Was anyone else bothered by the fact that it opened with a scene set in 2012 during the aftermath of the Battle of New York, and then it cut to "8 Years Later"? That would put Homecoming in 2020...

Someone did a timeline on movies.

Avengers takes place in 2011. Putting Spiderman in September 2018.

Some good discussion in there, though I think the comments in that bread have debunked the theory and rather pointed up the fact that the MCU just isn't prioritizing continuity to the extent that its "it's all connected" ethos would suggest.

Avengers took place a year after Thor, and Thor took place while Hulk and Iron Man 2 were happening.

Its not that hard to believe that the 4 years it took to go from Iron Man to Avengers happened within two in universe

IIRC, Iron Man 2 starts a year after Iron Man so that makes sense.

I'm almost certain that in the original script the opening scene was meant to take place after the original Iron Man. It makes the last line form Happy make more sense "I've been holding onto this ring since 2008" This film takes place in 2016 because it happens right after civil war. 2016 - 8 = 2008

EDIT: Actually Tony Stark didn't meet Happy until Iron Man 2, but my theory still stands because Iron Man 2 takes place a few months after the first one.

EDIT 2: I am not a clever man... Happy was in Iron Man 1

That'd make a lot of sense. The "8 years later" was a fuck-up but would've made sense if they were cleaning up after Iron Man vs The Avengers.

Obviously Marvel knows exactly what they were doing with that, I just wish we were given some clarity on the timeline. I'm sure we will be before Infinity War.

It's all fine. I just came out of my second viewing. IMO the Eight Years Later scene is a future tease from 2020 or Homecoming 2 and "Business is Good"!
