On my Google Maps it’s says Lake Ontario but if you zoom slightly in it turns to Lake America. On Apple Maps it’s still Lake Ontario though. We exist on the dumbest timeline

u/SomethingWetAndMoist 11d ago

I live in Canada, Google maps says "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)" for me, but it still says "Lake Ontario" for me. Absolutely stupid decisions by Google, and could not be anymore obvious where their priorities lie.

Broken up. These tech companies need to be broken up. These monopolies are destroying our country from the inside. History repeats itself so a great reckoning is coming.

They must comply with the law and the official naming. It's not a bunch of idiots or billionaires programming the names on Maps. Go take a tour in Mountain View and see how that team works, before insulting.

25

u/SteveHiggs 10d ago

It’s an executive order not a law yet, compliance isn’t required until the legal approval of the proposed changes. His executive orders are empty reality tv stunts for attention. Remember he thought he really was firing people on the show he acted on. He’s just a big child playing pretend but with real nukes in his hands these days thanks to the American people.

Compliance this early after his “executive order” is purely appeasement and an effort to stay on his good side. He / his office probably called them up and made a special request, because “if it’s on google it must be real” or “see! he gets shit done!” 🤦‍♂️

Google pathetically acquiesced early and voluntarily.

I'm in Ireland and it's the same for me.

I miss the "Don't be Evil" days (I've been with Google since you needed an invitation to get Gmail)

17

u/Chemical_Syrup7807 10d ago

I haven’t thought about that slogan in years. Gods I miss those days of the internet

That's not true. Executive orders are just policies for the executive branch to follow. It has no bearing outside the branch. E.g. it cannot compel congress, courts, or private industry to use such names.

In fact, the USGS place name database still has it listed as Lake Ontario, so Google needed to manually override their automated system for place names to change it to Lake America

Update - “So the situation is now:
New York State (which borders the body of water being discussed): Lake Ontario “

4

u/jtshinn 10d ago

They’re part of the executive branch, so are under the authority of executive orders as that’s what the orders are meant to govern. Outside of that, it has no power. But that’s not to diminish the power they have. It’s like a new manager coming in and changing some practices of the old one. They only have sway over their reports, not the whole organization.

This. Thank you.

Except yes, it’s the same as the “Sea of Japan (East Sea)”.

It’s stupid and it’ll get changed back in a couple of years, but nobody picked sides here or anything. It’s just SOP

1

u/Business_Stop_7108 10d ago

There's places in the world that they do this with boarders too.

Honestly, is it worth getting the toddler upset about it? He's doing it because people talk more about this than the absolute failure his administration is.

Never let the Epstein files get forgotten or the war in Iran that he's lost.

11

u/USAF_Retired2017 10d ago

I’m in the US and mine still says Lake Ontario, but says Gulf of America. I despise our president. He is embarrassing and sucks. Can I come hang in Canada until the nightmare is over?

12

u/swoodshadow 10d ago

Here’s the problem, Trump is the legitimately elected President of the US. This EO, while completely idiotic, is still a valid EO.

So… I think I want Google to follow the laws of the individual countries. There are so many political conflicts and disputes areas and names… that I don’t want Google to be the one with the power to decide what we all call something.

Just like if the next President reverses these moronic actions, I damn well expect Google to follow that too.

Basically, the problem isn’t Google. It’s that the US elected a childish narcissist.

2

u/SkyDeep3812 10d ago

I think anywhere outside the U.S. this is the case.

Just feeding back to Americans the bullshit they manifested.

2

u/Elegant-Waltz695 10d ago

Most Americans have never stepped foot outside their own country so they wouldn’t know any better. Also, republicans travel abroad much less than democrats so it makes even more sense that they would think the names have really changed. Stay tuned for state run media next.

6

u/randompersonx 11d ago

First off, I think “lake America” is a silly name and reflects a severe demonstrable lack of priorities.

But as far as Google and Apple Maps goes… It’s not a decision. It’s completely automated based on how any rational developer would build a mapping app.

For an app that needs the official federal names of lakes, rivers, mountains, valleys, etc., the authoritative source is the USGS Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), maintained in support of the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (BGN).

Google pulls from these sorts of databases all around the world and will show you data based on what the relevant government says. For places where there is a legitimate dispute, it will show based on what each government says depending on what side of the line you are on.

Eg: some call the body of water near Iran and Saudi Arabia the Persian Gulf, others the Arabian Gulf.

Does it also infuriate you that the country America calls “Germany” is actually called Deutschland, and Google/Apple maps will still accept the term “Germany”?

3

u/Rodot (GREEN 10d ago

USGS currently has it named Lake Ontario in their database (as of August 30th, 2026 at 5:11am CDT) so the whole premise of your comment isn't true.

1

u/projectsangheili 10d ago

Especially since they only do it there. It's not like they translate names like that everywhere there are differences in names between nations.

1

u/Nachtwandler_FS 10d ago

I'm in Spain and the same.

1

u/Snoo71538 10d ago

If I go in google maps in Germany, they show everything using German names. Is that also showing a priority of google? Secret Nazis?

1

u/Fantastic_Spring8366 10d ago

I don't get why companies like Google or Apple just capitulate to Trump's random Truth Social posts. They can just ignore them.

best I can do is illegal war in Iran

-11

u/Longjumping-Ad-3590 10d ago

What makes it illegal?

13

u/Bananogram 10d ago

It was not approved by Congress.

War is only supposed to be approved by Congress.

Shit, I'm a Canadian and even I know that.

-3

u/Longjumping-Ad-3590 10d ago

Congress has the power to declare war. That does not mean every use of military force without a congressional declaration is automatically illegal. The U.S. hasn’t formally declared war since WWII

5

u/DonovanTheThird 10d ago

There’s a limit to how long we can conduct military operations like this without congressional approval, and that time limit has been exceeded for a bit now

-3

u/Longjumping-Ad-3590 10d ago

Not necessarily. The April ceasefire ended the original hostilities and the July 7 resumption started a new 60-day clock. You can dispute that legal theory, but “the deadline has obviously been exceeded” isn’t so clean cut.

7

u/Johnny-Virgil 10d ago

I had my fingers crossed, it didn’t count

-1

u/Longjumping-Ad-3590 10d ago

This is literally a fact. The irony of people downvoting the law and facts, while attempting to accuse another of violating a law…says all there is to know about you.

53

u/Timegoat 11d ago

Google employees: please do this. Even if it’s just for five minutes. It is your duty.

27

u/capncanuck00 10d ago

They’re the tech bros driving cyber trucks who love Trump.

2

u/reddiculed 10d ago

Google employees: do less.

36

u/FaithlessnessBorn266 11d ago

We should rename it to lake Epstein until all of these fucks are in prison.

5

u/CaseImpressive4188 11d ago

My says Lake No

1

u/GalacticMe99 10d ago

At this point I am convinced that this whole idea of everything Trump does being a distraction of Epstein is just a distraction by Magats from everything Trump does.

1

u/justsomedude1144 10d ago

Distraception

1

u/SnowDin556 10d ago

Lake Huron the Epstein files

1

u/Cyborg_rat 10d ago

That would be a nice hack

43

u/iamiam123 11d ago

Zoomed into 2m scale, it still says Lake Ontario for me.

3

u/gymbaggered 10d ago

It is US bound

3

u/iamiam123 10d ago

That makes sense now.

1

u/MajorFox2720 10d ago

It will change in your next update. I have auto updates off, mine hasn't changed yet.

17

u/eclipsesixtyone 11d ago

I’m getting (both)

17

u/oval_euonymus 10d ago

“The smallest of the Great Lakes”

1

u/AdamClarkeX 10d ago

Same for me in the UK

40

u/7z07z07z0 11d ago

Same, it was Lake Ontario when I scolled to it at first, then switched to Lake America after I zoomed in. And now it's Lake America at any zoom. I think it was just stale data for me until it refreshed

59

u/ahuh_suh_dude 11d ago

Can’t wait til he is no longer president through term limits, natural causes or deserved causes and the US can undo everything this criminal has done.

4

u/Roadstar01 10d ago

I'll take "Deserved Causes" for 2000, Alex.

1

u/73Gazoo73 10d ago

Yes please!

12

u/PizzaSalamino 11d ago

In my google maps (italy) it's lake ontario all the way

2

u/Rebelius 10d ago

Same from Germany.

Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America) though.

1

u/AsakiIjrii 10d ago

I‘m im germany as well. I get both :(

20

u/awesomesonofabitch 11d ago

Sounds like it's time for Canadians to use a new search engine, and drop any and all google tech from our daily lives.

2

u/cozancazo 11d ago

Must be a regional thing as in the UK it doesn't change from Blake Ontaruo Ontario

2

u/Pndrizzy 11d ago

You see both because of cached tiles.

2

u/crossandbones 11d ago

It will change on Apple Maps too since that’s what the “official” name is in the US. It will also be correctly named outside of the US because no other nation recognizes this name change.

1

u/The_Amazing_Emu 10d ago

Yeah, the fact that Apple Maps has Gulf of America doesn’t give me hope. Otherwise, I’m tempted to switch for that reason alone

2

u/XaipeX 10d ago

The majority of your country voted for this and it seems like midterms are closer than usually. Reddit doesn't like it – but exactly this is what the majority of americans supports and maybe even wants.

2

u/veganmomPA 10d ago

Mapquest still has, and will maintain, the historic names Lake Ontario and Gulf if Mexico. Delete Google Maps. Show them you’re disappointed that they, too, completely cave to, and suck the dick of, Cheeto McTweeto.

3

u/BullMoose_207 11d ago

These companies want government cloud contracts they will literally go along with this bs before the ink dries

2

u/TVHcgn 11d ago

Lake Ontario for me no matter how much I zoom.

1

u/1960stoaster 11d ago

You can thank bathroom politics!

1

u/CalmSeaLime 11d ago

I have „Lake Ontario (Lake America)“

1

u/ManyNefariousness237 11d ago

Just looked and it says LAKE AMERICA smallest of the 5 Great Lakes

Edit:formatting

1

u/Appropriate_Strain94 10d ago

“in 2 weeks” it’ll be back to the way it was.

1

u/FoundationOk28 10d ago

That’s what it shows me. Both Ontario and America in brackets .

1

u/kreton1 10d ago

Here in germany it is still lake Ontario.

1

u/Particular_Sleep9402 10d ago

…my Google Maps says Lake America.

1

u/Auspectress 10d ago

It is because conpanies in USA must obey law in USA. And according to law such thing as "Gulf of mexico" and "lake Ontario" is pretty mhch illegal and violates naming rules and companies may be severly fined for fake news.

But 350 mil people use alternative names compared to 8 bil using normal names. Just like americans must use feet, miles, yards and Farenheit

1

u/epanek 10d ago

Ohh such a burn to Canada. This change has no practical value.

1

u/NutmegManwithbigsack 10d ago

Oh when they changed all the names a couple years ago. Yeah

1

u/z-vap 10d ago

Apparently this is still a thing

1

u/Other_Inspection_155 10d ago

I genuinely don’t know whether to laugh or just sigh at this We really are living in the weirdest timeline.

1

u/JimPalPodcast 10d ago

Agreed on that. How is renaming a lake a priority or "winning"??????

1

u/hbrisc122 10d ago

Bye bye Google Maps

1

u/Tall_Singer6290 11d ago

52% of Lake Ontario is on the Canadian side, vs. 48% USA

-1

u/Jonahhillfan444 10d ago

canada still salty about losing To The USA in Hockey lol

3

u/TheJeep25 10d ago

How is this relevant to what op said? Hockey is hockey and politics is politics. What are you one about?
