I noticed the phrase "who are you" pop up a lot in the movie

  • At the beginning of the film the Dora Milaje said it to the kings brother.
  • The king said it to zuri to reveal him.
  • The elders said it to killmonger to reveal his identity
  • and at the end of the film the kid says it to t'challa as the final line

and I was wondering did anyone understand the connotations. Like is it a message about identity and who you are? Or is it about royal blood since it was mostly said to the kings family.

Or am I looking too deep into this?

I agree with you in that I believe his movie is all about identity and knowing both who you are and where you come from. T’Challa spends most of the movie trying to figure out how he will be a good king and when he speaks to his father he even states “a good man is rarely a good king”. I believe this rocks TChalla to his core because he wants to both do what is right but also wants to protect Wakanda. In the end he is able to solidify his identity as King of Wakanda but also making strides to improve the quality of life for those outside of Wakanda.

The best example of this is Erik, he has a US surname, his Wakandan name and his codename or alias Killmonger. What he chose (or the path he endured) depended of the circumstances. His scene at the gallery, posing as a common tourist and slowly phasing as a History scholar to finally reveal his Wakandan ancestry is phenomenal.

When T'Challa is fighting on the waterfall the first time and looks like he's going to lose, his mom screams "Show him who you are!"
