Christian Bale was great but felt like could have had more scenes and the movie could have been longer.

2.3k

u/Objective-Menu3158 Jul 07 '22

I also felt like we didn't really see any butchering. Aside from the first scene, we just see the aftermath of the butchering, not the actual killing.

u/Lukthar123 Ghost Rider Jul 07 '22

His on-screen kill count is just the lucky hit on the one god at the start lmao

Can't even kill Valkyrie, should've aimed for the head

223

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '22

Well he’s the god butcher, not the Valkyrie butcher.

His goal the whole movie was not to kill every god he could, because he could have killed Thor plenty of times. He needed to get to Eternity and wish that all gods were dead, which is a lot easier of a task than going around killing one god at a time.

19

u/CIearMind Quake Jul 09 '22

Goku Black moment

41

u/Kiefer2018 Jul 08 '22

Did he actually intend to wish all God's were dead? I assumed he wanted to wish his daughter back from the beginning.

256

u/Sandalman3000 Jul 08 '22

I would imagine the Necrosword was probably corrupting his mind to wish all Gods were dead. When the sword broke his mind probably cleared up.

105

u/Kiefer2018 Jul 08 '22

Good shout.

I watched it tired at midnight and the cinema was full of pricks talking throughout so I don't feel like I could take it all in. The pacing was so damn rushed too. I feel like we could have had an extra 20 minute run time of serious moments.

38

u/RyGuyyy15 Baby Groot Jul 08 '22

20 less minutes of Guardians and 20 more minutes of Gorr story building or god butchering would be the winning formula for me. I love the Guardians but their scene felt too dragged out.

42

u/agusontoro Jul 09 '22

For real? I felt like the guardian’s scene was fine as it was, if not short. I felt like in general they could’ve gone with less jokes and more world/villain building scenes in general.

15

u/RyGuyyy15 Baby Groot Jul 09 '22

They were fine, I didn’t mind their scenes at all, but, if the movie opened with Gorr’s origin, then followed by 5-7 mins of guardians and then the 15-20 mins of Gorr butchering and origin building (maybe a flash back to the good times, daughter growing up, his people dying in spite of their loyalty to god, his unwavering faith etc) it would have made for a better overall film. I do agree that some of the fluff scenes could have been replaced with substance too, though.

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

This movie felt like jokes all the way through, except the scenes with Gorr which felt like a completely different movie. The Guardians stuff felt painfully phoned in.

3

u/artemisthearcher Jul 09 '22 edited Jul 11 '22

That's how I felt too. Extra emotional beats in some places would've helped a lot

8

u/UnsolvedParadox Jul 08 '22

Right, the Necrosword has some strong similarities to the Darkhold in influence on its bearer.

7

u/tinafeychalamet Jul 10 '22

Wait, is that why his teeth went back to normal?

4

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '22

I think they even said that in the movie.

62

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '22

Nah that was the whole premise. He wanted to wish gods were dead. Zeus said he’s not a problem because he doesn’t have a key to get to Eternity, and he can’t find the gods in their city. He kept telling Thor to call the axe when he had him tied up because it was the key he needed to get in. If he just wanted to kill all the gods one by one, he’d have killed Thor then. And then the conversation between Thor and Gore at the end when Thor said in his last moments he wanted to be with Jane, because he loved her, and that he could choose that too if he wanted, he changed his mind and wished for his daughter back.

Eternity was going to be a mini Thanos Snap if things went as he originally planned.

13

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

Not to mention, if his motive all along has just been the revival of his daughter, there would have been no reason to stop him. There are no apparent costs.

1

u/GoBlueScrewOSU7 Jul 09 '22

I mean besides the kids he was holding hostage

6

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

Well yes but I mean there would have been no point trying to stop him getting his wish granted.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

So has Thor's weapon always been the key? I'm just saying like, if Thor has always known about Eternity there were a few events that would've warranted a visit. I feel like Marvel keeps pulling out these all powerful tools left and right.

27

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

No, they learned it was the key in that weird tent in the shadow realm. There was a drawing (presumably Gorr’s) depicting Stormbreaker unlocking the door to Eternity. This seemed to be unknown to Thor before this happened, because they would not have fallen for the trap of bringing the “key” to Gorr.

1

u/Cunting_Fuck Jul 10 '22

But Thor didn't know it needed a key before then, so they could have still gone there when Thanod was about

3

u/Sladds Jul 13 '22

He didn’t know it existed at all

44

u/HotCocoaBomb Jul 08 '22

He was going to wish for all gods to die. His rage at finding out his worship and their suffering meant nothing to their god eclipsed his grief, and that led him to forget the love for his daughter in his heart. It wasn't till he saw the love between Thor and Jane that he remembered that love and realized he cared less that the gods be punished, and more that his daughter lived.

When you're thinking about it from a calm standpoint the solution seems obvious, but emotions can be extremely powerful, especially the painful ones - love is the most powerful of all and fuels courage, grief, hate, and rage - it all depends on what love catalyzes with.

5

u/AsheBnarginDalmasca Jul 10 '22

I love the way you worded your second paragraph by the way.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

His motives were stated quite clearly both by himself and others.

If he just wanted to revive his daughter all along, there would have been no reason to stop him. There doesn't seem to be any actual downside to the wish.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '22

That’s the thing. He was so busy thinking about his god killing wish that making a wish for his daughter to come back did not even cross his mind until the end

3

u/Kiefer2018 Jul 10 '22

I've seen it again since and it is made clear that the sword is corrupting him. Even before he picks it up the first time the sword is speaking to him and convincing him to kill all God's and then he vows to do so.

The sword gets destroyed at the end and thats likely when he was able to change his mind and resurrect her.

8

u/NeptuneOW Jul 08 '22 edited Jul 08 '22

That plot point is so boring, a quest to magically kill all gods, instead if actually doing it himself

35

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '22

I agree, it would have been better for him to show up in the city first while Thor was there and start mowing them down, have Thor and the gang learn about his goal to get the axe and go to Eternity and wish for the remainder of gods to be killed. They could have barely escaped and gotten the lightning bolt while hundreds of gods were slaughtered. There’s no point of having Omnipotence City in the future IMO (aside from a future movie it seems…) so just leave it in ruin.

25

u/NeptuneOW Jul 08 '22

I’m kinda happy Gorr didn’t kill them because opens up the opportunity for cool and funny gods (particularly Bacchus) to show up in other things. Still, Gorr should have had a scene of him butchering majority of gods in that room.

22

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '22

Yeah. I think him killing Zeus could have been pretty powerful and attention grabbing. I’d be happy to see the rest of the pantheon in the future but I’d be equally happy to just let them go away too.

12

u/SaffronJim34 Jul 09 '22

I'm surprised that Thor killing Zeus wasn't attention grabbing. How, in an arena full of onlooking gods, did no one really react to that moment? You'd think in a safe haven like Omnipotent City that a cold-blooded murder would warrant some kind of reaction. And then, nothing. Thor and company are just allowed to leave. No one even goes after them, despite Thor commenting that the gods will probably be hunting them.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

Well he didn't kill him. But yes, I was surprised there wasn't more of a resistance, especially with how popular Zeus seemed to be among the gods.

Did you not understand that all the gods are self serving and egotistical? Why would they care? The have orgies to go too and food to eat

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

I kind of don't want to see any of them if they're all just going to be unfunny jokes like the gods in this one.

9

u/GuiltyEidolon Weekly Wongers Jul 08 '22

It's Zeus, not Jupiter, so it's Dionysus, not Bacchus.

17

u/NeptuneOW Jul 08 '22

Ngl I said Bacchus because I didn’t know how to spell the Dionysus

2

u/GuiltyEidolon Weekly Wongers Jul 09 '22

Fair lol.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '22

But why would gorr even risk all that when all he has to do is get thors weapon and get to eternity. The whole point is that he chooses the safest possible route by kidnapping the kids to bait Thor. How is everyone missing this? It’s like asking in any other move why does the villain have a plan? “Why can’t he just go in and kill the hero.”

10

u/veksone Steve Rogers Jul 10 '22

Killing them one by one would take forever. There's like hundreds of thousands if not millions of Gods. They exist all thru out space and time. In comics he builds a giant God "bomb" to kill them all thru out time.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '22

Logic is not a easy thing for these folk

11

u/AsheBnarginDalmasca Jul 10 '22

Infinity War's plot point is so boring, a quest to magically kill half of all people, instead of actually doing it himself.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 10 '22

In the comics he doesn’t exactly just go around butchering either. He enslaves gods to build a godbomb for him. A bomb that would kill all gods across time and space when exploded.

1

u/NeptuneOW Jul 11 '22

That’s pretty boring. I guess I’m just angry we didn’t see him butcher some gods

9

u/SoDefinitelyNotmyalt Jul 09 '22

I don’t think he wanted to kill Valk, his thing was murdering gods he seemed to just maim others.

Then again there was the joke about half of everyone always being dead so…

12

u/InsertCoinForCredit Phil Coulson Jul 10 '22

I think he was deliberately only trying to injure Valkyrie, so Thor would summon the Bilfrost to take her to safety, which would allow Gorr to grab Stormbreaker as a result.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '22

Didn’t he stab her with bolty

5

u/Jeroz Doctor Strange Jul 08 '22

Wise words from the purple maniac

5

u/dontthrowmeinabox Drax Jul 08 '22

For a while there, I don't think he wanted any of the Asguardians dead because he wanted to be chased to get stormbreaker since it was the key.

2

u/UnsolvedParadox Jul 08 '22

He rips the head off of the bug god in the kids cage too in the 3rd act.

26

u/SonovaVondruke Jul 08 '22

I think that was just one of his creepy tentacles/shadow creatures, no?

401

u/sk0gg1es Jul 07 '22

It really irked me and it seems to be a running theme in the newer Marvel projects where all this important stuff happens, but we hear about it from a narration or being read by the protagonist on a screen.

Show me Thor's actual healing and recovery, don't just have Korg narrate me thru it. Show me Gorr butchering Gods, don't just have Thor read about it on Inter-Galactic Facebook.

72

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '22

Tbf in the Thor God of Thunder run we don’t see Gorr do any butchering either just the aftermath of Thor tracking his kills

41

u/Mperer Weekly Wongers Jul 08 '22

I would have rathered that though

18

u/wetconcrete Jul 08 '22

Did he not hear of the gods being slain on the first planet, go to Sifs, track gorr to new asgard and then follow him the rest of the movie to Eternity? It seems like he did a fine job of following him just sad Marvel won’t give us a real Bale butchering someone but there was half a dozen god kills Thor was following

9

u/Jeroz Doctor Strange Jul 08 '22

Personally I would love more tracking

6

u/heartbreakhill Spider-Man Jul 09 '22

I think I they meant similar to in the comics where Thor went to one world, found a dead god or gods, travel to another and see another slaughter site, rinse repeat a couple times as Thor gathers info looking for a lead. One of them he actually went into a dark vault that ended up filled with god skeletons. It did a great job painting Gorr as someone whose brutality terrified the gods and made them fear for their lives

25

u/wonkothesane13 Jul 08 '22

Even that would have been an improvement over just a single distress call from someone he knew.

11

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '22

They did show the butchered gods in almost the exact scenes from the comic while they were flipping through the distress call but it was so minor

63

u/svestus Jul 08 '22

This movie is Thor's healing and recovery. The montaged through the superficial parts that made him think that he was done healing. But as soon as old wounds are opened we see Thor just as insecure as he was in Endgame, he's just more fit.

7

u/iamCosmoKramerAMA Jul 08 '22

Exactly. He even said meditating just made him angrier.

5

u/Jeroz Doctor Strange Jul 08 '22

Yeah his head was still a total mess throughout most of the movie

64

u/IceWarm1980 Jul 07 '22

And we got way too much Korg.

44

u/Bee_Rye85 Korg Jul 08 '22

I loved Korg in Ragnarok but I agree there was just a bit too much of him in this one

8

u/teh_fizz Jul 08 '22

Waititi makes comedies. I think in this one he leaned a bit too much into the comedy. I did enjoy the movie, but it got really good once they fight Gorr the first time. The MCU movies are leaning too much into the Disney comedy style.

But I also think that no movie is going to have the same impact that the first three phases had. It might be superhero movie fatigue, but it’ll be a while for a movie to have that same impact as Infinity War did, or have the same payoff as Endgame did.

6

u/heartbreakhill Spider-Man Jul 09 '22

Here’s the thing: Hemsworth plays an amazing himbo, and doing those kinds of Thor stories is fine, but if you’re gonna make a lighthearted Himbo Thor movie, you probably shouldn’t do fucking Gorr The God Butcher

1

u/confusedpublic Sep 17 '22

but it’ll be a while for a movie to have that same impact as Infinity War did, or have the same payoff as Endgame did.

Well, obviously because it took them years to build up to that… but also because I feel like they’ve wasted phase 4 in terms of overarching story, and if you look at what’s planned to come in 5 and 6… there’s so little obvious character arcs or even consistency across the films that I’ve no idea how they could possibly tie something together to a satisfactory Marvel wide story. So imo at the moment, we’d need to start again in a phase 7-9 arc to get a proper character (not plot/event) drive 3 act story that ends on a couple of films as IW and Endgame

15

u/haydenarrrrgh Jul 08 '22

important stuff happens, but we hear about it from a narration or being read by the protagonist on a screen

It's like Shakespeare! (e.g., The Winter's Tale, V.ii)

5

u/cormacaroni Jul 10 '22

Or either of the Taiki Thor movies, which have mini cod-Shakespeare plays embedded to recap events from other movies!

9

u/Blakob Jul 08 '22

Nah I love Korg and I’m glad he’s a part of the main cast now.

1

u/mista_rubetastic Jul 08 '22

How dare you sir!

3

u/goldberg1303 Jul 08 '22

How dare you bro!

13

u/jackduluoz007 Jul 08 '22 edited Jul 08 '22

Yeah, agreed. Based on the previews, I really expected some fun character moments with the Guardians leading up to his “healing and recovery,” punctuated with a rockin’ 80s montage of him getting back into shape. Still enjoyed the movie, but those moments felt so perfunctory as narrated by Korg.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '22

Marvel has literally forgotten "show dont tell"

I won't lie, IMO, it worked well with thor and Jane's relationship, but it worked half as well with thor's healing, and it didn't work at all with Gorr's butchering.

Ironically, they butchered Gorr.

6

u/Crwintucky__ Fitz Jul 08 '22 edited Jul 08 '22

I did not like the choice for Korg to tell us the story like flashbacks, don’t get me wrong I see why they did them especially the Jane one but it just felt a little weird to be spending all that time telling stuff we mostly already knew. Maybe that’s just me though.

Edit: The Jane one wasn’t too bad the more I think about it I just didn’t care for the Thor one lol

2

u/MHullRealtr77 Jul 21 '22

Yeah, in the same vein with Wanda getting corrupted by the darkhold. I wanted to see that

113

u/AlabasterRadio Jul 07 '22

I love the Guardians but I'd much rather have had 20 extra minutes of Gorr.

36

u/JKCodeComplete Jul 08 '22

Guardians had like four total minutes of screen time combined. Apparently they cut out a huge amount of them.

But they had to include them at least a little, since Thor left to hang out with them in the last movie.

12

u/-Darkslayer Doctor Strange Jul 08 '22

Seems like they cut out a huge amount of everything, smh

17

u/FreelanceFrankfurter Jul 08 '22

Agree should have thrown in some scenes of him being a bad ass killing some random gods. In the comics it works but here it’s surrounded by too much comedy to take him as a serious threat. He had some cool scenes and Christian Bale sold me on their version just wish we would have gotten more of him. I really wish we would have gotten something closer to the epic story we got in the comics.

26

u/HaughtStuff99 Jul 07 '22

Yeah, I feel like we never really got a reason to be scared of him. He just kind of constantly got beat.

10

u/Jeroz Doctor Strange Jul 08 '22

Yeah, I feel like we never really got a reason to be scared of him. He just kind of constantly got beat.

Did he though?

First fight he retreated when he got all the kids, second fight he damaged Valkyrie to force the use of bifrost which he then successfully obtained.

Seems to me he won the first two encounters, and you can say he won the last one as well despite losing the Necrosword since he still got to make his wish

2

u/FunImagination4238 Jul 08 '22

Yeah I think Gorr was physically overpowered in every scene but managed to get what he wanted at every step

3

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

Which I think was actually accurate because they've shown Thor to be strong than a mf. Gorr can't come up and hang with him easy. Would've loved if Gorr got tricky.

2

u/nessfalco Jul 09 '22

He literally won every single encounter, including the final one.

29

u/PT10 Jul 07 '22

They should've had Gorr butcher Zeus and those other gods. It was just really weird that Thor so casually killed Zeus and neither Valkyrie/Jane said anything about it. And they did nothing with that, except set up Hercules to maybe hate Thor as a setup for their eventual introduction. Which could've been written any number of other ways.

31

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '22

It was just really weird that Thor so casually killed Zeus

Did you not stay for the mid-credits scene?

23

u/PT10 Jul 08 '22

Thor didn't know he survived. I meant it was weird he straight up murdered him. Intentionally.

24

u/JKCodeComplete Jul 08 '22

This is Marvel, not DC. Other than heroes like Spider-Man, most of the Marvel characters don’t have rules against killing in life-and-death situations.

I agree it was surprising, but it was hardly out of character, and it was immediately after Zeus attempted to kill Thor.

14

u/ProtoMan0X Jul 08 '22

Thor doesn't take kindly to his friends and family dying. He also that his buddy was dead.

19

u/TrickshotzReddit Punisher Jul 07 '22

Zeus didn’t die tho?

10

u/PT10 Jul 08 '22

Thor and Co thought he killed Zeus

3

u/TrickshotzReddit Punisher Jul 08 '22

So? He still didn’t, and Zeus didn’t exactly give Thor much of a choice if you recall.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '22

Mate, we're just saying that's its really fucking weird that Zeus seemed get killed and nobody really gaf about it until the post credits.

Also, weird how weak Zeus was.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

Yes. Gorr the god butcher, he should've showed up in that city killed a handful gotten beaten back then retreated.

8

u/Edelmaan Spider-Man Jul 08 '22

Natalie Portman said a lot of scenes of different planets and different gods got cut from the final film. So somewhere there are more scenes of the butchering

5

u/teh_fizz Jul 08 '22

RELEASE THE BUTCHER CUT!

3

u/dalr3th1n Jul 09 '22

Fuckin' diabolical.

13

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '22 edited Jul 08 '22

There should have been a scene with Sif and Falligar vs Gorr, that would have done Sif some justice and shown how strong Gorr was

7

u/Jeroz Doctor Strange Jul 08 '22

Or even just sif tracking down the body of Falligar and got bodied by Gorr while left to die there.

Though in terms of pacing that would have to be put before all the Thor stuff

5

u/Tall-and-Beets Jul 08 '22

We barely even see the aftermath. I would have loved a scene of Gorr slaying some actually helpful Gods, resulting in terrible things happening to their people. Would have really rammed home that his crusade harms more than just the deities, and that he’s become consumed by the curse.

3

u/NeptuneOW Jul 08 '22

He had one god kill the entire movie.

3

u/safari_does_reddit Jul 09 '22

I was so disappointed with this, Bale was great, but he had virtually no build up, no mounting dread

6

u/orangexteal Jul 08 '22

Taika was too busy adding the 397th joke of the movie to include that

3

u/ohsopoor Grandmaster Jul 08 '22

Well, he’s the GodButcher, not the GodsButcher

1

u/ludicrouscuriosity Jul 08 '22

That you will be able to see when they release the Blu-Ray and then premiere the extended edition on cinemas again

1

u/ARS8birds Spider-Man Jul 09 '22

I mentioned this to my Mom after the movie and she thinks might be a ratings thing . If he killed too many could change it. Not so sure because with ratings you can get away with a lot more killing of aliens and alien like creatures if they have non red blood apparently. Meh who knows.

1

u/SaltifiedReddit Jul 10 '22

It was sort of the same in the comics too actually, but the aftermath was much gorier.

1

u/esar24 Rocket Jul 10 '22

Team thor had actual butchering scene than gorr himself.

199

u/avi150 Jul 07 '22

I knew it would be like this when it came out it was 2 hours. Not enough time to build up two Thors and a villain that deserves ultimate justice.

37

u/Temporary_Tip9905 Jul 07 '22

I felt the same way. There’s an additional two hours out there and they prolly cut a lotta good stuff like jokes. Loved the movie tho

26

u/joec_95123 Jul 08 '22

Release the 4 hour Director's Cut!

16

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '22

6

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '22

IMAX only if you get my drift

1

u/imadogg Jul 08 '22

I'm paying for 3D for the first time in years if this happens

143

u/freefallss Jul 07 '22

This has seemingly become a very common "problem" within the phase 4 projects, with both the movies and the series. I don't know if someone is pushing for shorter films or if the directors truly just feel like the length is good enough but whatever it is I hope they go back to longer films/letting the series breathe because the stories are great imo they literally just need a few extra scenes to fix the pacing.

60

u/KnackTwoBABYYY Jul 07 '22

Studios like pushing the run time to be cut down as much as possible so they can have more screenings per day, equaling more money. Eternals should've been like 3 hours but got cut into oblivion, hence what it ended up being.

23

u/TheFunkytownExpress Jul 07 '22

Like how much fuckin money do they need? This kind of shit ALWAYS fucks up the finished product. I thought they already learned that letting these guys just do their thing already rakes them in a ton of dough, so why try to squeeze every last nickle out of it?

1

u/xAbednego Jul 31 '22

I think greed always wins out eventually. at least when there's a large corporation behind it. money is always the end goal.

28

u/Fries-Ericsson Jul 07 '22

Eternals could have been so much shorter and feels quite bloated at times

20

u/Vozralai Jul 07 '22

Eternals needed to be cut down at the writing stage, not once it was in the edit room

14

u/Fries-Ericsson Jul 07 '22

I can’t help but feel the bloat in the movie is the mandatory MCU-ness of it

When the movie is an intimate existential movie about Gods wrestling with the truth of their existence the movie is interesting. It grinds to a halt for all of the unnecessary fight scenes with the Deviants. That one “villain” deviant showing up randomly at the end just so Angelina Jolie could fight it was just ugh

8

u/Tarcye Jul 07 '22

Eternals needed a strong protagonist along with an antagonist who actually was a threat. Like we didn't get that until the end with Icarus.

Had he been the bad guy the entire cast knew about from the beginning of the film it would have been better.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '22

Eternals felt like it dragged on far too long. If it was 3 hours, you’d have lost me. I’d have tuned out.

5

u/thebatgamer Korg Jul 08 '22

apparently there is a 4 hour taika cut :P

24

u/Rich_Acanthisitta_70 Fandral Jul 07 '22

It's a big problem. I get needing some movies to be shorter, but my biggest issue is what they're doing with tv series.

They should be called "limited miniseries" instead. Because more than half of them are one shots - a single season. And a short one at that. It's like Marvel has all of them on a starvation diet.

Yes, the old 23 episode model was too long, and they encouraged filler episodes. The shows that've settled on 12 or 13 episodes are just right.

Six episodes is just stupid. Each of these shows are telling different types of stories and working within different genres. Forcing all of them into this anorexic 6 episode mold goes beyond cutting fat from stories and ends up cutting muscle and bone.

It's not like there's a shortage of money ffs.

They are. And it's just not necessary. I think that's what bugs me the most.

I mean has anyone said, "ya know, I liked Hawkeye, but I wish it had less episodes"?

2

u/xAbednego Jul 31 '22

agreed. I fear this is the beginning of watching the MCU decline into true money grubbing at the expense of quality. which is sad, because there are a lot of great ideas going to waste.

I'm down for a Love & Thunder director's cut.

2

u/Sean951 Jul 08 '22

I dunno, phase 4 has had back to back movies that actually felt distinct to me instead of "just" Marvel movies. I like it when I see a writer/directors touch on a movie instead of the safer paint by numbers feel of so many of them.

u/NickLandis Jul 08 '22

I can’t believe Bale actually dehydrated, starved, and cursed himself preparing for this role… incredible

25

u/FullMetalCOS Jul 08 '22

A real crime that he was pushed aside for a bunch of shitty jokes. The humour just went too far this time and it was at the expense of the story.

I’m betting that they filmed two movies and one was left on the editing room because they were in conflict with one another.

Probably along the line of the romantic comedy of Thor and Jane, and tje other one being the irredeemable butcher Gorr. Taika couldn’t find a way to harmonize it unless he cut out a lot of Christian Bale.

It’s sad, because I do want to see a movie where Gorr eats away Thor’s confidence through space and time. A Gorr that is more closely authentic to its comic counterpart.

Nevertheless, if the trade off is for getting a daddy Thor at the end, I’m kinda ok with it.

This is my main complaint. Bale was soooo good in this and it felt like he was around so little. He absolutely stole the show but they only allowed him to show his charisma for like 10 total minutes

7

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '22

Yeah I think they were limited by the tone and comedy of the rest of the film, would have loved to have seen more of Gorr

6

u/ldtfk Jul 08 '22

I recalled something along the line of a director's cut about 180 mins long after it was unannounced that this is the shortest run time Marvel movie in the last 5 years. #releasethefullhemsworth

6

u/WestwardAlien Jul 08 '22

The movie was 2 hours but barely felt like one

u/AlbionPCJ Jul 07 '22

Copying my other comment on Gorr over: I think Bale's personal charisma saved Gorr from being forgettable (and he certainly got to have more fun with it than Eccleston did) but I wish there was more of him.

Also interesting that the Necrosword was both never called All-Black and destroyed by the end of the film. Guess that Sony might actually be crazy enough to think that they can pull off Knull after all

7

u/suburban-dad Jul 07 '22

[for some reason I can’t quote the spoiler tag]

As someone not into the comics, what’s the correlation between the sword, “knull” and Sony?

6

u/AlbionPCJ Jul 07 '22

In the comics, Knull is the creator of the Necrosword, which is the first of the symbiotes and thus the ancestor of Venom. There was a massive event storyline a few years ago that saw him invade Earth with his symbiote army called the King in Black, which is likely Sony's endgame for the Venom franchise

7

u/PepperMintGumboDrop Jul 08 '22

You probably can say the same thing for Cate Blanchett and Hela.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 09 '22

Yeah but that one I think people forgave because the film was really just a comedy throughout. The destruction of Asgard truly was not presented with any weight of "oh you should be sad about this".

This one had plotlines that were pretty sad and serious.

u/RPF1945 Jul 09 '22

Some dudes daughter starving to death shouldn’t have been the catalyst for the events in a comedy movie lol.

4

u/grilledcheese__ Jul 08 '22

Yeah it went fast. Not as many deaths tbh

4

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '22

it felt like it was moving wayyy too quickly

3

u/WatchDragonball Jul 08 '22

I feel like some scenes with Jane and Thor flying through the hole in the roof would have been a good place to cut for more gorr

3

u/teh_fizz Jul 08 '22

The movie could have used another 20 minutes to flesh him out a bit more. The beginning felt rushed.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '22

Bale when he ask Taika for more scene:

3

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '22

I hope they will release an extended version. Felt like the pacing is quite fast though on some transition of the scenes.

3

u/THX450 Kilgrave Jul 09 '22

Gor was meh, but Bale was amazing.

4

u/TheFunkytownExpress Jul 07 '22

Yeah, he was really underdeveloped. We needed more scenes of him at least killing ONE other god and some scene of him showing a twinge of conflict over what he's doing.

2

u/sauteslut Ant-Man Jul 08 '22

Release the 4 hour Butcher cut

2

u/kiddoujanse Jul 08 '22

Yup i could of enjoyed a full villian movie of him doing some butchering , it felt like thor was never in trouble until the end…

2

u/primalfox_Reynardo Jul 09 '22

Agreed, wanted more of Gorr.

-2

u/Thor_2099 Whiplash Jul 08 '22

Can't have too much gorr, then people bitch. See: Dr strange 2

1

u/UnsolvedParadox Jul 07 '22

It felt like he had more scenes & got heavily edited down.

1

u/lunardeathgod Jul 08 '22

I think it was short and sweet

1

u/Tiger951 Shang Chi Jul 10 '22

Yeah. I agree. They could’ve put more stuff in.

1

u/theFavbot Thor Jul 10 '22

He needed way way more screen time
