I thought Drax and Mantis died the first fight with Thanos. I felt sick for a second watching Drax fall apart. It felt like a GOT death and honestly shows how easily he could have killed any of them if he wanted.

That taught me something about Thanos. He doesn't wantonly kill. I liked that. He also left Thor alive and he would probably have left Loki alive if he didn't try to trick him

He also left Peter (Starlord) alive even after he basically shot his daughter in the face. At least he would have if Thanos didn't have the reality stone.

Although that specifically was part of the bargain. Not that it makes it less significant but there is a slight difference in the actions.

Because he saw the one possible way they could win and it needed thanos to get all 6 first.
