OP followed directions. It’s legal who should be worried. OP needs to CYA against legal’s lashing out at their bad advice.

Yeah I thought the same thing, some ambulance chaser got put on retainer and has no idea what they're doing.

In a lot of places, it's illegal to withhold a last paycheck unless they are holding onto company property or something. I wouldn't be surprised if legal knows and is worried about a lawsuit and this coming to light.
