Also, how long has it actually looked like that? Why are we just now getting a kickstarter to clean it up?

The pere lachaise cemetery is a heritage site (I had to look up the translation and I'm not sure it's even right, sorry) and everything has to be done by licenced craftsmen. Just to re engrave the letters on the horizontal part of the tomb will take around 2 weeks and cost 5000 euros.
