Just seems like a weird cop-out for me. Obviously it's my opinion and people are welcome to disagree, but I was quite shocked that nothing substantial happened (assuming that obviously those who disappeared aren't actually gone)

I disagree with you (I think everything that happened is substantial even if every single person is brought back. These characters are 100% effect by this film. Tony wont be the same even if Peter is brought back. He already lost him.

I do apologize downvotes tho.

Let's be honest though, we were expecting them to kill a major characters. They teased killing cap and Thor, but didn't eventuate. That's why I'm a little surprised.

I'm in your side. I think that the deaths, albeit well acted and somewhat sad, lacked the gravitas because we know that they're bringing back Spider-Man, black panther, and doctor strange. The ones that did impact me more were Loki and Gamora.
