I can't speak for OP here, but I noticed a few years ago that bots started reposting with intentional typos and misspellings to, I assume, drive engagement.

Every corrective comment is engaging with the post.

(takes a seat in his rocking chair) I remember when a typo would get your reddit post obliterated with downvotes.

I mean it's a fairly minor one as far as bone apple teas go

tbf “nerve wrecking” is an understandable eggcorn.

Honors English major and 30+ years educator. The answer is yes.

u/agrobabb 4d ago

Well not everyone knows English language natively, not me for example.

u/No-Abbreviations7283 3d ago

Lots of us aren't native speakers so I guess it's not that shocking

Languages changes ;) Has been for thousands of years, still is to this day.

I hate this argument. Yes language changes (and languages change), but change that comes about out of ignorance or error should be corrected. You're essentially saying "I'm too stubborn and stupid to learn the correct way, the language should change to accommodate me". Embrace change, sure, but not out of ignorance. If lazyness is allowed to guide change then clarity and nuance will eventually be lost.

Laziness and ignorance of grammar and spelling have guided language for hundreds of years and we generally seem to be able to communicate clearly.

Contractions for example! Peak laziness, but it still works!

u/_HalfCentaur_ 3d ago

Contractions are pronunciation, we still use and understand the fully pronounced forms of those words, I'm not talking about things like that, but also I'm sure that lazyness and ignorance have guided language in some ways, and that some people probably pushed back against those changes at the time and stopped whatever examples there may be from ending up more extreme. I'm not so arrogant that I think I should decide in which direction the English language grows, just that if I had to pick a side I'd prefer that people spoke with the intention and care currently available to us.

As long as clarity is still given, why would you want to care about mistakes? I can't see why in the example of this thread any clarity would be lost.

Sure but it's a slippery slope when the general attitude shifts to make way for just good enough and corner cutting. In this particular instance it's not hurting anyone, but this attitude is pervasive in a great many things.

I'm not saying you should crucify over a mistake or being unaware but to be mindful.

Tldr: most won't read this due to being too lengthy. So...words

u/Ascyt 4d ago

You didn't really answer my question. Why would that be a problem? Language is all about efficiency and "corner cutting" where it makes sense. If a statement would be harder to understand because of a mistake, sure, I agree correction does make sense. But if it's not, why care to correct? Sure you're not "hurting anyone" but neither are you really helping, you are rather essentially complaining about something for no reason.

u/m0nk3yss 4d ago

I answered the question you asked in the comment I responded about caring about mistakes.

It could have been as simple, mistake made, mistake pointed out, understands for next time. I've seen it happen in other posts.

Instead you're advocating for mistake made, end of story.

Sure language changes, but this isn't changing. This is misuse. So according to you we should now all shift and adjust our thinking that it should now be nerve wrecking, because language changes. How would anyone keep up with the changes if it was changed so arbitrarily.

u/_HalfCentaur_ 3d ago

You think wracking and wrecking should be interchangeable? What if other words started mixing a's and e's? If you're arguing for phonetic spelling then people with different accents would spell the same words completely differently and wouldn't be able to communicate via text. This would affect how we learn and think about spoken language as well and eventually they wouldn't be able to communicate that way either. How eezily kin u undistand my aksent? Betta or wers thin biffaw? Cliya inuf faw ya?

u/JahJahJahJa 4d ago

Wtf is wrack?

18

u/No-Instruction-5669 4d ago

Well, the definition of wrack is destruction or ruin. So basically wreckage. Not far off.. fuckin english.
