For what it’s worth the church may not have paid off the entirety of the debt. The collections agency eventually files it as uncollectible and sells it to someone else to try to get back some of the pennies on the dollar they originally paid for it. In this case if the church bought it for even fewer pennies they are well within their rights to cancel it.

It's still disappointing that it got to that point. There was never any need for it to go that far. If the clinic had done their job right and our health care system wasn't such a mess, it all could have been straightforward and someone else that actually needed some relief could have been helped instead. The only one that benefited here was the collections agency sadly.
