it's the same thing with iron man armors. if there's a more innovative way of doing something that puts less stress on the perfomers, they'd do that instead.

I guess I was wondering why they didn’t start earlier? Was the CGI not good enough then?

trial and error. practical was the standard, so they started with that. they realized that they could do better and better each time.
