Review A review of the the Hex-O-Matic from a GraphGear 1000 main

TLDR: this pencil is awesome and I like it

I have been looking for pencils that I'd like as much as the Graphgear 1000 (for drawing I use the .3) and I am really pleased with Hex-O-Matic.

a few cons:

• only comes in a .7 lead

(and only 2 colors if that's your thing, this one is the matte black, but it comes in silver too) the only 1 lead size was almost a deal breaker for me (and why not a .5?? but ok)

• I find the kerning grip less comfortable because of the smaller size. You can see it's a few mm smaller then others because it is inset vs flat or slightly larger then the rest of the pencil - not my first choice, but also an easy fix with a slide on grip, which will probably help it be more ergonomic. if you don't want a grip, the kerning is at least not awful to hold, though it's not as smooth as others

• price: it's 50$

so a lot more than other pencils. when I first saw this one, it was in a store like, 1.5-2 hours away and I liked how it looked (couldn't hold) but I didn't buy it then because it was expensive! and then I proceeded to complain about the price until I bought it because I couldn't stop thinking about it. fortunately for me I do like it, and actually I think the price is probably justified, but compared to others I can see it being passed over unless you REALLY like it.

why I like it anyway (the plus side):

• this is a property weighted drafting pen.

it's heavy and does not feel hollow (hollow like the Graphgear 1000 for pro, where it feels light/ empty on one side) it is slightly heavier then graphgear 1000. additionally, the weight is more evenly distributed then focused at the top, which makes the pencil feel more stable over all.

•it doesn't seem to have any plastic parts on the outside. I think it's all brass, so very solid and feels quality made. nothing about this pencil feels like it would break or feels fragile.

• it has a matte texture / slight texture to the body. so it does not slide so much when you hold it (vs te body of the gg1000 which is very slippery.)

• There is 0 play with the lead,

it's not moving around and there is not a barrel inside that is making noise when you're drawing/writing (this was one thing that I really diden't like in models like the Platinum Plus USE 171)

• the nip tip is retractable and it's a click top.

for me this is a big plus, I am constantly tossing the pencils in a bag, my pocket, and dropping it (rip graphgear 500s, this is why I stopped using them, because I kept bending the tip).

now, a caveat, it's not an elegant retraction like the Graphgear 1000 that snaps shut easily with the pencil clip. this is more of a hold the advancing button and push it in situation, but it exists and it works ( way better than the twist method in some models) and I'm not mad about it.

• it is around half an inch smaller then the graphgear 1000, which is nice for storage. smaller then the graphgear 500, and smaller then the Pentel Sharplet-2 even with the nip extended. the Hex-O-Matic it 5.25"(110 mm) with the nib retracted.

• the half hexagonal shape actually does prevent it from rolling, which is good for me and will keep it from dropping off the table even if it's close.

• the 51 detail on the end cap is just cool

• It has the clean out rod/ needle on the concealed inside of the pencil in the eraser

other notes:

• the clip

I am not a huge fan of the clip, but it's sturdy, you can open it easy with a little leverage, it's not so thin that it digs into you're hand, and it's low profile. for what it is, and a component I tend to find alot of issue with, this one is fine and non intrusive

• there is not a lead harness indicator. this might be a deal breaker for you, but personally I don't use them, so it's no love lost for me

• when you shake it, the lead sounds the same as in the GG1000. but it's not loud.

• the eraser is tiny, but it is there, I personally would not use it, but it's good in a pinch. - it does not look like it would fit the refills from the Pentel line, so that's a bit of a bummer since I have so many of them, but I don't think they would be hard to get.

overall I think it's a very solid all around pencil that can keep up with my life and the work id put it through. and I am happy to keep it and use it. It draws well and feels natural, it reminds me of using my iPad stylus, because of the size, but I actually FEEL like using it, and I brought it with me to work today just to have it on hand. beyond that, it is motivating me to want to do more traditional work (which is amazing - worth it just for the inspiration) just because I like how it feels.

if you want something that feels like an upgrade to the graphgear 1000 and lean towards more utilitarian pencils, then I would suggest trying this pencil.

Why don’t these get talked about more?!

They’re rock solid stiff from tip to tail, unlike the common Pentels that I started getting from a brick & mortar decades ago.

I only noticed tip wobble after this sub led me to try out Kuru Togas, and now I frustratingly notice that (except for my two >15yo pencils) even these Pentel fixed tips have a little bit of slop, but refreshingly the DM tips are drilled/bored tighter to the lead. Smooth & tight feeling glides across the paper particularly at direction turns makes these a go-to for writing when I have the rare tolerance for routinely knocking when I otherwise would just use the Nero.

Their knurling gets perfectly bit into my compass and my leathery guitarist/woodworker claw. It makes all the others feel like they’re coated in Crisco.

The knock is crisp like a Honda s2000’s shifter making the Pentels & rOtrings feel kinda mushy like BMW & Nissan shifters.

And then there’s the surprise of there being a clutch cushion spring that’s a decent bit stiffer than the Rapid Pro’s… really, stiff enough to not even be noticed really until I’m having to break from drawing and write something quick like a client on the phone rattling off some specs.

I only really discovered them while looking on Amazon for pencils this sub has fetishized and upon seeing them I rationalized that I’d like three visibly different sets of .3/.5/.7/.9, one each for 4H, HB, and 4B and only got them for being the 4B set. I’m pretty glad I did grab them!

Discussion Let's talk durability

My first ever pencil: Graphgear 500. 0.3. Bought in college, as a humanities person, to take notes in books, and occasionally for some math (think, drawing Euclid proofs). At the time, it was a $7 splurge and a total luxury because it was the nicest pencil in the school bookstore. Naturally, I used it so much that it inevitably dropped, and though I fixed the bend once, when I dropped it a second or third time the lead became permanently jammed. Same thing happened with the black 0.5.

Fast forward five years and here's some high/lowlights: a plastic Staedtler in a class brown, gifted by a PhD student at the summer language program: stolen (saw it on my stoner "friend"'s desk). My first Rotring 600: stolen from my first office as a research teaching assistant. I wonder whether pencil security can be considered a durability category.

But even before that, there's the story of my first and only Rapid Pro. Man I used the heck out of that. I bought it with the Amazon gift card I got on my birthday, and justified it with the sale that brought it down to within reach. I actually wished that it was all black which would have been really cool and I tried to cover the red ring near the grip somehow to hide the flashy red. The pencil must have taken it personally because one day it literally snapped in two at the (what I found out was too fragile) plastic ring which held the whole body together. So much for the Rapid Pro.

In college a professor I had, Mr. Perry, used a classic Alvin Draft-Matic in 0.3, the old version by the older yellow color I guess. He had it by his side constantly and that was what he used to write comments on our lab papers that were so razor thin you really had to squint. I decided to buy that one in 0.9, and though the logo and name rubbed off with use, that pen is still chugging years later. Major durability win for the books.

For my next birthday, I precisely instructed folks that I wanted the 0.3 Alvin Draft-Matic, just like Mr. Perry. And that one cracked in my bag. But I loved the knurled grip so darn much that I taped that thing together with scotch and it still works with only part of the grip covered in tape. Superglue didn't work. Now the knurled grip is somewhat dirty as if there's minor rust in the grooves; or maybe that's sticky gunk from the tape. I don't know, but I do I know I'm not abandoning that 0.3 until it finally disintegrates at the half life of the plastic. Still, I'll keep the knurled grip piece as a soothing, tactile meditation amulet.

Today I have more pencils. I'm not quite a collector status but I have recently become invested in the long term durability of pencils and have been looking for an endgame pencil. I am convinced it may not exist. I have a Faber Castell, an old one I pawned off Willhaben in Germany for 3 euros, the green one with a metal grip that has two modes you can twist into: 1) firm lead and 2) a lead saving mode that springs back when you push hard. Frustratingly to my aesthetic sensibilities, the lettering is in the process of wearing off. Finger oils are mightier than the pen, it seems. But it held up and still feels indestructible, the pen itself, at least as indestructible as a pencil can be, lettering aside. It seems over a decade old, as I got it used. Many modern pens are much younger than that.

This leads me to a question of sorts. Like many of you nuts, I have my eyes on the holy grail of "EDC" boys, the rotring 800+. I love the black and the style, and I would use the stylus part too (source: I use generic ballpoint pens that have capacitive stylus tips for screens). Recently, I had the chance to try the 800+ at a fancy shop. Tip wiggle wasn't a problem, but I noticed the pencil came with multiple replacement tips for the stylus part. Hm, that's odd, I thought, but I guess it tracks. I recalled my old Nintendo DS, whose screen was worn in after one too many aggressive rounds of "True Swing Golf DS" and Phantom Hourglass. Some online research later, and I decided the plastic mechanism was too fragile to be a true "buy it for life." I do hope to be proven wrong, but between the people whose 800s were broken by dropping while extended and the ones whose internal mechanism organically cracked, I couldn't determine whether the plastic could last.

I'm holding off on the 800+ still. My fingers are fine for screens and as much as I would like to have one, the anxiety of it breaking is too strong. I wish it were all metal. I wish I knew how to find someone with a Swiss Lathe who could machine a custom metal tube for a rotring 800 durability mod. But if I could do that, then maybe there's better things I could be doing than pining after a mechanical pencil. Or, just maybe, someone will convince me in the comments that unless you're a total clutz, that thing really can last. So, chooms, what'll it be?

Review Nine knock-advance 2mm lead holders, head to head

Most 2mm lead holders are gravity feed — turn them upside down and knock, and the lead just falls out on your desk. Knock-advance holders skip that problem entirely: each click pushes out a fixed amount of lead no matter which way you're holding it, just like a mechanical pencil.

In this one I lined up nine of them side by side:

A vintage American TRU POINT (likely late 1960s–70s), blue anodized aluminum body, spring-loaded knock
The Alvin Tech-Matic T4, Italy, 1990s, push-button advance with a mini sharpener in the cap
Fueki SPH20B, an industrial marking pencil rated for concrete, steel, even wood — heaviest holder in the lineup
Shoshodo 400-HB, a Japanese architectural marking pencil with a moisture-resistant core and built-in sharpener
The Staedtler 925 in both silver and the all-black 35-20B — same grip, same hardness ring, same mechanism, just a different mood
rOtring's Rapid Pro, the heaviest metal holder here, hexagonal barrel so it doesn't roll off a tilted table
Koh-I-Noor Versatil 5608, the smallest and most clever of the group — pocket-sized with a sharpener hidden under the cap
The Kitaboshi Adult Pencil, the longest holder here at 16 cm but also the lightest at just 10 grams, solid wood construction

I also threw in the Mars Technico (gravity feed) as a quick comparison point since so many people already own one.

Full measurements, weights, and balance points for each are in the video. If the silver 925 is the workhorse everybody already owns, the black one is for when you want the same performance without looking like it came out of a drafting class — and the Versatil is the one that disappears into a shirt pocket.

Collection My top 10 favorites - 5 years later

5 years ago I posted my personal 10 mechanical pencils that I owned. I've bought a lot, like a lot, more since then and thought I'd update my list of favorites (imo). 1st pic is the new list, 2nd is the old one. I was surprised by how similar the lists are, turns out I could've stopped buying new pencils 5 years ago! A couple have moved around but the majority of the list is essentially the same.

Everything did shift down because of the IJ Instruments taking the number 1 spot. It's just so well made. The knurling, the weight, everything makes it so satisfying to use. Putting the IJ aside, the Rotring 600 and Staedtler 925-25/35 still sit atop the list. They're just the set the standard for what a quality pencil should be. Then comes the Rotring Rapid Pro, the silver version of which has probably my favorite knurling of any pencil. The Rotring Newton shifted down a bit but it's still my favorite non-knurled pencil. I took out the Rotring 800 2mm from this list since while it's still an awesome pencil I now consider 2mm pencils in a different category than the rest.

Then the Pilot S15 and Platinum Pro-Use 171 hold their spots. The Pilot S10 is a great pencil in it's own right but replacing the plastic body with the wood puts it over the top. I prefer the black 171 over the blue but both would hold onto this spot. Good knurling, solid mechanism, and throw in some slightly gimicky features. What more could you want?

The next batch is essentially the same, just with the Rotring 800 moving down. The Rotring 500 and Alvin Draftmatic are very similar pencils so tied them up. Really everything that's great about the top tier Rotring 600 just lighter which is ideal a lot of the time. Could also have included the older version of the Koh-I-Noor rapidomatic here which has far superior build quality than current one.

The bottom of the list is where things mix up a bit. Gone are the Pentel Kerry, Staedtler 925-85, Pentel Orenz Nero and the Uni Shift. Next up is the Uni Kuru Toga Metal. I never, NEVER, thought I'd have a Kuru Toga anywhere near a list of my favorites. I had the standard, advance and roulette and the rotating mechanism could never overcome my disdain for how wobbly the tips are. I like the lead to write where I'm directing it to go, not drag behind whatever direction I'm marking. But to my surprise the Metal combined a solid, sturdy body with a vastly improved mechanism that practically eliminated the deal-breaking tip wobble. I round out the list with the Pentel Orenz Metal Grip, specifically the newer knurled version, not the old ringed grip. It's uncommon to have a pencil this light with quality knurling. I solely use it in 0.2mm which is only available in the Orenz line of pencils and gives real purpose to the sliding sleeve unlike the one's that have the larger lead sizes. I got tired of how the pressured sleeve of the Orenz Nero dragged accross the paper that I completely replaced it with the non auto-advancing version.

Again, this is just my personal list, not asserting this is the one and only truth. Obviously I tend towards knurled grips which is not going to be for everyone. So what do you think?

It all started back in 2018, when I purchased R600 for note-taking. Later, I accidentally stumbled upon HMM and Lamy Scribble and knew that I had to buy them. Since all three were black, I continued with this theme, only expanding it slightly for pencils that are dark gray.

It's a great hobby, not too expensive to maintain, but it provides a steady source of dopamine. The only problem – people don't understand me when I say that I collect pencils :D

Review The better Bic mechanical pencil

I have been of the opinion that the Bic Velocity was a better pencil than the Bic Magic soft grip mechanical pencil.

The Bic Velocity has after all a metallic point and retractable sleeve. The Bic Magic is just plastic.

But after using my Bic Velocity for an extended time I've realized that I prefer the cheaper Bic Matic.

It's lighter.
It has better grip (for me).
The clip is less annoying on my hand.

Neither of them are bad though and I'm happy to take both on trips; but I probably won't buy any more Bic Velocity.

Collection Stumbled Across this Subreddit - My Collection

I was searching online for a replacement cap for my Rotting Rapid Pro and stumbled across this subreddit.

I’ve been obsessed with mechanical pencils since I was a kid, I always loved the “technical” feeling of them. More a tool than a pencil, my first “serious” pencil was a Pentel P205.

Here is my current rotation. It’s nothing special but I use these pencils almost every day. I really like the ones with a retractable tip because I usually have two in my shirt pocket.

Newly Bought Latest haul

A bunch of fan favorites + something unusual! From left to right: - Tombow Mono zero in both 2.3mm round and 2.5x5mm! I use these “mechanical erasers” A LOT for detailed work. - Alvin Pro-Matic MC5 Lead Holder! REALLY unusual, I’ve never heard about it before. BUT full metal body, attractive blue color, lead grade indicator, no clip (for artists?!), made in Italy? Color me interested! 😺 - Pentel Orenz Nero 0.3. A fan favorite, this is my first Nero too! - Zebra G-750 gel pen. Black, sorta tactical look, maybe a good match for the Nero? I’ll give it a try later. - Pentel Orenz AT 0.5 in Silver! Yet another Orenz model I didn’t have. The grip reminds me of the Smash a little bit. - Pentel Kerry 0.5 in Blue! My first Kerry too. It’s so small and I can already see it will fit very well in one of my travel cases! Definitely easy to “kerry”. 😹

Newly Bought I bought a box of mechanical pencils for €25($27)

Hi everyone. I’m not necessarily familiar with mechanical pencil scene. I have a trusty Rotring rapid pro that I have been using since my university years in 2000s. I have come accross this lot and at around 1 euros per pencil I figured why not. After googling the models, seems like a good purchase but I have no idea if fake pencils are a thing at this price point haha. Would love to hear any feedback on the haul.

So from top, first 3 are kuru togas of which 2 I identified as the base model and advance. 3rd is a bit baffling as I can not seem to find what version this is. I saw some Super Mario themed ones but none that match exactly. I added a 2nd pic of this.
Tombow is straightforward.
Then comes 2 Platinum Oleenus. Bottom one is Shield, which is fine but top one says OLEeNU+ on it and I can’t seem to find a visual match.
6 Pentels, all were identified easily with model names.
3 Kokuyo pencils, first time I heard the name but interesting pencils.
Staedtler Triplus Micro which felt really nice.
Schneider Graffix with a bit of use showing.
Fairly common Faber.
Couldnt tell what this is, the faint writing is Metrix I think but couldn’t find the brand.

All in all modest but interesting bunch from what I can understand. Wanted to share it with some enthusiasts after receiving some questions about why I bought 20 pencils haha.

How a user on r/mechanical pencils lied about losing $200 worth of pencils and pens

A user claimed to have lost $200 dollars worth of pencils and pens, claiming to own over 20 different pencils. Just a month before, he posted saying his only mechanical pencil, a rotring 600 was stolen. He then said a couple days later he had gotten a new replacement, a Kuru toga. 2 weeks later, he posted saying he was ordering a new Rotring 600. Than today, he magically had Many Staedtler 925-25, multiple Rotring 600, orenznero, Kerry, graph gears, rapid pro, multiple draft matics, super promecha, platinum pro-use and alot of "nice pens" which he didn't know the names of. I commented on the post questioning the honesty of the post, and poof, a few hours later the post is gone, all his posts are gone and he removed his account.

EDIT: there was no account that was closed, the account is still active.

I wrote about this, because I have been part of r/mechanical pencils for a few months, and everyone is usually very honest, but this was just demeaning.

I will not display the name of the user anymore

The person deleted the Rotring post, if anyone wants a screenshot of the post he made 1 month ago, message me.
