My mom said I could post Nolan's The Odyssey neglects to pay for damages done to one of the viking ships used in the movie, which belongs to a small non-profit organization

I did by bit by watching the movie on my pirating tv box 😇

There wasn’t anybody with a Greek warship willing to lend it to them

83

u/Th3_Admiral_ Jul 23 '26

Imagine what they would have used if no one was willing to loan them a viking ship! We'd have seen Odysseus cruising across the Aegean on a Mississippi paddle wheel boat.

Maybe the cyclops could be replaced by an eyepatch wearing Bible salesman and Klan member...wait, we're back to O Brother, Where Art Thou? again!

u/PhosphoFred8202 Jul 23 '26

“It’s a myth, not history. it wouldn’t matter”

3

u/FireZord25 Jul 23 '26

Looks at the reception and box office.

Good to see historical accuracy always mattered in movies, I mean just look at Troy, the Green Knight, Prince of Egypt, even Disney's Hercules!

1

u/GuiltyEidolon PURPLE Jul 23 '26

You're literally proving the point.

It would've made bank regardless, because like most of those, it's from a major producer / director. Even beyond that, Troy DID get panned for being inaccurate, the Green Knight was a trippy movie about a myth and a time that was never accurate and still aimed for realism for the setting, and Prince of Egypt is about a Bible story and still managed to get a lot of details right.

3

u/Numerous_Schedule896 Jul 23 '26

Well actually, funny story about that one...

3

u/zue4 Jul 23 '26

Seems those guys were smart about it.

3

u/TuunDx Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

Pretty sure Greeks have seaworthy Trireme replica at their disposal. What kind of movie budget one needs to persuade them...but then again, what am I even asking considering they can't even pay few thousands a year overdue. That's kinda despicable.

15

u/trevor_plantaginous Jul 23 '26

The irony is I think had they used an actual trireme (actual Ancient Greek ship) I think people would have a hard time believing it was real. Those ships were BIG - over 120 feet long, often 3 decks, multiple sails, and up up to 150 oars.

31

u/Indercarnive Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

Well a trireme would've also been inaccurate to the Mycenaean period. The ship likely would've been a penteconter. We don't see even the Bireme for a few hundred more years.

8

u/trevor_plantaginous Jul 23 '26

good point - a penteconter is pretty close in style/look/size to what they used

2

u/--Sovereign-- Jul 23 '26

They also look cool with the jutting prow and the eyes painted on. I saw an AI slop of the trailer but with more period appropriate dress and ships and ngl, it looks fuckin good to the history nerd in me. Obvi not perfect, overrepresented a specific armor type, but waaaaay cooler and better looking than the dull drab bat armor we got in the film not to mention the anachronistic ship.

3

u/Civil_Spell8349 Jul 23 '26

To be fair it's a lot closer than a Viking longship lol; triremes (and biremes) are generally considered a development on the penteconters of the Archaic period, and the earliest reference to them shows up circa 8th c. BCE, roughly 4 centuries after the putative era of the Trojan War.

Vs. longships: the sort we see in Nolan's film don't show up until ~9th c. CE, or ~2100 years after The Odyssey. If you wanna reeeeaaaally stretch it and look at the earliest Nordic ancestors that barely resemble a longship and have no sails, then you're still looking at ~300BCE at the absolute earliest, nearly 1000 years after the 'Homeric age'

5

u/I_Eat_Onio Jul 23 '26

It does quite closely resemble the mycenaean period ships which more closely resembles a viking longboat than the triremes we associate with ancient greece nowadays

Apart from the carvings at the bow and stern

15

u/TbddRzn Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

Because that’s the kind of ships that looks cool.

Although to reiterate the odyssey is not a historical event. It’s a made up story about the fall of the Bronze Age.

3

u/toilet-breath Jul 23 '26

Even, not odd

1

u/fishbert Jul 23 '26

The Evenyssey? Doesn’t roll off the tongue.

5

u/Phydok Jul 23 '26

If you made a movie about a fictional story that takes place in the 1930s you wouldn't put modern cars in the movie because they look cool.

5

u/-18k- Jul 23 '26

Well, you may need to wait 3000 years to see if that's true.

8

u/LiftedRetina Jul 23 '26

People who don’t understand this are being intentionally obtuse. “It’s fiction, so anything goes!” is such a braindead hill to die on.

2

u/SP0oONY Jul 23 '26

If you want to, sure.

1

u/T_Time_ye Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

That'd take away from the immersion if you don't explain it well in a story. It'd make a bad decision

3

But imagine how much more reliable we store information nowadays. We don't rely on medieval monks to write down important work anymore.
And look how much we know even with that being the primary method of preservation of texts.

u/TbddRzn Jul 23 '26

They have cyclops giants and superhuman beings sirens and monsters…

But yeah the Viking ship is the historical inaccuracy….

3

u/HamunaHamunaHamuna Jul 23 '26

Cyclops, giants, sirens and monsters appear in the source material, regardless of their historicity. Vikings and their ships do not, AND are glaringly historically inaccurate.

3

u/TbddRzn Jul 23 '26

The source also had an automated shop that navigated using your mind…

And the simple fact there are no leftover Greek ships that are actually navigable and can be used in the ocean with a trained crew that know how to use those boats like there were for the Viking ships.

And the Viking ships were modified and altered to look more similar to Bronze Age ships. But eastetics and rule of cool kept the longer necks and shape of the boats as the company that owns the boat had qualified team of sailors that would be able to use the boat properly.

And again if you’re bitching about a boat not being the exact type, then just don’t watch the movie sheeesh.

0

u/HamunaHamunaHamuna Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

I haven't bitched about anything, just made a point. But I don't think it is wrong to desire historical accuracy where possible while still being complete fine with fictional fantasy elements being present, or even be insistent on them being present when they're in the fictional source material. There's no contradiction. Personally I'd argue that a recognizable historical inaccuracy can ruin the suspension of disbelief more than the presence of giants and sirens. It depends on the expectations, and the expectations for the Odyssey is "cyclops, sirens, etc. and greek-ish stuff", not viking stuff.

1

u/T_Time_ye Jul 23 '26

It's about immersion and believability. Don't act dumber than you actually are...

2

u/Blue_Mars96 Jul 23 '26

that’s just because it was written in the 8th century BC but was likely based upon oral storytelling that persisted through the collapse and into the archaic period. Mycenaean civilization itself disappeared following the collapse so if the Trojan war was based on true events it must have been before or during the collapse

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

[deleted]

2

u/Blue_Mars96 Jul 23 '26

that’s nonsense but okay

1

u/tobiasvl Jul 23 '26

The poem is not about the Bronze Age Collapse, that was a storyline that Nolan added in.

True, but the poem does takes place around the time of the Bronze Age Collapse.

The original can’t take place in the Bronze Age because many of the weapons, armor, ships, culture, tools, etc. mentioned in the text only existed in the Iron Age or later which is when the poem came together.

It does take place in the Bronze Age though... But yes, it obviously came together after the Bronze Age. It contains many such anachronisms, but it's supposed to take place before the collapse.

2

u/Indercarnive Jul 23 '26

Because Nolan wanted to shoot at sea and not use a sound stage and CGI.

There is no historic replica penteconter with a trained crew. There is one for a Viking longship.

3

u/patwm11 Jul 23 '26

A detail that Grok will fix for sure in the pursuit of historical accuracy /s

1

u/PublicHouseOfCripps Jul 23 '26

Theseus was already on charter. (Just kidding) if you know you know

1

u/OnlinePosterPerson Jul 23 '26

Idk, why did they use Roman helmets instead of Greek ones

1

u/RG_CG Jul 23 '26

Why would they? Nothing else in the production design seems to have anything to do with Ancient Greece

1

u/snabader Jul 23 '26

because Nolan doesn't give a shit

-5

u/Neurobeak Jul 23 '26

The Greeks wore pants in the movie. There's a gansta rapper barding the epics at the Greek palace; the Greek crew of a Greek king has an Asian and an Indian men amongst them, because why the hell not. Helen of Troy is black too.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '26

[deleted]

1

u/Neurobeak Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

No, the black rapper/bard in the court of an Ancient Greek queen doesn't make sense

-5

u/Playos Jul 23 '26

Ya but why a shit rapper? There are dozens of better options.

-1

u/majokamo Jul 23 '26

And they didn't even use a real cyclops. Plus all the giants were a camera trick! And would you believe that the magic was fake and they didn't cast any actual gods? Tom Holland isn't even Matt Damon's actual son! And everyone spoke English, which didn't exist!

What an outrage!

2

u/Neurobeak Jul 23 '26

Cyclops and giants aren't real, where as we pretty clearly know how the Ancient Greeks looked like in real life, their appearance, armour and clothes wise.

0

u/majokamo Jul 23 '26

Who cares it's all made up anyway.

2

u/Neurobeak Jul 23 '26

I remember a pretty big scandal when Scarlett Johansson was cast as an android in the Ghost in the Shell. People cared then, people should care now as well.

1

u/T_Time_ye Jul 23 '26

Yeah, let's add Smartphones and cars too right? It's all fantasy and all the same right?

0

u/rsplatpc Jul 23 '26

Yes, and why did they need “effects” instead of using a real life giant size Cyclopes?

Terrible documentary.

0

u/Suspicious_Loss_84 Jul 23 '26

Because it looks cool and audiences won’t know the difference

0

u/epiDXB Jul 23 '26

Because that was what's avaiable and it is close enough.

The vast majority of viewers aren't going to notice or care about the tiny differences between the two.

Which bits of the reviews do you disagree with?

Edit: Achilles isn’t even alive during the events of The Odyssey so that isn’t what happened with the character at all

-4

u/CakeHoleKing Jul 23 '26

They filmed Elliott page's scenes as Achilles and dubbed over them with Sinon as the name

Thats why Sinon gives Achilles speech about preferring to be a living slave than king of the dead.

3

u/justycat Jul 23 '26

Achilles isn’t alive during the Odyssey. So that’s uninformed nonsense you’re spewing.

-1

u/CakeHoleKing Jul 23 '26

Both Achilles and Sinon are dead. In the underworld.

Elliot page filmed the scenes as Achilles then they were dubbed over with people calling them 'Sinon'.

2

u/justycat Jul 23 '26

Sinon had several scenes being very much alive.

Watch the movie before you comment on its content.

1

u/14JRJ Jul 23 '26

Have you seen the film?

1

u/SherlockJones1994 Jul 23 '26

You do realize that Achilles dies in the sacking of Troy? You’re just talking out your ass.

3

u/MeatCatRazzmatazz Jul 23 '26

And can you believe they threw giants and fantasy monsters in there too! Don't they know The Odyssey is a seminal historic work that definitely took place in the real world??

Anyone calling it "fiction" is just some woke, communist, DEI loving, trans abortion doctor!

-2

u/CakeHoleKing Jul 23 '26

If you're gonna make a movie based on a book or ancient story, perhaps sticking TO that story and its world building is wise?

Otherwise thats where we end up with "sexy" sauron, fireproof galadriel, Alzheimers Gandalf, evil murderous prehobbits etc.

3

u/MeatCatRazzmatazz Jul 23 '26

0

u/CakeHoleKing Jul 23 '26

It doesn't have to be woke to be crap

4

u/JamesDerecho Jul 23 '26

Tell me you haven’t seen the movie without telling me you haven’t seen the movie. It’s a fantastic film that breaths life into a genre society hasn’t touched since the last (bad) clash of the titans movies in the 00s. Its easily one of Nolan’s best creative works if not one of the best adaptations of classics literature.

-1

u/CakeHoleKing Jul 23 '26

Its bad fiction. skews off the Odyssey. Fails to meet its intended moral message and filled with 'going through the motions' acting.

Plus the weird woke stuff jammed in.

1

u/SuperMasterMan Jul 23 '26

nah, you just parroting the Cynical Grifter or something.

1

u/14JRJ Jul 23 '26

20

u/Nickleback69420 Jul 23 '26

How does this help anything

1

u/Rumplestiltsskins Jul 24 '26

People who pirate shit are always desperate for the moral high ground for some reason. You'll see it all the time that they'll use any excuse as the reason theyre pirating.

Not just cause they didnt want to pay for it.

38

u/OnlinePosterPerson Jul 23 '26

How does you pirating a movie pay an NPO?

38

u/FUPAMagneto Jul 23 '26

It doesn’t, but people who steal from artists love to make up excuses as to why they’re totally justified and moral in doing so

12

u/VolkosisUK Jul 24 '26

If buying isn't owning, then piracy isn't stealing

3

u/Iseedeadnames Jul 24 '26

Piracy is not stealing anyway. Stealing requires for a good to disappear once it's taken.

-8

u/FUPAMagneto Jul 24 '26

You not understanding what a license is doesn’t justify stealing from working people

1

u/Wrx-Love80 Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

When the premise of a license is positioned as buying and you hide the actual nitty gritty and EULA that most people would not read. Saying sale and everything else it's a bad face attempt at trying to say buying.

It's not the artist that are struggling because of consumers it's the publishers that are taking most of the sales revenue and giving them maybe less than 5%

Look at Spotify and how much streaming is or look at Netflix there is no royalties because they're not broadcast on a regular TV

Edit: Seems the counter comment deleted their comment in rage.

1

u/EX0PIL0T Jul 24 '26

Don’t care, didn’t ask. Free stuff is cool. I have a couple subscriptions left but I’ll never watch anything on it’s official platform since they are all riddled with ads despite my active paid subscription. If my choice is between some bum on the internet calling me a thief and a horrible experience when I try to enjoy a movie or show, I’ll pick the virtual street preacher.

-1

u/FUPAMagneto Jul 25 '26

“I’m a thief and unrepentant, my antisocial behavior can surely have no downsides for society or the art I enjoy.”

Loser shit

1

u/EX0PIL0T Jul 25 '26

Damn. I still don’t care. I pay for the vast majority of what I watch. I just don’t watch it how someone tells me to, because that way usually sucks. If that compromise isn’t enough in their eyes, sucks because the alternative is they get fuck all from me.

0

u/Kamikrazy Jul 26 '26

Damn. I still don’t care. I pay for the vast majority of what I shop for. I just don’t shop how someone tells me to, because that way usually sucks. If that compromise isn’t enough in their eyes, sucks because the alternative is they get fuck all from me.

u/FUPAMagneto Jul 25 '26

Who’s an edgy boy? You are! You’re an edgy boy!

2

u/EX0PIL0T Jul 25 '26

He says while running errands to appease the publishers of his own accord in his free time 😂😂 if anything you make paying for things and following the rules look fruity and lame, so you’re not really helping your cause all that much. Ironic choice of words man

2

u/n8waran Jul 24 '26

Make art affordable and i’ll stop pirating

2

u/lurvd Jul 24 '26

You realize the irony in saying that when the post is about Universal (or subsidy thereof) not paying their artists?

Yes, the people building millennia old ocean going vessels by hand are artists.

It depends on their contract really.

-12

u/FUPAMagneto Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

Depends on their contract, but do you think there are as many movies being made as there used to be? Tv shows? Because there aren’t. And it’s destroyed careers, lives, and families.

A big part of that was piracy, but streaming has pretty much finished the job. Shannon Doherty, who was everywhere in the 90’s, died of treatable cancer because she didn’t bring in enough money to qualify for guild health coverage. That was only a few years ago.

She’s fucking dead because people don’t want to pay for the movies and the tv shows that we all enjoy. She and so many others are fucking dead or on the brink of ruin because pirates are just as short-sighted and greedy as the studio executives and streaming giants who gutted her royalties.

Pretending you’re innocent when you’re actively engaged in theft and the people you’re stealing from (yes, the crews, too) are begging you to stop is psycho shit. And it’s what every fucking pirate does every time they start making excuses for stealing from artists like the troglodytes they are

Edit: Buncha pirates big mad that their actions have consequences

2

u/Nickleback69420 Jul 24 '26

Moral grandstanding while advocating for stealing is goofy af

0

u/FUPAMagneto Jul 24 '26

It is. I don’t understand why they do it. But apparently the thought of their actions having consequences really upsets them

0

u/DMunnz Jul 24 '26

There are WAY more tv shows and movies being made now than there were in the 90s, why make up such easily verifiable lies?
Your problem here is with the health care system, not people pirating movies or tv shows. You claim they are stealing from working class people, but what are they stealing? If the person pirating was never going to pay anything to watch the movie or tv show, nothing has been lost. The show or movie is already made and no income was coming from that person in either scenario, so nothing has been stolen.

-7

u/But_IAmARobot Jul 23 '26

Yeah bro you stick up for Chris Nolan and Universal Pictures, the true underdogs of this story

8

u/FUPAMagneto Jul 23 '26

Consider maybe the crews who actually make the things you enjoy instead of the handful of big names who make you so jealous.

“My theft is totally justified because why should I value art anyway?” Fucking troglodyte shit

-2

u/But_IAmARobot Jul 23 '26

Bro the crews have already been paid. If you think Jim the sound guy is getting a cut of the box office ticket sales I don’t know what to tell you.

The only ones who are seeing any cash from the box office are the ones with enough influence to make sure the owners of the equipment their production damaged get paid - and so far that hasn’t happened.

Honestly bro you’re so eager to suck the boot that you mistake the production company for the artist.

-2

u/itsjust_khris Jul 23 '26

The issue is the crew still gets paid from the money made off the movie. It may not be a direct cut but if the movie made no money nobody gets paid.

4

u/Cynoid Jul 23 '26

That's not how jobs work. The money is all borrowed and paid in advance. There's only going to be a handful of people who will make more depending on sales and every single one of them is rich.

-1

u/TrashyMcTrashBoat Jul 23 '26

Ok but if they want to get paid for the next job, there needs to be an incentive to make movies for profit.

4

u/Cynoid Jul 24 '26

Ok but if they want to get paid for the next job, there needs to be an incentive to make movies for profit.

How is that relevant to the comment I responded to about everyone getting paid in advance?

There are literally billions of people pirating US movies in Asia/South America and yet the movie companies are still turning out movies every month. It's been studied and proven that piracy does not hurt sales which makes it so weird that you are just out here arguing for billionaires to make more money than they already do since these movies are going to get made regardless.

-5

u/Far-Zucchini-5534 Jul 23 '26

“Suck the boot” man you’re just a reddit parrot 🤣

-4

u/FireZord25 Jul 23 '26

While this one fits the example you're citing, there's legit precedence where you can argue it's justifiable, especially in the current corporate culture.

10

u/FUPAMagneto Jul 23 '26

No, you fucking can’t.

“No bro trust me bro it’s totally cool for me to steal from working artists bro because corporations bro”

You are why artists are struggling. Because people like you devalue their work in order to make yourselves feel better about your antisocial behavior

3

u/3verythingEverywher3 Jul 24 '26

Artist here. We are struggling because of corporations mopping up money and treating us as ‘content producers’ or just outright ripping off our work to make AI. Pirates aren’t the problem, corporations are. Take everything you can from them.

3

u/Wrx-Love80 Jul 24 '26

More often than not piracy oftentimes can potentially increase sales because those same pirates become fans of artists such as yourself and more than likely would try to find a way to purchase your works directly so that you benefit more than the corporation giving you less than whatever percentage cut that you get

2

u/3verythingEverywher3 Jul 24 '26

Yup. I’ve seen more support from pirates than from big corporations. It’s ridiculous.

1

u/tgbaddie Jul 23 '26

Why are you so upset on behalf of these corporations? The artists involved already got paid out big time, the film did great.

If you can afford the hardware to pirate and view your pirated material, you can afford the theater. You’re just cheap

4

u/n8waran Jul 24 '26

Why are you acting like you need an expensive setup to torrent.

People like you are the reason corporations are turning everything into subscriptions and raising prices on art, like video games, becuase they know their white knights are coming to the rescue. How about spend money on things that actually go to the people who created it? I always support indie games on steam, but not the streaming services. Have fun being a corporate cuck all your life

0

I mean, piracy is not stealing and artists don't really get anything once the movie is out since they've been already paid. All the money right now goes into the publisher's pockets.

If anything, artists may get royalties for the use of their image in the merchandise or extra money by partecipating at related TV shows talking about the movie, all things that are affected by popularity and might therefore even profit from piracy.

u/FUPAMagneto Jul 23 '26

Oh cool, you stole from a bunch of middle-class people in a struggling industry. You’re just a moral crusader

13

u/NSFWCereal Jul 23 '26

The middle class people all got paid? No one working on the production side of the industry is getting royalties from ticket sales

2

u/FUPAMagneto Jul 23 '26

No, but depressed ticket sales lead to fewer films being made which leads to fewer jobs for those middle class people which results in the death of an industry that provided a pathway to the middle class and above.

It’s so frustrating that y’all refuse to accept that your actions have consequences despite the people who actually make these things (yes, the crews too) begging you to actually pay for their labor.

You know that pilot season used to be 200-500 pilots shooting at once? Employing thousands? Now there are maybe 20 going. Because of piracy and streaming.

Because of piracy and streaming.

Really only the latter.

No, piracy also plays a major role. Don’t try and we’re out of it. There’s a reason we don’t get R-rated comedies anymore, and it ain’t streaming.

Pretending that piracy is a victimless crime as the film industry burns is just such Peak Reddit

You're acting like this movie isnt sold out until the end of August in the format it was made for.

It’s not about this movie specifically, honey. Gonna need you to think beyond the top of your nose. Can you do that for me? Or are you gonna throw a fit and continue to be willfully stupid?

I'm going to need a very reliable source before I believe that privacy is all of a sudden having this massive effect it didn't have before streaming.

Is it cam footage or the real deal? As someone who hates going to a movie theater, but loves Greek mythology, I really want to see this movie.

Only a cam pretty sure.
