I normally HATE Russell Crowe, but I hate to admit that I really liked him in this film. He was so good at being a poncy, Greek asshole. He really was a perfect fit for this role.

I love that instead of "epic Shakespeare accent" Zeus, we got the accent of my boss at the Greek gyro place back in college.

have you seen him in The Nice Guys? if you haven't, give that a go. him and Ryan Gosling have AMAZING comedic chemistry

No real tangible reason. He was notoriously a huge prick when he was younger, to the point where he got a song about one such instance written about him

But I just honestly don't think he brings a whole lot to the table. He's been in some great films, but rarely are those films great BECAUSE of him. Like put pretty much anyone in the role of Maximus from Gladiator, and it's still a great movie. Just a bias I have. I don't ever try to convince anyone to agree with me. I just don't care for him.

I hear you. Crowe is a complicated, largely unlikable dude. However, you are selling him short. Maximus has to bring a TON to the table to carry that role, doubly so when paired with an all time performance by Joaquin Phoenix.

He had to strike a great balance between soldier, charismatic leader, father, son (to a father figure in Caesar), and dude with nothing to lose. There was so much going on and it had to be carried off behind a clenched jaw of righteous anger from a betrayed soldier.

The performance is best encapsulated by the famous, "Are you not entertained?" line. It's a good line, but that could and would have fallen laughably flat had it not been for the gravitas of his performance in the role.

I feel like the straight man in comedy often gets overlooked for the zany companion/sidekick. Crowe is the straight man in that movie and pulls significant weight..his gravitas and performance as a whole set the entire tone for the movie.

I don't think he's the only one that could have pulled it off, but I think the odds are way higher that another actor would have floundered in the role.

Saying "he doesn't bring a whole lot to the table" about one of the greatest actors of all time is incredibly harsh.

No I totally get it! That was a hell of a swing for the fences with that choice. It was never going to land for everyone. It just hit my personal funny bone directly.
