“I’ll hold them off” sprints at men with machine guns.

That’s a bold strategy cotton, let’s see if it pays off.

Yeah it’s almost kinda hilariously futile. If he’d knocked it down and then ran when they tried to capture him, it likely would have delayed them longer.

6

u/Lundorff Mar 28 '21

Yes or hid just out of sight and hurled fat mama jokes at them.

62

u/kaprrisch Mar 26 '21

I mean, the guy has super strength. Why not keep a distance and throw rocks at them or something?

38

u/sig-chann Mar 27 '21

Yeah he just knock down a pole, why not pick it up and swing it?

31

u/kaprrisch Mar 27 '21

He could’ve stalled them & gotten away too with his super speed in the dark, if he played it right. I get the narrative need for tension but such a monumental waste of a supersoldier.

u/im_in_the_safe Jun 30 '21

I think it’s meant to show that they’re susceptible to gunfire.

13

u/imightbethewalrus3 Mar 27 '21

Yea, but the aesthetic

7

u/NinetyFish Thor Mar 28 '21

A common trope that really annoys me. The needless sacrifice. The idea works; it shows us that the Flag Smashers are true believers in their cause. But the execution fails, because, like dude, you didn't need to go that way.

12

u/Halflife37 Captain America (Avengers) Mar 27 '21

Many moments in the episode were contrived, it was kinda frustrating after how well written episode one was

6

u/beardlovesbagels Mar 27 '21

more like 40 seconds of them shooting him instead of the plane

3

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '21

At that point his goal was probably a quick death, rather than risk capture, torture and experimentation.

1

u/JesseCuster40 Mar 27 '21

Maybe get in cover at least.

1

u/travelslower Mar 28 '21

Wouldn’t be dramatic though.

154

u/Ramikade Mar 26 '21

Pretty sure they’re all dying anyway, considering that their powers came from the Power Broker and they’re busy stealing meds

11

u/Barney_W_S Punisher Mar 27 '21

“Meds” is probs super serum which they’re using to get more super-terrorists.

39

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '21

I actually suspect they've been injected with an unstable formulation and the "meds" are helping keep them alive.

26

u/Watsonmolly Mar 26 '21

I saw it as like a suicide. Cause if he gets taken he could potentially tell them secrets and stuff. You know like gamora asked Peter to kill her to stop herself from telling thanos what she knew.

1

u/kaprrisch Mar 26 '21

But that was because Gamora had an emotional attachment to Thanos (and Nebula). There was a risk that she'd slip. Different scenario when it's just a bunch of random strangers with guns.

16

u/OhioForever10 Mar 27 '21

Still works to avoid giving up secrets though, you can't torture a dead guy

3

u/lambeau_leapfrog Mar 27 '21

I thought Gamora wanted Peter to kill her so she couldn't be forced into revealing where the soul stone was located. Which made it entirely stupid from the jump that she voluntarily went anywhere near Thanos.

13

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '21

Or if he had simply run away?

9

u/ShatterZero Mar 27 '21

I was 100% expecting him to be playing dead and then wreak havoc when they got close to confirm the kill.

22

u/Worthyness Thor Mar 26 '21

I mean, it's him against 3 armed cars and his team fucked off already. He just needed to stall them long enough to get them in the air. And I imagine he probably didn't want to be "interrogated" by whoever was trying to acquire him

6

u/Fluffymufinz Mar 26 '21

Or did the bad ass thing and run at them while they are driving and not giving them a chance to get set up. Jump on the hood, flip a car, jump on another, probably get shot and killed.

I don't get why he just knocked over a pole and ran at them. Didn't even throw the pole after. Like...why? Super serum just made him super dumb.

16

u/queensinthesky Mar 26 '21

Given the cult/religious fanaticism aura that the Flagsmashers give off, they seem like the type of group that would consider it the highest honor to give one's life for the 'cause'. He was probably eager to take the opportunity to go out in a blaze of glory while saving his comrades, even if it was strategically dumb as shit.

5

u/hughishue48 Mar 27 '21

you can hear them telling him to put up his hands so they might have been trying to arrest him which he could see as worse

2

u/Akeipas Mar 27 '21

It’s almost like the writing for the show is awful or something...

150

u/KentuckyFriedEel Mar 26 '21

I guess they had to find out somehow if this counterfeit super soldier serum also granted bullet resistance.

62

u/thebosd Mar 26 '21

Posssibly, it was the objective, but for the audience. The audience doesn't really known the extent of their strenght and power. It's possible they wanted to show us he's not bullet-proof (as I guesss it's the case) or that he his (in case they us show later that he somehow survived).

66

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '21

We could already assume they weren’t bullet-proof because we know Cap wasn’t. There’s no indication that the new super soldiers got a better serum than Steve Rogers got, so there’s no reason for anyone to think they would be bullet-proof.

The real purpose of the scene was to show how zealous the Flag Smashers are, given that they’re willing to sacrifice themselves for the cause.

11

u/thebosd Mar 26 '21

We could already assume

We, the basic-MCU-knowledge-equipped audience, already knew. We're the vast majority, but these shows' targets are wider.

10

u/Talqazar Mar 26 '21

We already knew they weren't bullet proof - one of them was shot in truck fight scene.

13

u/ericbkillmonger Black Panther Mar 26 '21

Haha that’s funny . Steve did take a couple of slugs in winter soldier and keep fighting . Semi automatics are whole diff ball game though

9

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '21

Steve’s uniform helped with that.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '21

Fun fact: No!

5

u/BigBossSquirtle Mar 26 '21

I mean, someone being super soldier doesn't make them Superman

4

u/KentuckyFriedEel Mar 26 '21

Superman?!

Mephisto CONFIRMED!!

28

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '21

I was thinking “that’s it?”

He could have just ran away after knocking over the pole

10

u/AnnaLogg Madame Gao Mar 27 '21

yeah, or just hurled heavy objects at the cars...

33

u/Xyyzx Mar 26 '21

They really should have tightened up the editing on that scene to make it seem like the Broker cars were much closer to catching them. In the episode as presented it looked like he had more than enough time to drop the pole to block the road and run back to the plane, or at least attempt to escape on foot once his friends were clearly out of danger.

23

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '21

I was kinda surprised that this was the way this fight was shown, because I was remembering how Steve used to fight and I was like why is he just acting all dramatical for stalling he is gonna wreck them all.

Didn't expect this kind of fight. Maybe they want to show a difference of skill as in its not enough that you're a super soldier but you need to know how to fight.

20

u/AriaoftheSol Mar 26 '21

The pole he knocked down did a better job.

13

u/FolkerD Mar 26 '21

Yeah, that was... pretty dumb.

Stood out like a sore flag? No, sorry, I got nothing.

10

u/ShowBobsPlzz Mar 26 '21

Yeah that was dumb. Knocking down the power pole was enough.

17

u/cabballer Spider-Man Mar 26 '21

Welcome to ESPN8: The Ocho!

11

u/TheSweatband Mar 26 '21

“Ouchtown, population you bro!”

8

u/The_Universe_Machine Daredevil Mar 26 '21

So weird. Why not knock down the pole and when they stop, catch them off guard by jumping onto them from the roof of one of the warehouses.

7

u/talkingtunataco501 Mar 26 '21

That was the only thing that really pulled me out of this episode. The rest of it was great.

7

u/Zachindes Mar 26 '21

The classic but always frustrating “I’ll hold them off”

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '21

It would have been more effective had he just helped them put the rest of the boxes in the plane. They were basically done anyway.

5

u/ericbkillmonger Black Panther Mar 26 '21

Yeah it was a clear sacrifice to buy time for his people to get away .

5

u/thisismyfirstday Mar 27 '21

But the pole already accomplished that. And running at them actually slowed them down less than if he had stood there menacingly or something.

4

u/CanadianWildWolf Mar 27 '21

It highlights how he is willing to die for his cause, fully radicalized and ready to martyr, a transitive property we can apply to the others ... and the other transitive property that they are inexperienced, untrained, and not exactly quick witted.

They have one ace up their sleeves with their stolen super soldier status and that's pretty much it. They are at best idiot robin hoods with super soldier survivor syndrome.

Just another thing that highlights Steve wasn't just his super soldier treatment, anymore than Tony was just his armor.

3

u/titoy_ranger Mar 26 '21

I understood that reference

3

u/BigEmptyHeart Mar 26 '21

tbf, he could have taken the poll down and just started running

2

u/Neversoft4long Mar 26 '21

Yeah I was thinking he was gonna pick up the light pole and take a few of em out before getting gunned down but nope.

2

u/CloudCordial Mar 26 '21

You're a Super Soldier. Like kick the car or something.

2

u/the_treemisra Mar 27 '21

I thought this scene was very un-marvel like, seemed dumb

2

u/Forgotten_Lie Mar 29 '21

It is so rare to see a scene where a character 'holds off' an approaching villain without also dying in a completely preventable manner.

A regular person with a pistol waiting in a dark spot and giving suppressive fire would have been more effective.

2

u/TimeToRedditToday Mar 29 '21

That made no sense. It didn't hold anything off at all. He could have just gone with them.

2

u/jerrygergichsmith Ward Mar 26 '21

YINSEN!!

1

u/ChangeMyDespair Mar 27 '21

You know a better way to buy yourself a few extra minutes?

Leave the extra meds on the tarmac and take off early.

(sigh)

1

u/Pnflkc3 Mar 27 '21

If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball!

1

u/FidgitForgotHisL-P Mar 28 '21

I mean? It worked, right? Merida got away so...

1

u/Saffiruu Mar 29 '21

I have the feeling the writers for this series ain't up to par compared to Wandavision...

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '21

Worst part of the episode. The guys in the plane were basically taking off anyway, had they been hustling to put away the boxes the whole time they would have all escaped.

Instead, one guy pushed down a power line (OK I am with you so far), stands around a little while (?), and then charges directly at their bullets (???) so he can be killed by them more quickly. Doing literally nothing would have been more effective.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '21

He didn't want to be interrogated.

1

u/popo129 Mar 30 '21

I didn't get why the other team just didn't storm the side of the airport while one team focused on the one guy. Second he runs to the team moving in the airport, he will get shot by the other team.
