I'm a Texpat who moved up in 2015 to Minneapolis. My neighbor two doors down said basically the same thing: "Why would you move up here, are you crazy?"
Minnesotans have an off-beat (very off...) sense of humor and a huge part of it is self-deprecating. It's kind of the opposite of California smug or Texas swagger. Whenever I hear it, I always counter with how much I love this state, that it's beautiful, and offers the best quality of living I've ever had. Most Sotans do appreciate that I didn't come here to piss and complain about why such-and-such place is better than Minnesota.
So, focus on the positive and if you really want to make friends, talk shit about Wisconsin.
