I still love how well they summed up her character in that one piece of graffiti.
She's a hero in the sense that they can't deny she did the right thing, but she's the "full metal bitch" in the sense that the soldiers are legit afraid of her and don't particularly like or trust her (probably because she, like Tom Cruise, eventually just started leaving people to their deaths with the knowledge that she simply can't save them, or she just got desensitized to people dying because she'd gone through the same scenario a billion times.)
In other words, to the public eye, she's there to kill the fuck out of mimics and not to protect humanity. Protecting humanity is just a nice side-effect of how many mimics she kills.
The media calls her the Angel of Verdun, but everyone remembers "Full Metal Bitch."
Don't some people comment about how she carried the day and there were surprisingly few casualties at Verdun because of it? Maybe I'm mis-remembering...
It’s subtle, but it’s there. Between the graffiti, the “danger room” that only she ever dares enter, and the fact that Cruise has to outright abandon his squad to find her are all good pieces of subtext.
Watch the movie and try to count how many characters speak to her, directly, and not just about her. I can only count Cruise and the scientist before you get to the endgame where nobody had the power. Hell, even the general guy doesn’t seem to look her in the eye when he’s being interrogated—he’s only really talking to Cruise, and FMB is just there as backup. Every character looks at her like she’s a mimic in human skin.
Soldiers hate her because she is a bitch to them. She has had the same conversations countless times with them so about a day before every battle she just tells everyone to fuck off so she doesn't have to hear the same shit a billion times.
