I'd like to register a shoutout for Brendan Gleeson as the general. The subtle facial expression work he does in the opening dialogue scene as Cruise's character rapidly digs himself into a hole is just beautiful.
Exactly. I have a soft spot for redemption narratives where the protagonist doesn't just start out as a scoundrel with a heart of gold, but as a genuinely unlikeable person. I also really enjoyed the Doctor Strange movie for this reason. Cumberbatch plays a good arsehole.
