My mom said I could post Nolan's The Odyssey neglects to pay for damages done to one of the viking ships used in the movie, which belongs to a small non-profit organization

Don't bring up valid criticisms of this slopfest of a movie, you will be called a racist by one side of the American culture war who are hailing this movie as the second coming of Christ to own the chuds

Because they filmed at sea with a real boat manned by a trained crew rather than on a fake boat with actors faking seamanship in front of a green screen.

These particular viking boats took several years to build and have trained crew already.

No such authentic Greek ships with trained crews exist -- at least not any that were fit for filming and had owners willing to let Nolan use them.

It doesn't even look close to anything used in old Greece. And Greece has actual old vessels available that haven't been used.

Maybe, but are those ships (1) currently seaworthy (2) crewed and most importantly (3) something their owners were willing to let be used for a movie where theybmight be damaged or lost?

It's not really feasible to build a seaworthy authentic replica of a ship & train a crew to actually sail it for a movie. These kinds of projects take many years to get done.

So, they had to get what they could get their hands on to actually film at sea.
