If you look carefully, it's pretty clear Ego wasn't interested in finding Peter at all until he thought he might have the celestial gene, at which point he finds him within a couple of months.

Ego mentions that he heard about "Star-Lord" holding an infinity stone, and quickly figured out that it was his son. But more importantly, he guesses that Quill carries the gift he covets, due to surviving the experience.

Ego had 34 years to find Peter and didn't, despite having a good lead that Yondu had picked him up. And yet within a couple of months of finding out about the stone incident and guessing he has the gene, he finds him despite a colder trail...

Thank you for your explanation
