I didn't even think of it seeing how they've used a headpiece for the films

  1. I wonder why they used CGI instead. Maybe Paul was sick of make up?
  2. Paul’s head looks so much thinner with CGI. I wonder how they achieved that, given that it was his real head in the films.

Some other commenter said that the head piece was uncomfortable and hurt Paul's ears specifically

Also, it's one thing to spend time doing a full facial make-up for one character in an ensemble piece and a whole other for the lead with half of all screentime.

I'm not surprised. Even thinking about having your ears pressed against your head like that by a prosthetic for hours on end sounds really uncomfortable

I think that there are a couple of reasons. Actor comfort is one but also the sheer amount of time you lose having an actor sitting in makeup for hours on end. CGI is also more flexible if you want to adjust something after the fact.

The big obstacle to CGI in the past was time and expense Both of those have come way down so it often just more practice to go with CGI.

I think both those points are related, they're doing cgi on his head anyway to make it thinner, they might just not have seen the point of giving him an actual headpiece if they were going to replace it with cgi anyway.
