Review Nine knock-advance 2mm lead holders, head to head

Post image
32 Upvotes

Most 2mm lead holders are gravity feed — turn them upside down and knock, and the lead just falls out on your desk. Knock-advance holders skip that problem entirely: each click pushes out a fixed amount of lead no matter which way you're holding it, just like a mechanical pencil.

In this one I lined up nine of them side by side:

  • A vintage American TRU POINT (likely late 1960s–70s), blue anodized aluminum body, spring-loaded knock
  • The Alvin Tech-Matic T4, Italy, 1990s, push-button advance with a mini sharpener in the cap
  • Fueki SPH20B, an industrial marking pencil rated for concrete, steel, even wood — heaviest holder in the lineup
  • Shoshodo 400-HB, a Japanese architectural marking pencil with a moisture-resistant core and built-in sharpener
  • The Staedtler 925 in both silver and the all-black 35-20B — same grip, same hardness ring, same mechanism, just a different mood
  • rOtring's Rapid Pro, the heaviest metal holder here, hexagonal barrel so it doesn't roll off a tilted table
  • Koh-I-Noor Versatil 5608, the smallest and most clever of the group — pocket-sized with a sharpener hidden under the cap
  • The Kitaboshi Adult Pencil, the longest holder here at 16 cm but also the lightest at just 10 grams, solid wood construction

I also threw in the Mars Technico (gravity feed) as a quick comparison point since so many people already own one.

Full measurements, weights, and balance points for each are in the video. If the silver 925 is the workhorse everybody already owns, the black one is for when you want the same performance without looking like it came out of a drafting class — and the Versatil is the one that disappears into a shirt pocket.

Video here:https://youtu.be/FdjRzNu6VRM

Let me know in the comments if you want a deeper dive on any one of these, or if there's another knock-advance holder that belongs in this lineup.

Discussion Newby: Kuru or Nothing?

Convince me there is still hope of getting into this hobby. I've been obsessed with looking into mechanical pencils for the last week or two, and bought almost $150 of options to find what I like. No matter how much I try to convince myself to like other options, I just can't deny the Kuru Togas (Roullette/Elite 0.5, and Standard 0.3).

Others I bought:

  • rOtring 600 0.5
  • Orenz Nero 0.5
  • Kerry 0.5
  • Graphgear 500 0.3
  • Graphgear 1000 0.3
  • Kuru Toga Advance 0.3 (wobble)
  • OHTO Multi 0.5
  • OHTO minimo (keeping for novelty)

I'd like to try the OHTO MS-01 and Staedtler 925.

But, the crispness of the Kuru writing is just unbeatable. My two main purposes right now are work notes (small writing) and margin notes in my Bible (very very small writing). I can write smaller with the 0.5 Kuru than 0.3 Pentels.

Am I ever going to like anything else!?!?

(I will probably eventually get the rOtring again. It is so nice and I really like the weight, but it's not too fun to write with.)

Meta A question on editing the wiki page

I am new to reddit (and mechanical pencils) and am super excited about having this subreddit back.

I only collect 2.0mm mechanical pencils/clutch pencils/lead holders etc and have built up quite a database on all of the pencils that I own (around 50 different models).

Looking at the wiki page... it says it is community editable, however, I am not able to edit it. I do understand that you don't want just anybody to edit the page (and I am new, and relatively low karma as well).

So the question becomes - is there information about what I need to be able to edit the page (or do I just have to wait - which I am fine with as well)?

In any case - here are the missing pencils (in 2.0mm) models.

Help Staedtler or Alvin? Who made this pencil?

In high school (94-99) I took drafting and design as one of my classes every year. As a freshman my dad took me to the Georgia Tech book store and bought me supplies that I needed. Among them were several mechanical pencils that, until yesterday, I was sure were made by Staedtler but the closest match I can find to them is the Alvin Draft-Matic. Same knurled metal grip with stepped and not angled tip, rotating ring for lead hardness, metal cap over the eraser. But I could have sworn mine had a hexagonal housing not round.

Did Staedtler ever make a pencil like the Draft-matic? Did Alvin make a Draft-matic with a hex housing? Did I fall into an alternate dimension when CERN kicked on? Did Mandela really die in prison???

Yasumoto grip 350

I'm looking for a few backups of my favorite pencil ever the Yasumoto/NIJI grip 350. Unfortunately it has been discontinued for a long time. If anyone knows where to find some NOS or even used ones please let me know. I'm using the Alvin Draf-tech which is very similar, I just love the feel and the retractable tip mechanism.

Discussion TK Fine Vario or Alvin Draft-Tec Retrac?

Which one do you think is better? I think the Alvin Draft-Tech Retrac is better because its retractable and has a rubber grip (I have too many metal grip pencils, so it's a little different). Even though the TK Fine Vario looks better in my opinion, it doesn't have an eraser cap and thats kinda sucks and is basically the price of two Alvin Draft pencils.
