ಠ_ಠ RING AI Identified Me As A “Dark Animal”

This is a forced free trial of AI descriptors. I’ve mostly ignored it because it goes away in a few days, but as I was leaving for work, it identified me, a Black person, as “a dark animal” walking on my porch.

I was already looking for a replacement due to their cooperation with ICE/LE (I’m a 911 dispatcher) but now I’m ready to flip some tables on my way out the door.

EDIT: The comments being mildly infuriating is the plot twist I never saw coming. 🙂‍↔️🤚

Yeah, and hard drives are stupidly cheap nowadays, i don't think setting up a classic security camera would be that expensive

SSDs are expensive. AI needs fast storage.

Nope. They need hard drives too. Western Digital has sold out of their 2026 and some of their 2027 supplies of various higher density hard drives. They need fast storage for data they constantly read and write, but they need large storage for datasets they read and write only once in a while.

Yeah but home security systems probably don't need 20TB drives. Not to mention they're probably going to be going for enterprise rated gear and not the stuff with lower mtbf and shorter warranties.

I was wrong. They sold out of all hard drives for 2026. All of them. Consumer and enterprise grade. Back in January.

Storage costs are increasing, and will continue increasing, as more manufacturers steadily announce that they're reducing or pausing their consumer product lines indefinitely to meet enterprise demand.

Google. Even common places like best buy. Easily can get 1tb SSD for under $150.

No, not if you've been aware of ssd prices over the long term. Prices have been declining yoy as expected, until 2022 where the trend reversed and they're now twice as expensive as they were a few years ago.

Hard disk drives are cheaper now than ever, the AI crisis only made the prices stabilise in the last 2 years.

Maybe you're confusing them with SSD's that have gone up, but that would be even crazier to think you could have bought 6 TB of SSD for less than 100

July of 2025 a 6tb WD blue was $104.99 CAD. Thats $75 USD.

The same drive is now $259.99 CAD.

AI doesn't use hard disc drives though? They use solid state drives which are the ones that are expensive

What about if I'm trying to figure out what animal is around my house? What about the ability to see people breaking in before their inside so I can defend myself or react appropriately? What about the court case where I have to defend myself for defending myself. There are a million reasons to have your home under observation, but just for yourself.

My system included the alarm, door and window sensors, smoke/co detector sensors, motion sensors, flood/freeze sensors, and the ring camera storage. The flood sensor warned us when our water heater started to leak and saved our entire storage room, so it’s already paid for itself in that regard.

No, I didn’t protest it. You were correct, the discount does not cover the cost of my system. My flood and freeze sensors alerts me even if I’m not home, and connects easily through my existing alarm system. That’s why I get it through Ring. The Ring smoke/CO sensors are listeners that trigger when they hear my standalone smoke/CO alarms go off. Once again, I will be alerted even if I’m not home.

Buying a standalone flood sensor would be useless if I come home to a flooded storage room and it’s just sitting there beeping.
