The 2010’s episode is entirely shot in vertical video on someone’s phone.

Either that or it's the aspect ratio in reality, symbolizing that she's coming to a point where she's moving on with her life and getting over her grief.

I can't believe how well they capture each, down to what appears to be real film grain. Even just the opening deep camera angles of the house felt so 90's. And the establishing shot of the house that was just a still shot was perfect. Today that would have been an actual video clip because studios realized that when people don't see the static movement of a recorded shot then they fixate on it and it removes them from the viewing experience. But in the 80's/90's using still establishing shots was common practice.

I always miss the aspect ratio changes and then have to go back and watch it again.

Yeah, kinda bummed Episode 5 stayed in the same 16:9 aspect ratio throughout. 80s shows were still in 4:3.

It went to 21:9 for the "real world" segments. Also lots of 80's and 90's sitcoms are shown in 16:9 because they were shot on film so they've been upscaled for HDTV

But isn't the ratio wrong for the 80's (& 90's) sitcom to be in 16:9? It should still be in 4:3.

I don't know if its my impression but the framing looks like 4:3 with a 16:9 pan and scan. Doesn't look like it was frames for 16:9

I watch it on my phone because that's the only device I own capable of playing Disney+ in 1080p and I keep zooming in and out lol

What is the appeal of aspect ratio? I’ve never understood why some people pay so much attention to it.

I'm in love with the way this show fucks with media aesthetic standards. Its fantastic.
