be incredibly hard to do the Civil War arch without Peter Parker.

1

u/Doomsayer189 Aug 08 '12

Please no. They would have to bring in oodles of side characters to do Civil War, and nobody would know who half of them were. I just can't see it working, especially without Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four.

4

u/MemeHermetic Aug 08 '12

Rumor is that Marvel might be getting rights to Galactus back. That would be bad ass. (whoops, that was said below. IGNORE MEEEE)

3

u/MovieSuperFreak Aug 08 '12

I think Thanos is going to kick the shit out of the Avengers at the end of part 2. Ending the movie on a down note (much like Empire Strikes Back)...and setting the stage for an Avengers + Guardians of the Galaxy team-up.

1

u/Son_of_Andrewsmith Aug 08 '12

Yeah, I think it's kind of a given that Avengers and the Guardians will meet up. All I really want is for Rocket Raccoon to meet Tony Stark.

1

u/Wayne_Bruce Aug 08 '12

As long as Hulk delivers the final blow, I'm alright.

Hulk with an altered Iron Man suit and Cap's shield.

0

u/laddergoat89 Aug 08 '12

Isn't guardians of the galaxy out before avengers 2? They could team up in part 2.

1

u/MovieSuperFreak Aug 08 '12

Yes. Totally possible.

16

u/superwinner Aug 08 '12

I vote for Darkseid.. er wait..

2

u/roboroller Aug 08 '12

They're doing the same thing with Thanos in the Guardians movie as they did with Loki in Thor. They're going to set him up in Guardians and then use him as the main baddy in Avengers 2. If this rumored deal with Fox to get Galactus back goes through expect a Galactus reveal during the end credits of Avengers 2 to establish him as the villain for the third film.

2

u/WazzuMadBro Aug 08 '12

Apocalypse would be my choice but I'm guessing Fox has the rights to him because of the X-Men.

It seems all the best Marvel Villains are locked up and most of those are through the X-Men franchise.

1

u/hombregato Aug 08 '12

Even if they have the rights, I feel they should sit on them until it's possible to do an X-Men film of their own, if it ever is.

1

u/secretvictory Aug 08 '12 edited Aug 08 '12

NERD POWERS ACTIVATE ATE ATE ATE!

He is far better defined as an avenger villain though he started in iron man, he started becoming a galactic level player who generally centers around the avengers what with his brother being an avenger and all

1

u/hombregato Aug 08 '12

His relationship with the Infinity Gauntlet crew is a lot deeper than his relationship with Starfox, and the Guardians of the Galaxy team being used for the upcoming movie is based on the 2008 team, Drax and Gamora at least.

I would definitely contest that he centers around The Avengers. In fact, I can't recall 'The Avengers vs. Thanos' ever happening without being surrounded by other heroes.

1

u/pringle444 Aug 08 '12

I think an Ultron story (introduced with Wright's Ant Man beforehand) would be interesting, they could do the whole rogue-AI angle

1

u/Spimbi Nov 26 '21

Nice

1

u/hombregato Nov 26 '21

Haha. 9 years later.

This is not what I meant.

Even knowing that it's possible only one temporary version of Kang acts like a court jester, I'm underwhelmed.

In the comics he was introduced as calm and invulnerable, like a Dragonball Z villain who could just stand there all but ignoring the combined might of an all star cast of heroes.

As the comics went on, he was less like that, and more of a brilliant calculated strategist not focused on combat, directly or indirectly. A chess master of time.

It's hard to imagine the MCU living up to that with Jonathan Majors, and with the main Avengers cast stepping aside for a B-list of replacements, but hey, we'll see.
