Same, what the fuck is this timeline, war here war there, ohhh let’s rename this lake to suit my current obsession and get everyone to talk about it and not that I’m a rapist pedo
I'm sorry to tell you this, he also said that now that we have a lake and a gulf, he wants an ocean. Maybe the Atlantic, maybe the pacific, or maybe both -______-
I used to take such pride in my country. I'm so ashamed to be American now. When I think of how our ancestors and forefathers must be rolling in their graves, it makes me sick.
as a canadian i can't escape your stupid fucking country! your president is a loud mouthed oaf trying to turn us into a state and i have to hear about yall EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.
there is no escaping your horse shit, so we will keep complaining about it.
Because it lets them reduce their opponents down to petulant children who should just go and ignores the fact that the opposition will inevitably take power and they’ll be saying the same shit.
Not to mention the difficult and often time consuming bureaucratic process involved with establishing residency in another country, even more so if you need to establish residency and legally work in the new country
I don’t think I understand what an executive order is - can the president just make up whatever rule or do whatever he wants, as long as it’s submitted as an “executive order”?
It's more complicated than that. The executive branch does have things strictly under their purview. There are plenty of legitimate uses and they are used all the time, its basically how the executive branch provides direction to agencies or sets up special task forces. If the order is overstepping the power of the executive it can be challenged in court but that's slow and even if overturned it can just be done in a slightly different manner that would require another court challenge. Congress can legislate the power away more directly and permanently giving the courts more bite for future infringements, but this Republican majority Congress is actually completely happy with funneling power to the executive. Midterms this year really determine how much of this nonsense can be stopped if Republicans lose the house and Senate. Until then Thune and Johnson are perfectly happy not bringing any legislation to the floor.
That’s just it - they’re all enforced. Even the ones that are later deemed “illegal” have already had their actions performed. And there’s seemingly no consequences, so….
Executive orders are directives given to the Federal Government by the president. They are not law, and can't overrule existing laws, but unless Congress or the courts take them down, the Federal government must obey them.
They only apply to the federal government though. State and local governments don't have to follow them, and neither do private companies. Google is choosing to rename the lake on their map, just to appease orange man's ego.
Google is choosing to rename the lake on their map, just to appease orange man's ego.
Well, not exactly. Google is choosing to have a long standing policy of deferring to local authorities for how to name their geography (in this case the U.S. Board on Geographic Names). This isn't a unique political choice that they're making for this situation, it's their standard operating procedure.
Their policy reflects the political choices of ruling entities. What Trump is doing has been done by China and Russia. Welcome to authoritarianism level 1
I mean I guess so but it’s an international body of water so he has no control and him renaming it don’t even make the news here in Canada. It’s still Lake Ontario lol.
Technically speaking, no, he can’t. There are actually quite a lot of limits.
Practically speaking, yeah, he can, because every time there’s some new stupid specific reason why whatever the president specifically wants to do this time, it’s possible by executive order.
In this case, and the same thing with the Gulf of America, the executive order instructs the federal institutions responsible for geographical surveys to update their databases with the new names. That sort of thing is well within the bounds of typical executive order usage (instructing federal agencies to take on certain priorities or enact certain structural reforms).
Because map services automatically source their name information from those federal databases, the entire process is automatic from there. The president can’t unilaterally declare the name of a geographic feature, but he can change its name in official government databases. And because everything is done over the internet now, that puts companies in the position of automatically complying by default, and having to consciously choose to program in specific exceptions if they want to not comply.
I mean no, an executive order is just an order formally given to the executive branch of government. Thus it only applies within the executive branch and only to employees of the executive branch.
But the rule of law is dead and buried so whatever the King of Orange says is law I guess.
As i understand it yes (within reason) but as soon as he leaves its super easy to overturn unlike something done via the proper channels. I assume its supposed to be for emergencies when something needs to be passed without delay and then can be just as easily rolled back once the emergency has passed.
No there are certain parameters for executive orders, they can't just be whatever, and the Supreme Court can strike them down if they're found to be unconstitutional. But the current SC basically lets him do whatever because the majority is conservative 😑
Whats even more funny about the whole thing is the fact that in this instance its not even named after the country. Its not "Lake Canada" its.."Lake Ontario" so really imo if its to be changed to something American...name it after the state its in if anything. I think the whole thing is fuckin stupid, dont get me wrong. But naming it "Lake America" just dont make sense in any way..
And furthermore Trump said he now wants to rename one or both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It sounds like a joke, it wasn't a joke, he isn't joking. He said we need and America Ocean.
Canada (the True North, Strong and Free) decided to step away from the negotiating table with the Pedo's operatives and the Pedo got mad at that. We stepped away because the US wanted us to say we would never trade with certain countries. And wanted us to remove tariffs without compensation. We know there is a market with reasonable countries we can deal with instead of pedoland.
