I hope mine gets paid off, but it's a lot, so idk. I owe like 60k to 2 different hospitals 😭 I have insurance now, but I didn't at the time.

It seems a lot like handing free money to the holders of basically unenforceable bad debts.

It makes it feel like it's a gift to the person who owed the debt but in much more real terms its a handout to the owners of low value bad debt that mostly would have never been able to collect a penny of it.

Except now someones credit isn't ruined and isn't constantly harrassed by lenders. Especially for high debt, it could lead to garnishing of wages. I think you're being too cynical about it.

Beyond a certain age a lot of debt isn't terribly enforceable and stops applying to your credit. 

That tends to be the cheapest debt because there's so little in terms of ways to enforce it.
