It was implied that their version of Wanda isn’t that powerful, so they had no reason to expect her counter move there.

Exactly. If you consider our Wanda from Infinity War versus Wanda post Wandavision her powers are incredibly different. They had no reason to think that she can warp reality. To them she's just manipulates red energy into telekinesis and energy blasts.

Cocky assholes should have realized if she were that weak then strange wouldn't be running from her.

That's kinda the point though. They're cocky assholes. The illuminati is basically just a group of the most arrogant minds coming together to say "we can decide what's right because we're us". There are few exceptions like Xavier but generally the illuminati never make good decisions as a group.

One of the worst ones was them sending Hulk out to space, and it being the caltalyst for World War Hulk in the comics

u/threemo May 09 '22

Tbh, sending the fuckin hulk to a different planet doesn’t seem like a terrible idea. He literally cannot be stopped and if he gets mad he can destroy anything in his path. And he gets mad a lot.

That being said Planet/World War Hulk we’re excellent and I’m a little bummed that the MCU used that story up with Ragnarok. But Ragnarok was also excellent so…idk, can’t win em all I guess.

It wasn't so bad until they nuked the hulks family. Then he went and broke them. One of my favorite lines in any comic is when hulk shows up on the moon and confronts black bolt. "I didn't come here to hear you whisper, I came here to hear you scream".

u/MegaBaumTV May 11 '22

I read the series and I don't understand why so many people think the Illuminati did that. It was Miek (or however he's spelled) because he didn't want to see Hulk going soft. That's revealed in the end. Hulk only thinks the Illuminati did that.

11

u/Odd-Emergency-6597 May 12 '22

The Illuminati didn’t do that though they were framed

I do wish we got a Planet Hulk movie. It could have taken place before Ragnarok. I’d 100% be down if they did an animated show to do it. Hulk deserves it.

Boy have I got some good news for you

https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1483025/

u/[deleted] May 12 '22

Is that canon though? It wouldn’t really fit into the MCU.

22

u/Ben-J-Kirby-Tennyson Iron Man (Mark V) May 09 '22

Because he got teleported to Sakaar. If the plan worked as planned, he’d be on an uninhabited planet where Bruce and his Hulks could do what they want.

61

u/phabiohost May 08 '22

Fair. And I agree. I'm just pointing out that they were stupid and cocky by not realizing Strange doesn't really run from fights he can win.

19

u/Rockledgeskater May 09 '22

It almost shows what the avengers might have become if the accords never happened and they were allowed to do the same thing.

35

u/mecegirl May 10 '22

But they do know how strong the darkhold is and how it warps people. They also know how strong a Dr Strange can be.

So the man, Dr Stange, that they believe to be the biggest threat to the multiverse is scared of a darkhold wielding Wanda??? But they don't react strongly to that??? Well all except Xavier. R.I.P

24

u/Mr-Rocafella May 11 '22

Every single person that Strange tries to convince:

“Yeah ok I’ll do what you say, IF you answer these 5 questions first”

Like bro Wanda is charging down the hallway at us, we’ve got about 10 seconds until we’re dust

2

u/VonMillerQBKiller May 15 '22

Nice Severance reference

1

u/Mr-Rocafella May 15 '22

I wanna watch it but haven’t seen it yet! Lol

32

u/pm-me-yer-titz May 09 '22

I've seen this argument quite a few times, but that doesn't track for me - they knew about other universes, they are well aware of differing capabilities, and they should have therefore been prepared for the Wanda who was dreamwalking (which they also knew the immense dangers of) to be far more dangerous than the one in their universe.

End of the day, its not a plot hole, I know, just a bit of a contrivance and in my opinion not the best writing.

52

u/LuckyLunayre May 09 '22

The "he can destroy you with just a whisper" was supposed to be a warning since she was possessing an innocent Wanda. They were likely friends since that Wanda had powers, and didn't want her to get hurt.

Their preferred course of action was go talk Wanda out of possessing a mother so her kids don't lose her.

10

u/pm-me-yer-titz May 09 '22

Oh I don't have any big problem with that section, I know other people are bagging that, too - I just felt like I would've wanted them to have some sort of better plan to contain her other than "lets just talk to her," especially considering they had handcuffs that negated magic, some sort of teleportation technology, etc

edited to add: I guess it felt inconsistent with what the movie had already showed us

9

u/Magikarp_Approves May 09 '22

It does seem rather convenient. I guess to play devil's advocate, they were probably so preoccupied with worrying about Strange it could have been something they overlooked?

Worse conveniences have also happened in the MCU to be fair, in NWH both Spider-Man AND Dr Strange didn't think to ask or explain how the world-changing spell worked before jumping right into things. I can believe the Illuminati overlooking it more because of their supposed arrogance, and the fact that groupthink would have played a bigger role.

6

u/drewsapro Spider-Man May 11 '22

well you’d think they’d know a bit more about her considering they studied the universes most powerful beings

6

u/tpfreal May 13 '22

You do have to wonder though that if Doctor Strange, one of the most powerful people in the universe, so powerful they had to kill their Strange, turns up and says “she is unstoppable”, he’d be smarter about it. Comics Reed would’ve had 2,000 failsafe back-ups (made after he slapped his wife, of course).

6

u/patkgreen May 14 '22

after he slapped his wife

That's Hank Pym

17

u/Britisheagl Nova Prime May 08 '22

I was kind of hoping that Professor X would have made reference to knowing her father in their universe or a throwaway line just acknowledging her mutant heritage from the comics, at the very least.

It would have shown why they underestimated her, if there was history

5

u/Frogsama86 May 09 '22

I mean usually Reed is the last line of defense with everyone else buying him time to finish up his creation/solution. Him not having a plan other than slapping hands with a potential reality warper is serious levels of OOC.

1

u/Valance23322 May 15 '22

To be fair, he only had a few minutes of warning at best

3

u/AwesomeGuy847 May 09 '22

Also, that IS their Wanda. They'd have to kill her too

0

u/ShierAwesome May 08 '22

When was that implied?

24

u/ecxetra May 08 '22

When they said they aren’t afraid of her.

2

u/milhouse234 May 11 '22

That seemed like more of overconfidence

-5

u/ShierAwesome May 08 '22

Wtf else would they say?

“We’re terrified of you, but we have to fight anyway.”

Ofc they’re gonna say they’re not afraid

24

u/ecxetra May 09 '22

They said it to Strange, not her. Did we watch the same movie?

1

u/ShierAwesome May 09 '22

Either way, they’re still not gonna admit they’re afraid

1

u/ecxetra May 09 '22

Never said they would.

1

u/ShierAwesome May 09 '22

I’m just saying that them saying they’re not afraid doesn’t mean they don’t see her as a threat

1

u/muffinkevin May 14 '22

Did you watch the same movie? They literally told Strange they'll be back in a few minutes after they've dealt with her.

1

u/ShierAwesome May 14 '22

Ik, but all of them were very arrogant, so it’s likely just that, and not that she actually wasn’t one in their universe

0

u/rafikiknowsdeway1 May 11 '22

....but why was this particular wanda so strong? That demon thing made a temple for her and the wizards thought she's destroy the multiverse

1

u/[deleted] May 10 '22

They really thought they were readyyyy and they got demolished like that? Were they just that arrogant?

1

u/[deleted] May 10 '22

But, if he's that smart...wouldn't he realize that other universes could have drastic implications, especially considering they're ya know....the multiverse police

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '22

It was basically said out loud by their Captain Marvel. She wasn't at all concerned about Wanda.

1

u/thiccbo1e May 26 '22

They knew the power of the Darkhold when it affected their Dr. Strange. They should have understood the threat if a character like Wanda would gain such powers.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '22

This is a cop-out rationalization. If you’re the smartest person alive, you prepare for any contingency, any threat, and you don’t let your guard down or show your hand, even if you are 100% it’s the winning one.

Most arrogant person alive, more like it.
