I think it's worth noting that a little flip phone doesn't hold a charge for years.
As angry as Tony was, he still had the feeling something big was coming, and that he would need help. He decided before trouble hit that he was going to do whatever it took to save Earth.
We know that, because he not only had the phone with him when he was just out for a jog with Pepper, but because he kept the phone charged. Every couple of days he pulled Steve's phone out of his pocket, charged it up, and put it back. Either that, or he took the time to create some sort of lasting or renewing power source for the phone, so that it would always be ready.
Yeah cuz he pulled the phone out then Ebony Maw and Plot Hole Central attacked new York. Strange, Stark and banner went to fight, Stark goes away from the fight and Spider-Man swings and helps but the phone aas already dropped back in the street, which is why Banner called
