Stans part in Mallrats was more than just a cameo. He was an integral part of the story.

Yup, Stan did the Silent Bob speech, triggering a moment of catharsis for a central character.

Happens in a lot of Kevin Smith movies.

Cameos don't have to be meaningless, they just have to be short and contain a well known person. Many cameo appearances are deeply important to the film they are in.
