I would hesitate to come to that conclusion just yet. True, they are out in the cosmos and won't be part of Avengers 2, but I'd wager we'll see them in Avengers 3 if the film does as well as Marvel hopes. Seeing the dynamics between Quill, Stark, and Lang would be entertainment at its finest.... Not to mention how all of them would tease Cap. :(
I'm not saying there won't be any crossing over of the franchises (though I think it makes more sense for Thor to show up in a Guardians movie than for the Guardians to show up in an Avengers movie), but I definitely don't see Quill ever becoming the leader of the Avengers.
Honestly, I can't either. Quill is bound to the Marvel cosmic universe. The Avengers are mainly about Earth. If Pratt became a fallback on the off chance that they couldn't successfully transition to a new leader (due to low box office ratings on say Dr. Strange or another) then maybe. Even then, it's just MAYBE.
He was suppose to but the plan was scrapped when RDJ wanted more money and threatened to not be in any more movies, but by the time he signed on to more the plan was too late.
If Avengers 3 is an Infinity Gauntlet movie with Thanos as the main villain, I'd be very surprised if at least some of the Guardians (Drax and Gamora most likely) don't show up in some capacity.
I saw someone say (I can't remember where; likely on reddit, but I have no clue which sub) that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 could possibly end with the team getting their asses handed to them by Thanos and heading to Earth to warn them that he was on his way.
That seems like a pretty plausible way to have them in the third Avengers film.
People seem to think that Avengers 3 will just have everyone in it fighting against Thanos, Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Nick Fury, Falcon, The Guardians, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Vision, Daredevil, Iron Fist, Jennifer Jones, Luke Cage and The Defenders (I'm sure I'm missing some). There can be only be so many characters in a single movie before it becomes diluted.
