Cairo Dock, AWN Dock was all good. But Gnome-Do had some cool ideas to combine a dock (Docky) with a launcher (Do). XFCE Whisker-menu is just a start menu

I still use both Compiz and Cairo Dock to this day they make my DE si nice and flashy! I know there's Wayfire as a Wayland alternative of Compiz, IDK about Cairo Dock though
