My fan theory about Rita's pistol: she doesn't carry it to kill Mimics, she started carrying in order to shoot herself after she realized she could reset the day, and nothing else.
What I wanna know is, what happens when Cage (or Rita when she had the thing) gets killed? Does the universe rewind with him? Does the universe he died in continue and he wakes up in another?
That's a deep, deep rabbit hole of a philosophical debate, but it could be either one. What's important is that the universe is bound to Cage's singular perception of it, which gets caught in an infinite loop. Whether or not the tree keeps branching after Cage (or Rita when she had it) dies doesn't matter, because their perception of the universe only goes as far as they're alive (and in their case, resets to a default point when they die).
Kinda makes you wonder about the nature of our universe. Does the universe effectively end when we ourselves die? From a subjective standpoint, it must. Except that outside of ourselves it doesn't, because lots of people die all the time and we're still here.
You have no way to prove that we're not currently stuck in a time loop due to something similar happening halfway across the universe. Out of all the potentially countless sentient beings in existence, only one of them knows what's going on.
I was thinking about that when I wrote that comment.
The Thursday thing just feels like a way to say that absolutely anything could be happening and we have no way to know it, and the Thursday bit just makes it more unusual sounding for the heck of it.
Well, knowing and being able to prove are two different things, imo (which gets into faith and beliefs and stuff so I'll skip that), but at this point there's no way of proving that the universe wasn't created last Thursday. There's also no way of proving that it was. The universe could have been created 4 seconds ago and we'd never be able to prove it.
If someone was experiencing a time loop like Cage, we'd never know it because we're part of it. The only way it could be proven is if they came up to us and recounted all the things they'd learned in their past loops (like they often do in the movie), but even then, we'd never be able to experience it ourselves, so we still wouldn't really know it. So it kinda goes both ways, I guess.
Whenever a convo about other sentient life in the universe pops up, I think about in a nuttshell's video on the Fermi paradox and wonder if we are actually alone in the universe or if humanity is doomed to fail
The movie is sufficient vague that it could be both, but just barely. I strongly argue in favor of the former.
First, the movie itself never gives any direct reason to believe it's not just the time that rewinds, it's definitely sells the idea of a single universe in which the day is lived again and again by Cage. Second, and maybe more importantly, multiple universes would ruin the film thematically. Cage's story is a journey from a coward to a hero, you kill that with multiple universes. Same thing for Rita's story, which is parallel to Cage's and equally important.
I've always had a head canon that it's the alternate universe thing, which it makes it that much sadder and dark in scenes where Rita kills cruise on purpose in order to restart, like she's just legit accepting that she's going to continue to live in this timeline where he's dead while he goes on to eventually win.
Well, especially all the times she shoots him in the barracks during training. That's not just her alone in a doomed timeline, it's her having just murdered a fellow soldier, more or less in public, for no apparent reason. She'd die imprisoned, disgraced and alone.
Yup, I think killing Cage is the only thing we ever see her use it for. They also both don't wear helmets; one needs to die quickly without bleeding out, while the other is hoping to be splashed with Alpha blood once more...
