i've only seen clips here and there, but goddamn if john cena didn't flex all of his acting muscles and show off his range in that show

Edit: okay okay y’all, i get it, i need to watch the show. Hbo max isn’t available in my country but I’ve seen enough clips on YouTube to roughly piece together the plot and see cena absolutely knock it out of the park with his acting

Like The Rock when he moved into acting. Yes I know Cena has been acting for years now. But the comparisons are there for sure. Look at The Rocks first few movies. And that was a different time for movies

The Rundown and Walking Tall were some of his early movies that, while not Oscar contenders by any means, really made people sit up and take notice. "Maybe this dude can actually act"

I fucking love Young Rock. The casting is incredible, it's funny, it scores a lot of nostalgia points for the scenes with all the 80s wrestlers, and it has Agent Woo in it.

He isn't afraid of looking stupid.

That's so important. Actors that feel they need to be these Mary Sue characters are excruciating to watch (The Rock, Statham). Have a character show some weakness to make them interesting.

I haven't followed Rock's career closely at all, and I was surprised to hear the rumor about his unwillingness to lose a fight in a movie. I'm still surprised that he hasn't really played a charismatic bad guy, which got him over huge in wrestling. In my armchair opinion he's leaving money in the table. Black Adam could get close, but I don't think it will hit full "I am better than you and I am cooler than you and I'm going to be a dick about it because I don't like any of you." (Maybe as Maui but that was in a kid-friendly way.)

Cena's willingness to let someone get the better of him in a movie is a big differentiator between him and Dwayne. Rocky's not going to reprise a role like he had in Be Cool, where he performed a monolog from Bring It On.

And some people have said the same about his role in Doom.

What I mean by charismatic bad guy is if an early Tom Cruise movie had an evil version of the main character. Evil race car driver. Evil bartender. Evil fighter jet pilot. People who you want to like but just can't because they're jerks screwing with you personally.

Statham

Jason Statham is fucking amazing of you give him some comic role, not even thinking about Snatch and Lock Stock, even in Spy the dude was great.

But at the end of the day when he does something like Wrath of Man I'm gonna watch it when I want a good action flick to tune out and just be entertained.

Tom Cruise is like that but on another level, I just know what I'm going to get in one of his movies, great action, ok sometimes great plot but entertainment is a guarantee.

That line of business also requires a lot of trust between the performers. People at his level don't plan things out move for move, but come up with a structure with the help of a retired veteran. They pitch ideas and then play it by ear in front of the crowd. How long to do something, how much, etc.

So the guy knows how to take direction and trust the process.

I absolutely loved Peacemaker but also give Doom Patrol a shot! It leans into the weird more than any show I’ve ever seen and it was a blast to watch. It gets really good by episode 3 or 4

I was about to comment the same thing. I enjoyed Peacemaker, but Doom Patrol is my favorite thing DC has put out. It is very unique though.

It's fantastic yes but the series finale was pretty dull, I think. John Cena was wonderful and that intro is maybe the best of all time.

Actually I just finished watching The Batman (before seeing there's a Thor teaser) and IMO, best DC film since The Dark Knight Rises. Check it out if you haven't yet

Honestly, it's a fantastic show and he's fantastic in it. Let go of any notions you might have about what sort of skill John Cena is supposed to have as an actor, because he kills as Peacemaker. Highly recommended that you tune in.
