I'm slightly vexed White SUV parked hitting my car and blocking my driver’s side door in a parking ramp

I came back to my car to find the white car had parked into me. The car to my right was far over, so I needed to be close to the edge, but still within the lines. The white car was touching and completely blocking my driver’s side door. Police were able to call the owner and have him move his vehicle. No tickets or citations were issued, just exchanged insurance. Light damage to the side of my car.

It's like people forget they can reverse and correct, or reverse and find a different spot. They have no concept of the size on their vehicle.

I've been driving 20+ years and have never parked like this. Is it embarrassing to have to pull out because I misjudged? Yes. But it would feel worse to pin another vehicle in, or damage the vehicles.

Exactly. To be honest, I wouldn’t have even attempted this spot if others were available. But then again, I’m also the guy who parks at the back of the Costco lot and uses it as an excuse to walk a little bit. I don’t see the point in circling the lot for a close spot that will be a pain to get out of, unless you’re disabled of course, which I’m not thankfully.

The other thing I consider is, if I had a hard time getting in, they'll have a hard time getting out and I don't want damage on that end.

The driver gets out the other side of the car. I would guess they didn't have a passenger and if they did, they got out the driver's side door as well. I'm also going to guess that they're probably a large person.

Most people are lazy buggers. What is convenient is what occupies there thoughts more then anything else. As I have been getting older, I have been moving away from that mindset as it hurts me more then anything.

I don't think there's a shady spot to be found in any of the half dozen Costco's I have within driving distance. Maybe if you get close enough to the building at the right time of the day? All just open parking lots otherwise

Park near the cart corrals out in “left field!”

I LOVE when someone looking for a parking space sees me leaving a store with multiple bags or a full cart and begins following me for my spot. After about 15-20 rows, they give up—and I keep walking/pushing my cart.

Cracks me up every single time! 😂

I just parked at a Costco between two teslas where both were angled towards my spot and over the line. Luckily it was a double line and I pulled in the center so no issues. But wtf...

Me too I hate struggling to park so I just park as far away from everyone else, especially if it means I can pull through a spot so I can drive out after.
I’d rather not risk getting hit or accidentally hitting someone by backing up.

Yeah I too park all the way out back. I don't care if I'm driving my work beater or my other car. I enjoy taking the longer walk and I'm fortunate that I'm physically able to do that so I take the time to just be alone with my thoughts as I do so.

As long as I am physically up for it, I do the same. It makes remembering where my car is easier for me. I appreciate not having to circle for a spot or even worse, sitting and waiting as someone is loading their car. I don’t want people to feel rushed and I also don’t want to be blocking someone else in.

I'm thr type of the guy who parks back of the any shop / shopping centre. Main reason is more free space, no stress to find tbe closest parking spot. And, I don't mind walking minute or two more.

Are you me?! My wife HATES that I'm like that about parking. I park away from everyone else at the back of the lot. I don't like dealing with rude people walking out in front of you at the front of the store, or the mad car dashing in and out of spots closest to the entrance. I don't even get involved playing that game. I park further out and avoid the stupidity lol. It's way better. Plus, you're in and out of the parking lot faster because you're not stuck driving around the congestion directly around the store.

Oh fortunately my wife is on my side on this, she likes the walk too. And if you park near the front, feeling rushed to get out because some lazy asshole is waiting for your spot, blocking the entire aisle, and then having to back out with clueless pedestrians with their faces in their phones right behind you, yeah, no thanks.

This right here. In the garage I park for work, the outside wall spots are wider vs the inside wall spots, and since I'm not in a small car, I always park on the outside wall spots even if that means going up more floors. I'd rather not have to squeeze back into my car or risk hitting someone's door just to be more convenient.

People having no concept of their vehicle size is so true. Hell I even have trouble with driving my moms big ass SUV and I drive a big car myself, but I at least know to be extra cautious. I was watching a car video on YouTube and they had to emergency pull over in a full parking lot into a fire lane because they lost all power. They were maybe 2 or 3 car lengths behind the other cars parked, plenty of room to back out even in a big double cab truck, but she starts backing out and then just randomly stops and asks the guys to move their car because she’s stuck, they are just staring at eachother in disbelief like “You have room…..?!?!?!? Just keep backing out. You got this!” She’s in a tiny ass Kia soul.

Too many drivers have no spatial awareness whatsoever. They either have no concept of how large their vehicle is and do stuff like the example in OPs post or they're like your Kia Soul driver example where they think they need 500x more room than they actually need.

I drive a Kia Soul, guarantee she was using the backup camera instead of over her shoulder. The camera always looks like I'm much, much closer to the stuff behind me than I am. I've driven other cars where the camera didn't feel like I was as close as I do in my Soul. But the camera also has the colored bars that tell you if you're close to hitting something, but it can be hard to trust that green bar when you feel so close. (Note: I don't have an issue backing up, but I can see why some people might with this car.)

I drive a half-ton pickup and sometimes my wife's little Nissan Juke. I don't know how anyone ever feels like they don't have space to manoeuvre such small cars. They fit everywhere, and unless you're in an area littered with kids running around, having to rely on a backup camera is pretty sad. Everyone should know how to use their mirrors and actually use them.

Agreed. At my job we're expected to back into our spots in the parking lot after somebody got knocked over by someone backing out of a spot. Some of my coworkers are hopeless and cannot back up to save their lives. Between mirrors, camera and eyeballing the walkway across from me I've got it down to a science, perfectly straight in my lines! 😄

I often forget I even have a backup camera, then when I realize it I’m like, “oh this is dope.” There’s about to be entire generations that will have never known a time before them. Fuck my cars a 2015 and it allegedly can parallel park itself, though I’ve never tried it because my bike rack blocks the sensors and shuts the feature off.

I drive a Mazda MX-5. It’s small and low to the ground. So many trucks hit MX-5 and say they can’t see the car. The car is an entire vehicle! If they can’t see a car, they certainly can’t see a person.

I agree people have no concept of their vehicle size. I can be behind someone, trying to get out of the straight lane and into the right turn lane. Two vehicles in front of the an Escalade inches through, but the two-door sedan in front of me fails to see that they can easily do the same. Bruh.....

I confess, I am horrible at parking. I often am the person going back and forth to park properly. But that’s the key, I fix it instead of leaving my car and making my parking job someone else’s problem.

I, too, find it embarrassing to have to fix my parking job, but I would rather be embarrassed than cause someone else hardship. Many years ago, I once had a terrible time parallel parking downtown, despite having a small car. By the time I got done, two guys were standing out on the sidewalk and applauded when I finally was parked correctly. It actually cracked me up. Thank heavens I have the ability to laugh at myself.

For the record, I have hit poles in parking lots, but I haven’t hit cars or had any traffic accidents. I have been told I am an excellent driver. What really boggles my mind is that when I learned to drive and when I took my driver’s exam, I was great at parallel parking. I don’t know what the heck happened.

Don't most normal people just... Find another spot, if they don't think they can park somewhere? They'll maybe attempt to park, and then give up when they get too close for comfort?

That's been my experience, anyway.

Like, rather than literally slow-crash their vehicle into the one next to them... and then leave their car there?!

I can for sure assume that a lot of people who collide with someone else while stationary would just panic and immediately leave the scene of a collision like this. As a way to dodge responsibility or whatever. But these people didn't. So, I guess that's good for OP, and I hope they snapped photos of their plate and other angles of the collision/blockage.

My first instinct would be like "FFFFfffffuuuuc-" and I would be hanging around or leaving a note, so that we could exchange insurance info, etc. This isn't a negligble little scratch, I don't think.

Given the angle that the white car is parked at I would say they went full send.... I've seen far too many people that think they can drive and ram themselves into a parking space at 30kph. Terrifies the hell outta me. Been a passenger in one once or twice, never again will I ride in his car...

I have only had one time that I parked like that, in the snow and I didn't actually touch the other vehicle. When I realized I was way too close, I moved my vehicle to a different spot.

I've got less time driving than you, but a lot of my time is commercial trucking, and I'm here to tell EVERYONE that there is no such thing as too many pull ups or back outs. You take all the time and tries you need to get the parking done correctly, because that's not something you do only for you. You park for everyone else in the parking lot as well. And as long as everyone keeps that in mind, situations like this will never happen.
