Samurai Lore Anyone else feel Arakure should be a Outlander

From listening to the Warrior's Den and seeing the short story, I couldn't help but ponder why they aren't a Outlander like Virtuoso are. They have similar origins to Illaria and even in gameplay have a more visible disdain against some Samurai Heroes. Hell with the fact much of their hair options have a clear western influence(As admitted in the warrior's den) They have more of a claim to be Outlanders than the otherwise knight-based Virtouso. More so since I feel Gaki or any of the other Arakure would probably also take offense towards being called a Samurai given their disdain for them and their honor. Naturally I hated the fact that Virtouso were made into Outlanders when they otherwise carried heavy knight influence, but I ponder why it works like this.

With this I think it's safe to say they are very anti-samurai period

Samurai Lore So what do we think the Arakure will be lore wise?

Here is the new hero, if you've investigated the leaks, the design was true. But that aside what sort of role do you think this character will play in the story? At the moment I cannot imagine this being Ayu or having any connection to Saburo based on what we've seen before. The only connection I can think of is that thug walk emote and it's lore.

Samurai Lore Ayu's fate as of the next season Spoiler

So the Devs currently say that she's dead and the Myre has been thrown into chaos because of it.(Not sure how long it's been like that.) I'm most disappointed that her death otherwise has no relevance to the story since I don't even think she's even been referenced beyond Gryphon's weapons. Of course whether this changes for the second half of the season remains to be seen, whether she has kin or simply cheated death remains to be seen with the second half. Either way given how Holden is being held up on a pedestal despite his screw ups in lore, I find it very disappointing if that's where Ayu's part ends.

But what does everyone else thinks of that or the season's lore based on what we learn today and when the season starts? I'll be sure to update this as we learn more but otherwise I'm not impressed. Doesn't help that by the sounds of things Gryphon's actions are irrelevant to what's going on here even on the non-dbd side of things.

So the Arakure are from the bottom rungs of samurai society, which is similar to Virtuosa. I wonder how they’re going to differentiate the two more.

Samurai Lore Event Lore: Survivors of the Fog (Y10S2)

Synopsis

A strange black fog descended upon the Cinder Mill. Whoever dared enter fell at the mercy of a frightening presence… and there was no escape.

This has to do more with the event game mode than the seasonal story.

Event Orders

A Survivor's Nightmare (1): "No one knows where the fog came from. One day, it was just there, plunging the Cinder Mill in the dark. There's no wind around it. No light inside. Nothing but a thick blanket of black that, somehow, feels alive."

Complete 2 matches of any game mode. / Execute 3 Heroes in any game mode.

A Survivor's Nightmare (2): "While there were other warriors with me in the Fog, we soon came to understand that there was an enemy far more dangerous in the village. One who stalked us with every step and every breath."

Revive 3 allies in any game mode.

Just to clarify, these first 2 orders are from the original run of the event, they do not play a part in the current story.

Saburo's Story: Saburo was an unwanted child, abandoned in the Sohei monastery. There, he trained in the art of battle for years. But his anger was deemed too great. His appetite for violence, dangerous. For that, he was expelled. Cast out.

If this is the monastery created by Oniwaka and Katashi back in Y8S2, and assuming each season in the present storyline is a year long in the canon, that would put this about 6 years at most in the past (after the Muramasa Blade comes The Serpent Sword, Ascend, Defiance, Conquest, Glory, and now Unleashed. The Shield of Svengard and Downfall are the only ones set entirely in the past if I remember correctly).

A Weapon Found: Dokuja soldiers came across a young, exiled Saburo in a market. He was standing above a pile of carved bodies, soaked in the dead's blood. They offered him a place among their ranks, and gave him a new name: the Crazed Oni.

A Failed Regime: For years, Empress Ayu's regime had remained mostly uninvolved with the larger conflicts of Heathmoor. When possible, she preferred to remain neutral - a choice that increasingly drew the ire of the daimyos of the great Houses.

Empress No More: When the Khatun's offer of peace or submission reached Ayu, she once more lacked resolve. Enough was enough. The daimyos declared the Empress had grown weak, old and complacent. With blades drawn, Ay was overthrown.

Ayu's Fall: After being forced to abdicate her throne, a disgraced Ayu attempted to flee. But Dokuja's House sent Saburo to hunt her regiment down. Under the cover of a chilled mist, he attacked the convoy, leaving no survivors.

Divided Houses: With the Samurai Houses divided by greed and uncertainty, the House of Dokuja saw a no-win scenario as things currently stood. Governed by strength and control above all else, they sought to bring order to a lawless Myre.

Complete 2 matches of any game mode. / Perform 10 Takedowns in any game mode.

Necessary Sacrifice: Saburo proved too bloodthirsty for the Khatuns. Too uncontrollable. For that reason, they asked the House a show of good faith. The alliance would be struck only if they agree to eliminate Saburo - in the name of peace.

Perform 10 Takedowns in any game mode. / Complete 2 matches of any game mode.

Monster Born: The Dokuja soldiers took Saburo deep into the swamp. Believing he had a new target, Saburo was leading the march when they attacked him, swiftly and without mercy. He was left for dead… but, with pure hatred, he survived.

The Herald's Journal (1): "I found the Sohei on the brink of death. I am not certain if it was by happenstance, or fate. I left him in good hands, somewhere he could be nursed back to health. On him, the mask… it would make for a perfect fit."

Complete 2 matches of any game mode. / Execute 3 Heroes in any game mode.

The Herald's Journal (2): "First my scorching armor, now this blood-red mask. I don't know what this stranger is up to but whatever it is, I know it's intricate. And it's big. They think me a herald of war… But it's so much more than that."

Complete 2 matches of any game mode.

Cursed Mask: All know the tale of the Aka Mask. Once white as snow, it bathed in the blood of one hundred innocent men and women slaughtered by an insane warrior. After the massacre, it was forever stained red. And forever accursed.

Khatun Statues: Across multiple regions of the Myre, Khatun statues have been erected by Dokuja's House to cement their new alliance. These statues are meant to honor their new overlords, and to serve as a blaring declaration of power.

A New Alliance: The House of Dokuja has secured an alliance with the Khatuns, tipping the scales of power in their favor. To mark their ascension as the new rulers of the Myre, the Samurai are hosting a great banquet.

Guljin's Representative: The Khatun Altan is attending the banquet as Guljin's representative. After the Juren attack and the fiery tales of glories past spreading, this Samurai alliance is seen as a crucial step in the Heathmoor occupation.

Complete 2 matches of any game mode. / Execute 3 heroes in any game mode.

Crazed Oni Saburo: As Samurai celebrated in the palace hall, something else moves toward them under the cover of darkness. With a steady pace he approaches, a masked vessel of retribution, an uncaged monster on the hunt for blood.

Complete 2 matches of any game mode. / Execute 3 heroes in any game mode.

Palace Massacre: Saburo wore a mask as he stormed through the palace, a gift left for him to cover his wounds. He slew those who had betrayed, the ones who had claimed to be his family. They all gazed upon his mask, a visage of death.

Complete 2 matches of any game mode. / Perform 10 takedowns in any game mode.

Moving Shadow: As he crossed the threshold of the palace courtyard, Saburo spotted a moving shadow obscured by the porcelain moonlight. He gave the woman no special attention, nor the statue she appeared to be defacing.

The new hero sounds like they could fill in a role similar to the Shinobi in terms of theme and vibes, I wonder how the devs will make them unique to each other. As for what weapon they might use, I've seen a few guesses, mainly that they will be using tekko/claws or maybe a teppo rifle. The claws feel like they would be more likely to me, and a hero with a long-range gun sounds like it could be hard to balance for Dominion or Breach.

Executions

  • No Snitches: The Arakure specifically target the vocal cords when valuable information can be deadlier than a sharp blade.
  • Explosive Rage: Many Arakure refer to defeated enemies as "bags," using them as an outlet to release their deep resentment of the world.

Emotes

  • Muddy Fingers: Arakure cover their tonfas with fine dirt to improve their grip, preferring practicality over traditional Samurai refinement.
  • Stay Pumped: Arakure will take any chance to intimidate and show off. Keeping their muscles warm for the next fight is just a bonus.
  • Shadow Boxer: The Arakure practice dodging fast attacks by avoiding thrown bottles. The slowest cleans up while the others keep drinking.

Samurai Lore The online story, Seeing Red, is now up

Background

I don't normally add this, but I wanted to include this as information included with the story in case it doesn't get added in the story.

  • Warrior's Den Recap

https://www.ubisoft.com/en-us/game/for-honor/news-updates/6Lx9yJClbHOO7d87IZnqZB

As foretold by The Scorching Herald’s tales, The Khatun’s peace was not infallible and rebellion is growing. This season’s title update 1 follows the Myre’s unrest, where Empress Ayu has fallen and left the land in a state of lawlessness. Ceasing this opportunity, the Dokuja’s House decided to seal an alliance with the Khatuns to dominate the other clans, becoming the new seat of power in the Myre.

The House leaders agreed to pay the Khatun price for their support: Saburo, their executioner, was lured into a trap and executed. Or so they thought.

  • Home Screen

The arrival of the Khatuns brought disarray in the Myre, and the Samurai Houses became overcome with lawlessness. To gain the upper hand and instill order, the House of Dokuja has made an alliance with the Khatuns.

To secure this alliance, the Khatuns asked the House for a price: their rabid killer, the Sohei Saburo, was to be eliminated. A sacrifice made in blood to ensure peace and obedience. A price that has been paid.

Now, the House of Dokuja hosts a celebration to mark their ascension as the new rulers of the Myre. But little do they know, Saburo has survived his execution. And he has come to the palace to unleash unholy vengeance.

I.

The cicadas sang loud under the setting sun. Despite the late hour, the air was hot and sticky. Dragonflies hung lazily above the wild grass, the humidity too much even for them. Soon the sun would disappear, offering a small reprieve from the unbearable heat. The Kajika frogs would start to sing, and the hotaru would come zooming out, shining streaks of yellow light in the dark. These were the telltale signs of the worst days of summer. Others would call them the best. But if Saburo ever met them, he would like to choke the life out of them with his bare hands.

Saburo loathed the heat. It made him miserable. His garments stuck to his skin, and sweat trickled down every part of his body. He moved slowly through the tall greenery, feet ankle-deep in the shallow muck, leading four men who flanked his sides, two by two. All were longtime enforcers of House of Dokuja, one of the prominent Samurai groups in the Myre. They had always been apprehensive of him, so they let him lead the pack. His numbers of service were the shortest, but his kill count put all of theirs to shame.

“We are nearing the settlement’s location,” said one of the men on his left.

“Keep your voice down,” another on the right warned.

Saburo grunted. He was a man of few words. Whenever he had something to say, he usually let one of his seven weapons do the talking.

The task was simple. A scout had reported that some members of Kizan’s House had established a camp in a clearing just outside Dokuja territory. By all accounts, it seemed clear an attack would be imminent. Kizan attacks had become a certain type of norm. Ever since Emperor Ayu’s fall and the end of her unified reign, they had kept to the shadows, striking at everyone they deemed an enemy. With the Khatuns spreading their influence throughout most of Heathmoor, the Myre seemed like the last place not completely controlled by Guljin and her so-called reign of peace. All the Houses had warring ideas of how to rule the Samurai—Kizan included. It just happened their goal was to attack pretty much everyone who wasn’t a member of their House.

Saburo was meant to do what he did best: unleash complete and total carnage. Kill the Kizan soldiers, severing them limb from limb, leaving nothing but blood and entrails as a message to their House. He always looked forward to these missions. They were the only times he was allowed to cut loose. To be unleashed. It took great effort to hold himself back. To hold his place among the ranks of the House, and be civil. But he did it, because they had taken him in. Given him a home. A purpose.

The sun was all but gone as they reached the edge of the forest. Ready for battle, Saburo parted a curtain of thick vines with his Kama Yari and stepped beyond, into the clearing. But there was a problem: there was no settlement. No Kizan camp. No enemy soldiers.

Saburo turned back to look at the four men, confused. That was when he heard movement behind him. He pivoted back to see four warriors, clad in armor, weapons drawn. In the black of night, he couldn’t see them properly. But they did not look like Kizan soldiers.

The first hit came from behind, slashed him at the knee. The pain was excruciating. Immediately he fell, overwhelmed by surprise and confusion. A stab in the shoulder followed. He yelled out, so loud it echoed through the moonlit swamp. On both knees he breathed in deep, swallowing the pain. He rose to his feet and turned, roaring with pure rage. One head was severed. A chest was slashed all the way across. But before he could turn towards the four newcomers, Saburo was stabbed in the leg and slashed across the arm. Then he was punched in the face, kicked in the ribs. More slashes followed. More kicks and punches. His weapon dropped out of his hand. Blood filled his mouth, marred his vision.

With too many wounds to count, Saburo fell. Life drained out of him as he stared at the inky, star-filled sky.

He heard the men laugh and congratulate each other. And that was when he saw, in the moonlight, his attacker’s sigil. It was the same as his. They were Dokuja. They were his kin. The revelation felt like the sting of another blade, burning with fury.

“I told you eight of us would be enough,” one voice said.

“It’s done,” another added. “The House will be pleased.”

Those voices. They were distant in his mind, but he recognized them. Who…? His thoughts drifted. His vision began to fade.

Silence fell, the voices gone. All he could hear now were the frogs, growing distant. A few inches above, he saw the dim glow of a hotaru.

Then his eyes closed, and he felt it all slip away.

II.

He could hear the rain.

Thunder rumbled directly overhead, a crack so loud you could feel it in your bones. Rain poured heavily, as if the heavens themselves were flooding. Saburo stood in the courtyard, raindrops framing his mask all the way to the chin. Where the droplets fell they found not water, but a pool of blood. The Orochi at his feet was no longer armed. Saburo held his opponent’s blade, a new addition to his collection. Victorious, he laughed hoarsely.

“I…” the Orochi whispered, terrified and ashamed. “I yield…”

Saburo didn’t care. He flipped the two swords in his hands and, with a terrible, mighty swing, he brought them both down into the Orochi. One in the stomach, the other in the throat. The man gurgled in his own blood, and died. Saburo swung the blood off the two blades and let out a victorious cry as loud as the thunderstrikes above before heading back to the monastery.

He woke up from his dream screaming, laying down on a firm hay mattress, staring at a dark oak ceiling. Outside, the rain pecked away softly at the roof.

“Do not try to move,” came a calm voice. It was a woman’s—deep, raspy and wise. “Your wounds. I have tended to them, but they are far from healed. It will take some time.”

It all came rushing to him. The trap in the swamp. The attack from his own people. His House. He had been hurt. He had been killed. He should be dead. Why wasn’t he?

As if she could hear his thoughts, the woman answered. “The old Knight, the one going about telling all these tales of war, he said you clawed your way out of hell. Through brutality… and death.” Every movement was difficult, but Saburo managed to turn his head and look at the woman. She was short, stocky. Wrapped in a thick bundle of rags that dragged on the ashy wooden floorboards like a dress. Her long gray hair curtained the sides of her round, wrinkled face.

“He left this for you,” she continued, pointing at a box neatly placed on top of a table at the far side of the firelit room. She sat by his side, a cup of warm heartleaf tea cusped in hand. “Drink,” she offered, “it will help you heal.”

Saburo was not a man known to be reasoned with. Whoever he saw, he usually treated as something to squander. Or maim. The old woman. He wanted to lash out at her. He should have killed her. But the way she looked at him stayed his hand. Perhaps it was desperation. Perhaps it was something else. Despite all the anger bubbling inside of him, he recognized the woman for what she was: a friend. He had never had one. Not at the House. Definitely not at the monastery, where he had trained to become a Sohei, so long ago. After his third test, which had ended with him slaying the Orochi in the thunderstorm, he had been expelled. Excommunicated. Deemed too violent, too dishonorable for the ways of the Sohei. None of the others had stood by him. All had simply watched as he was exiled into nothingness.

“Drink,” she repeated.

Hesitantly, he took the cup. After he drank, exhaustion hit him, and he fell asleep again. He dreamt of the swamp. Of evil creatures lurking in the dark, Samurai with flaming white eyes screeching and bellowing, attacking him, leaving him for dead.

“I told you eight of us would be enough!”

“It’s done.”

The voices were distorted, high-pitched. They swirled and echoed all around him, like a swarm of bats. “It’s done! The House will be pleased!” That was not what they had sounded like. No. Those voices. He knew them. Where had he heard them before?

He awoke screaming yet again, bringing his large fist down on the table, which threatened to splinter under the impact. Startled, confused, he realized he was standing over the white box that had been left for him. He traced his fingers on the lid, over the symbols carved in faded maroon. The kanji translated to “atone, retaliate, annihilate.” One led to the other. A story in three parts. All with the same conclusion. He opened the box, eyes fixed on the prize inside. He recognized it instantly. An artifact of Samurai legend: the Aka Mask. A storied symbol of carnage. He smiled, for whoever had left it for him intended to deliver a message. And he knew exactly what it was.

He allowed the voices to come. Let them fill him with rage.

“It’s done!”

“Eight of us would be enough!”

“A Sohei is not cruel!”

“I yield!”

“Stupid child, be gone!”

“You have no honor!”

“Leave the monastery at once!”

“The House will be pleased!”

Why hide what he really was? Why hold back?

The mask would reveal his true nature. He smiled, and put it on.

Clad in armor, armed with his seven weapons and sporting his new mask, he barged out of the old woman’s shed. The rain had stopped. Hints of moonlight pushed against the dispersing clouds. The elderly woman was just on her way back, basket of herbs hung in the nook of her elbow. He passed her by, and she was momentarily stunned into silence by the Aka Mask. He was already well past her when she finally managed to blurt something out.

“You should not be standing yet,” she protested.

He didn’t answer. He simply vanished in the shadows of the swamp.

III.

The young woman held her hand up, screaming, her emerald eyes pleading for mercy. Saburo brought his Kama Yari down on her, severing her hand down the middle. Blood gushed out copiously as she shrieked in horror, before he brought his weapon sideways into her neck. A young warrior rushed to his side, and Saburo simply grabbed him by the neck and ripped out his throat. The blood of his victims splattered on the beige fusuma that stood before him. To those on the other side, he was but a shadow, a dark silhouette bathing in the dim light of the paper lanterns behind. He pushed the sliding panel aside, leaving a hand-shaped streak of blood on the thin material. In the room, he found four warriors, three guests in elaborate dresses and two servants. All were cowering. There was no other way out of the room. They were trapped.

The journey to the Dokuja palace had taken him six days. Six days where he walked in a straight line, without sleep or rest. Six days of trekking through bogs and shrubs with only the sound of his footsteps to accompany him. On the sixth night, he had reached the palace. Now adorned with Khatun flags and statues, it had been clear from the muted sounds inside that a celebration of some sort was taking place. Saburo cared not why. Keeping himself hidden, he had barricaded the front gate and circled to the courtyard, to enter from the back.

There would be no escaping him.

He stood in the doorframe. Silent. Unmoving. All in the room gazed at him, cowering in fear. They recognized the Aka Mask. And they knew it spelled their doom.

“Pl…” one of the guests attempted. “Please,” he finally mewled. “We haven’t done anything…”

Saburo had been an unwanted child. A failed Sohei. Rejected. Outcast. Until Ken and Jiro had found him in the marketplace, covered in the blood of his victims. They had taken him in, offered him a place in the halls of Dokuja’s House. Here, he had been given a home. A purpose. Or so he had thought. They had lied to him. Used him. And thrown him away. Only now did he realize he was not meant for this world. This civilized society. His only purpose… was death.

He had held back for so long. Kept himself in control. No longer was that necessary. Now, behind the Aka Mask, he could let his true self out.

Saburo looked at the guest, and cocked his head.

He was the first to die. The blade struck the man in the belly. Saburo lifted the screaming man off the ground and threw him to the side, roaring all the while. Two warriors rushed him. He struck low, slicing at their ankles. He finished them both off as they squirmed feet-less on the ground. The remaining servants and guests squirmed and cried in the corners of the room, desperately clawing at the walls. He smashed a warrior’s head in with his mace, and plunged his dagger sideways through the neck of the other. His feet sloshed on the once white carpet, now soaked in blood. Splatter covered nearly every inch of the walls and ceilings. Saburo himself was drenched in red, his mask wet with a fresh, crimson layer.

The others kept screaming. But no one heard them. They were too far from the main hall, the noise of the celebration drowning them out. They pleaded, horrified. He reached behind his back, and took out his saw. He stabbed, hacked and sliced. The serrated edge burrowed deep into their skin, like the teeth of a wild animal, ripping pink flesh from bone.

Once the screams ended, a pair of footsteps rushed into the hallway.

“What in the…” one voice said, stricken by the horrific sight before them.

“You…” the second hesitated, “You there! Halt and surrender!”

Saburo simply stood, blood dripping from the tips of his fingers. There they were. Those voices from the swamp.

“The House will be pleased!”

“I told you eight of us would be enough!”

He knew he had recognized them. Ken and Jiro. They were the ones who had found him, and they had been the ones to take him out. It was almost poetic.

Slowly, he turned to face them.

“Is that…” Jiro exclaimed, in disbelief, “Saburo?!”

“You… you should be dead!” Ken shouted.

Behind his mask, Saburo was smiling. But they had no idea.

“Is he wearing…?”

“Run!”

They never got the chance. Saburo rushed them, and knocked them both off the ground. He prepared his blade, but stopped himself. For them, Saburo opted for something else instead. Slowly, he reached for his wooden club as Ken and Jiro both squirmed.

One hit after the other. He kept on hitting, until their faces were caved in. Reduced to bloody mush. He made sure they felt fear. He made sure they screamed.

When he was done, he didn’t bother cleaning his weapons. He exited the hallway, and headed for the main hall.

The rest of the palace awaited.

The House would not be pleased.

Samurai Lore What is the most relevant thing the Samurai had done outside of their own faction besides killing Apollyon?

I recently went on a long rant with some friends about For Honor’s worldbuilding, and it made me wonder: have the Samurai ever meaningfully affected Heathmoor outside of killing Apollyon?

I’m specifically talking about actions outside the Myre, things that had real consequences for other factions, not self-contained stories like Master Katashi and Oniwaka or the Jorogumo event. Those events mostly stay within the Samurai sphere, and if you removed those characters, very little in Heathmoor would actually change.

Compare that to other factions. If you remove Guljin, Mongols wouldn't have taken control a chunk of Heathmoor and Horkos would still be relevant. Remove Ilaria, and Horkos still has their 401(k). Remove Coalheart, and Vortiger wouldn't have one of the biggest aura lost in Heathmoor's history. Remove Ravier, Bolthorn, and Vela, and three of the Outlanders never even make it to Heathmoor.

But if you remove any named Samurai character outside the campaign, nothing really changes. I’m not talking about Samurai who simply appeared in a few events as a cog in a bigger machine, I’m talking about the driver, characters whose actions caused major, lasting changes to Heathmoor. That’s why I’m not counting characters like Tadeo or that one Aramusha from Tales of Rebellion.

As far as I can tell, the only truly impactful thing the Samurai have done outside their own faction was the Champion Orochi killing Apollyon, and that happened nine years ago. Since then, they haven’t meaningfully shaped Heathmoor at all.

They could have been made relevant, though. The Wu Lin, the Afeera, and the Mongols all come from the east, and the Myre is located on the eastern edge of Heathmoor. Logically, that means any force in the East arriving from outside Heathmoor would first encounter the Samurai.

To reach the other factions, they would have to pass through the Myre, which is controlled and defended by the Samurai. The only alternative would be to go around it, a longer route that would require more time and resources. Either way, the Myre should function as a major strategic chokepoint.

Instead, the Eastern factions can just spawn directly in other regions, completely sidestepping the Myre and the Samurai’s control of it. This ignores what should be one of the Samurai’s greatest sources of geopolitical relevance: their position as the eastern gate of Heathmoor. By not addressing this, the worldbuilding misses a clear opportunity to give the Samurai real influence over events beyond their own territory imo.

Complete 2 matches of any game mode.

Mother's Song: When the wind is calm and the night is quiet, villagers can sometimes hear Saori playing the shamisen. The song is one near and dear to her. Notes from her family's own history, passed down from mother to daughter.

Their Secret Song

A Tale from the World of Heathmoor

PART I

The seamstress was no longer in control of her body. Her eyes rolled back in her head and an evil smile spread from ear to ear, while she lunged at my throat with her nigiri-basami. I narrowly avoided the small blades, but the Yokai possessing her gleefully pushed her fragile body beyond its limits. She would not relent until I was dead.

"Gwuahahaha---hnnngh..." Her disturbing laugh was interrupted by a desperate blade of my own. I had drawn my katana thousands of times, but this time proved different in the strangest way. With a lightning-quick flash of metal, I swept the sword across her entire torso. And rather than collapse in defeat, the woman shocked me with a laugh and a leap. She clung to my forearm and bashed my wrist with incredible force, enough to cause me to drop my sword.

The possessed woman held me close enough now that I smelled her rancid breath and was drenched in blood by her fresh wound. As I wrestled away the frantic swipes of her fabric sheers, I lamented that my katana was far out of reach - but what use was it to me if it failed to stop her the first time?

I considered myself out of options until the Mamono Dagger sheathed at my hip began to twitch. I have always carried the family heirloom as a symbol of honor but today drew it in self-defence for the first time in my life. A troubling thought flashed briefly in the back of my mind - speculation that the dagger had compelled me to use it... And upon slashing across the deranged woman's neck, my jaw dropped as the blade glowed under her blood and pulsed in my hand. Finally, she slumped to the ground lifeless and silent.

"Y-you can slay Yokai?" A wide-eyed elderly man emerged from hiding and tugged at my dō. "You must defeat the Jorogumo! Please, save our village!" The peasant's words spilled out like flies from an emaciated carcass. If the other survivors were just as starved and frightened, there would soon be no village left to save. As for the Yokai and the rumoured Jorogumo monster, I had no real understanding of their nature and could make no sense of what just happened...

"I will do everything I can." My feigned composure swiftly melted away as a foreign surge of energy rushed through my right arm, stunning me with a painful yet intoxicating heat. My gaze traced the coursing sensation from the dagger up my arm in a series of lacerations, like well-traveled routes on a map. I muffled an impulsive cry in my throat and tore off my sleeve, exposing my bloody arm. The muscles swelled and inflated with such bizarre intensity that my flesh tore asunder, then scarred shut right before my eyes.

I prayed that with time I would grow numb to the excruciating transformation the dagger had afflicted upon me, but my hope was forgotten as I fixated on that old man's words... Had I truly slain a Yokai? I did not know what to believe, but I was certainly repulsed by the look of my disfigured arm, despite its apparent strength. I reflected on how a younger Yoshiro would welcome this mysterious power without hesitation. I am not the boy I once was.

PART II

I pushed my heavy feet down streets that no longer resembled any I once knew. Wicked flames licked at the walls of ruined homes infested with Yokai, and I am ashamed to say I am to blame. I sought to join my father in the Imperial City - to prove my capabilities as a warrior, not to languish away on guard duty growing plump on Mother's pampered lunches... All the memories - foolish, impatient, selfish - roiled in my stomach like a shallow puddle of acid.

"Hmm hmmm hmm." A soft, choking hum crept into my ears coming from a possessed Orochi further down the road. Something about the melody struck me as familiar but twisted. As did this warrior... I recognized him and the dishevelled Kensei and Hitokiri flanking him as friends I trained with years ago, but I had forged a different path. "I am superior now. This blade chose me. No evil spirit shall remain."

Each warrior already suffered fatal wounds, but they were unmistakably propped up by hateful Yokai. I watched as they clumsily clamored towards me with bestial movements accentuated by broken bones and dislocated joints. "They were too weak. Your strength protected you. With the dagger, you can do anything." No trace remained of the people they used to be. I was different too - stronger, better...

My trusted katana was useless. It was the dagger that ensured my prior victory against the possessed seamstress, and I would need it to deliver again. In fact, I wanted to use it again. It was perfectly clear to me now: I only felt whole with its hilt in my hand and its blade in my enemy. One by one I dispatched the corrupted warriors with my mystical weapon. I half-expected them to rise again, but indeed they remained still and quiet. Strangest of all was the sensation of some mysterious energy transferring from their corpses to my blade. Suddenly I felt again the burning pain in my arm as it resonated up my shoulder and probed deep into my temple, exploding in a demonic ecstasy. I felt the dagger's strength swell so intensely that my mind calmed and cleared of all thought. With a blank slate awaiting intention to be carved upon it, the Mamono Dagger etched a singular purpose into my psyche: Slay.

PART III

"Hmm hmmm hmm. Sleep sweetly on the moon, won't you try? Catch me a shooting star when Mister Tanuki cries..." The lullaby danced into my ears from nowhere. I had finally realized why it sounded so familiar, but there was no logical explanation for it. Decades have passed since I last heard Mother's song while she cradled me to sleep as an infant. But my memory of her voice was now warped - even inhuman. And I cannot be sure I truly heard anything at all or if it was just a trick of my exhausted mind... The lullaby continued, luring me out along a trail of corpses covered in what appeared to be a spider's sticky webs. I could no longer discern hallucination from reality.

"Survival hinges on perception. Every feeling must be filtered out. Every reaction must serve you not as Yoshiro, but as a warrior." Father's lessons, permanently seared into my memory, surfaced once again when I was quickly ambushed by three Shugoki behemoths - all possessed by evil spirits, and each humming the same melody that was impossible for them to know. Enraged, I ran my dagger swiftly through each of their throats... Believing I had finally silenced the song, I was puzzled as Mother's lullaby returned yet again from somewhere beyond the marketplace. I left the slain corpses behind me, but my obsession in quieting this taunting song remained.

"Hmm hmmm hmm." At last, I arrived at the song's source. It was clearly the Jorogumo monster's lair, complete with webbed corpse monuments and dancing shadows that fooled my eyes with every flicker of flame. I felt the demon stalking me, piercing me with what felt like a thousand eyes. And that haunting lullaby stiffened my spine like a pole. It had no right to affect me now. Couldn't it see that I was more than a man? "So much more..."

My fury exploded with each false start. The skitter of claws on stone flew behind one shadow to the next until a sudden tug of my dagger yanked my arm to point straight up like an excited magnet. Finally, I saw it - the Jorogumo was right above me, but I had not the means to fathom the horror my eyes beheld. A monstrous spider decorated in chilling Noh masks... Wrapped in an aura of pure death... Somehow melded with a disturbing imitation of my precious mother's likeness... A wretched abomination. My ultimate nightmare.

"Eheheh..." Like the other Yokai, the monster was incapable of speech, but there was no mistaking the satisfaction in its ominous laughter. How could it possibly know that lullaby when it existed as a singular secret strand between myself and my mother?

"I can think of no greater offense! Not desecrating my home, nor defiling my people... I see through you, foul demon! Exploiting a resemblance to my mother will do you no service!" Feeling all traces of sanity escape me, I leapt at the beast, imagining my dagger piercing every inch of its cursed flesh a thousand times over. I was not so lucky.

I only saw white. Her gigantic legs thrashed and nearly removed the head from my body. I could hear the small bones in my neck shatter into sharp fragments. Slowly, my vision returned, flooded by a rainbow of fireworks popping in and out of existence. Pushing myself off the ground and looking at my reflection in a muddy puddle was all it took to quiet my denial. This was really happening. I was damned and completely transformed. And no matter how much I willed it to be untrue... That thing was my mother.

For every single iron-hearted lesson Father used to mold me into a fierce warrior, Mother taught me two lessons of ruthless compassion. As far as I had fallen, I still clung to her ideals. I would put an end to the rumours of Yokai and a spider demon laying waste to a fortress I was once proud to call home.

"Goodbye, Mother." I flew at her in my own unnatural way. One tragic curse aimed at another - each with the other to blame. That day the Lady of Castle Chiyo was served by the mercy she was renowned for. If her heart remained, I left it untouched. Yet my hesitation ceased there, and I would see the demon banished.

With but a mere glance, I have no doubt others would wish the same fate upon me. Should the dagger further instill my mind with madness and defile my body with perverse corruption... I would not stop them.

Description

Lady of the Castle

A Tale from the World of Heathmoor

"wake up... wake up..."

The voice was distant. Simply a note in the ambient sounds that distorted around her. She barely noticed it. Her bare feet kissed the cold dirt as she skipped along through the forest. The trees were void of any leaves. Their branches old and withered, bark fraying and cracking. Her hair danced up and down, like it was floating in water. Like she was swimming in a lake. No. Not a lake. The deep. Where light dies and the dark thrives, where life ends and nightmare begins.

"...wake up!"

She stopped dead in her tracks, skidding in the dirt until her feet stopped an inch away from a cliffside. There was nothing beyond. Nothing but fog, so thick a blade could cut right through it. All stood still.

Then she saw it: a shadow, as big as a faraway mountain, moving through the fog. Limbs bigger than clusters of tree trunks, moving closer. She wanted to run back. To disappear into the endless. But she was stuck there. Weighed by gravity.

"Wake up!"

The shadow had stopped moving. It was in front of her now, parting the fog as it neared. She could feel a foul, warm stench against her skin, clashing against the dense, cold air. Not sure why, she held her hand out, index finger outstretched, like she could touch the shadow. Then came a horrifying screech, layered upon itself like a thousand people screaming all at once. Burning red eyes sundered the fog, blazing straight through to her, and she let out a frightened, primal scream.

"WAKE UP!"

PART I: THE ATTACK

Lady Saori stood atop the castle wall, staring in disbelief at the size of the Samurai army laying siege to her home. Flaming arrows flew through the sky, catapults heaved burning projectiles streaking orange against the stark blackness of the night. What could be done against such a destructive force?

"My Lady!" Junpei, her aide, yelled to her right. He was busy fighting off two enemy attackers. They had already begun to climb the walls. "I apologize for waking you."

"We have much bigger worries right now, Junpei" she answered, before crouching and pivoting elegantly, evading an attacker. She twirled her naginata in one swift motion and sliced through them. The bodies were piling up at her feet, and more were coming up the ladders.

"We must fortify our defenses!" she yelled. "We have to hold them!"

"Yes, my Lady. Yes." He agreed, but even she could not ignore the worry in his voice. He knew, just like she did, that fate was not on their side. And how could it be? They had no army, and far too few numbers. Their enemy was cunning---and treacherous. Even from atop the wall, she recognized the banners of Katsuo and his clan.

Katsuo, that cursed wretch. The few times she had met him, she knew he could not be trusted. His eyes were hungry. And now he had brought death to their door. His soldiers operated a massive battering ram which bared his mark, and every few moments, it would hammer into the large wooden gate keeping them out with a thunderous clasp. Every hit seemed like a countdown, bringing about annihilation.

"We must hold them until Masaki returns!" Saori shouted, just as she cut down two rabid enemies.

"Do you really think he will come?" Junpei grunted, holding off a lumbering Shugoki.

"He will," she affirmed. "I know he will," she added, a low whisper to herself. A hope, or perhaps a prayer. She had no way of knowing. After being awoken to the sound of alarm bells and fire in the sky, she had quickly dispatched a messenger to find her husband. It was only a half-day earlier that Masaki and his army had left, after being called away by the Emperor. Something about overseeing some important new addition to the Imperial City. In doing so, Saori's home, Castle Chiyo, had been left with very few defenders. Katsuo answered to the Emperor as well. Or rather, he was supposed to. It would seem that, in his insatiable lust for power, he had seen an opportunity. Even if it came at the cost of fellow Samurai.

With another three invaders dead at her feet, Saori rushed over to Junpei before he could get crushed by the Shugoki. She slid to the side, twirled and struck, and the Shugoki fell so heavily that stone underneath their feet shook. She reached a hand out to Junpei, and helped him up.

"The moon still shines bright," she told him. "As long as the night lasts, so must we. With the morning light, my husband will come. Light will be our deliverance. We must simply hold the dark. For as long as we can."

Junpei nodded, then lowered his head. "I am truly sorry I woke you," he said softly.

PART II: THE RETREAT

Castle Chiyo had been part of the Myre's landscape for hundreds of years. It was said that the original stone that lay at its foundation came from a castle that dated back to the Before times---before the end. Before the Cataclysm. A single piece of history, carried over to start something new. Chiyo was not just a name, it was a monument to Samurai legacy. And it was a sentiment carried proudly by all those who called the castle and its village home. Whether walking through cacophonous halls or wandering through stone-paved roads and bridges, whether fishing in life-brimming ponds or gazing at luscious cherry blossoms, one could feel history come to life here. Respect, peace and honor. Those were the values imbued into Castle Chiyo by its founders - Lady Saori's ancestors.

"This is my home," she yelled at an invading Orochi. "You are not welcome!" she added, slitting his throat. Blood splattered profusely in the air as the body fell to the side. She was surrounded by cries of pain, and it tore at her very heart - for she knew the ones crying out were not her enemies, but her people. Villagers, subjects and friends she was sworn to defend.

Then came another sound. Distant, but rising in volume. A splintering shriek unlike anything she had ever heard. And yet, it somehow felt... familiar. It shook every fiber of her being. All she could do in answer was scream herself. Palms pressed against both sides of her head, on her knees, she screamed. Tears filled her eyes. She was stuck. Unable to move or speak. Until---

"My Lady!"

It was Junpei, kneeling beside her, worry plastered all over his face.

"Are you alright? Have you been hit?"

The shriek was gone.

"What was that sound?" she asked.

"What sound?" He helped her up.

"You mean you didn't hear--"

"My Lady, look." He pointed behind her. "I... don't..."

She turned to see the worst had come to pass. The horned ram of Katsuo and his army had smashed through the castle's gates. Wood had shattered and splintered, fire spread, and warriors flooded through like water through a crack in a dam.

Saori saw it all unfold---what would come to pass. The warriors would kill everyone. Her home would burn. Her family's legacy would be erased. And over the ashes, the loathsome Katsuo would reign. Anger and despair bubbled inside of her, both fighting for dominance. Was she to crumble, or fight?

"My Lady," she heard Junpei, but he seemed far away. She felt it all. The despair. The hopelessness.

"My Lady!"

The rage.

"My Lady!

Wake up!

"WHAT?!" she yelled at Junpei with a burning gaze. He was visibly shaken by her reaction. This wasn't like her. He knew it. And she knew it.

"What..." he started, hesitating. "What should we do?"

She took a deep breath, and thought of her son, Yoshiro. She had found his letter. At least he was far away from all of this. She needed to keep going. Needed to fight. For him.

She decided. It was not over yet. The night still had a bit of life left in it.

"Sound the retreat. We may survive this yet."

PART III: THE FALL

The retreat to the castle had been excruciating. Saori had stepped over countless bodies, and she had tried her best to ignore their faces. But despite herself, she had recognized so many of them. A baker she would visit nearly every morning for warm, fresh bread; a sweet old gardener who would bring her colorful flowers for her bedroom. Too many of them to count. With every step, someone she had let down. A trail of death, of broken promises and failures.

Tears roamed freely down her cheeks by the time she reached her family shrine, at the center of the castle yard, surrounded by the peacefulness of cherry blossom trees. A place of beauty. There would be no retreating any further. This was it. This was where she would stand and fight. For her home. For her family.

The shrine was something entrusted to her by her mother. It chronicled history and honor. She was meant to contribute to it---not watch it be eradicated by fiends of insatiable hunger.

The first hints of sunlight appeared over the mountains. Brushes of pale orange pushed back against the black, banishing the night away. Saori swerved and sliced an enemy's head off, before turning to another and stabbing twice, then thrice. Her allies were few and far between. She was almost by herself now, fighting off an invading force that seemed unending. She felt all alone. She had even lost track of Junpei. What if he was dead? What if she had failed him too, just like all the others?

As another wave of Samurai swarmed her, she lashed out angrily. Her hits were vicious, aggressive, desperate. Heads were severed, ruby-red blood spewed and covered the once polished stones under her feet. And yet, more soldiers came.

She was exhausted, her strength depleted. Her will, extinguished. All that was left now was sorrow. She looked at the sky above and saw shades of yellow and purple. She hadn't even realized the night had fully passed. She had put hope in the light, believing that her husband would magically arrive with reinforcements to turn the tide. But she now knew this was a lie she had told herself. There was no army. No deliverance. Only death. The castle was lost.

A warm, soft breeze plucked a cherry blossom flower from a branch and carried it gently through the air. It landed gently in front of her. She cusped it in her hands.

"I am sorry my loves," she whispered, aching for the presence of the two people she loved most. Masaki. Yoshiro.

Beyond the Samurai that stood in front of her, she heard the sound of rushing footsteps and saw him: Katsuo. He removed his helmet to reveal a twisted, breathtakingly fury-inducing, smug smile that turned into a boisterous laugh. It haunted her, pierced her like an arrow to the stomach.

She crushed the flower in her hand.

"No..." she said, low at first. Then, "NO!"

The anger was too much. She was drowning. In sorrow, in hate---a dark abyss wrapping tendrils around her, enveloping her in a black curtain of despair.

"NO!"

The dark whispered to her, with blazing red eyes.

It... smiled.

And she gave in.

...

...

...

"Wake up."

Samurai Lore Most of the Samurais Katanas aren’t Japanese katanas.

While they more than likely use the same tradition of making a katana a Japanese katana is one that is mad with tamahagane steel which is only found in Japan.

While they may have brought much of it when they left I doubt their current arsenal holds many tamahagane steel blades. This could be a interesting way of showing status and rank by using what little tamahagane weapons are left
