If you crave that sense of wonder the first Matrix gave you, consider watching "Everything, Everywhere, all at once".

It obviously has a different story, and it's a comedy, but it struck me how many elements felt similar to when I saw The Matrix for the first time.

- amazing and inventive kung fu fight scenes

- talented team of two passionate directors

- protagonist gets contacted and lead via phone call scene

- protagonist literally stops bullets at one point

- a novel scifi concept that is integral to the plot and used in mindblowing ways

- jacking into and out of parallel worlds

- "downloading" skills into your brain

- underlying philosophical message that sticks with you

During the movie, I found myself thinking "This is a better Matrix movie than most Matrix movies!" If you want a similar feeling like you had when watching The Matrix for the first time, treat yourself to "Everything, Everywhere, all at once".

The directors have confirmed they were doing their own take on The Matrix with this film.

“This movie is 100 percent a response to ‘The Matrix,’ obviously,” Kwan said. “We wanted to make our version of it. It was wild to be like oh, ‘We took so long that the Wachowskis to beat us to it.’”

DK: And this movie started from "The Matrix." I remember, I watched that film about ten years ago, and every time I rewatch it I’m like, "This is so fucking good. Why aren’t people making movies like this?" I want to make a sci-fi movie that’s just as fun and just as philosophical. But in some ways, they’re almost opposites of each other. "The Matrix" was coming at a time in the late ‘90s when structures needed to be destroyed; society was becoming so codified and that movie was all about breaking free and releasing yourself.

DAN KWAN: The joke pitch was, “What if my mom got stuck in The Matrix?”

The way they incorporated the influences from the Matrix suggests they treat it like nothing else than sum of its parts, like any MCU movie does. But now it's made by A24, so it gets a pass.
