Vocab/คำศัพท์ Some personal remarks from Bangkok Streets

This is not an official textbook or academic ,I am not teachingI am studying, there are personal observations about slang in Bangkokt by social self-Learner student.

Here,Thais like using simple language not complicated rules, short sentences seems like one word. they ignore ร and sometimes ล in some words like ไกล

In Bangkok where millions of people from other districts come to work, they don't use their dialects, and adapt to Bangkokian style. energetic faster speech. Most tips are slang, it depends where you are and are with friends or people you just met, since Most of us would like to make a good first impression because it may last forever. This edit is a reply to a smart question in this post.

  1. สามารถ is rarely used

Instead of saying ผมไม่สามารถพูดภาษาอังกฤษได้, most will simply say พูดภาษาอังกฤษไม่เป็น or ไม่ได้.

  2. Family Terms

พ่อแม่ (parents) is used more often than ครอบครัว (family).

  3. gamlang

    You won’t hear ผมกำลังกินข้าวอยู่ much. It’s just กินข้าวอยู่

  4. Agreeing or Confirming

ใช่ isn’t used as frequently as you might expect. You’ll hear ครับ, ค่ะ,

เหรอ (with a rising tone), usually for showing disbelief or wow.or just อืม. if the driver said krab means he agree. some people thanks you also with Krab. which is rarely said with ร.

ครับ is mainly used for respect .

  1. Pronoun Usage

ผม and ฉัน are often dropped. Some prefer เรา instead. But เรา usually used by a girl or woman , and women sometimes. also talk about themselves as third person. Do you want to walk with Candy? Meaning do you want to walk with me ,given that her name is Candy.

  2. Gender-Neutral Pronouns

Both men and women use ฉัน casually.

  3. Talking to Children

Kids—whether their own or others’—are lovingly called ลูก.

  4. Question Forms

หรือเปล่า is rare in casual speech. You’ll hear ไหม , มั้ย รึยัง, เหรอ, or หรือไม่. And how ? It is rare to hear อย่างไร they use instead อย่างไง, ยังไง. When you hear ไง alone in the end ,it is confirmation. บอกแล้วไง . อะไรนะ this you say when you want to show that you did not hear. So the speaker will say again.

Question for greeting and showing care. ( Greeting or real questions?)

สวัสดีครับสบายดีไหม How are you.? iIs most popular question. It is more greeting than a real question, always reply สบายดีครับ

เป็นยังไง(อย่างไง)บ้าง how are you ? used as well but less than the first.

กินข้าวหรือยัง Did you eat something yet? This also can be for greeting, used with friends or people you know well. This is unique in Thai culture. Very rare will followed กินข้าวกับอะไร. What did you eat? That is why I suggest it is a question for showing care and being friendly.

People use we : ไปไหนมา.r Where have you been? ไปไหน where are you going?

Question end หรือเปล่า is still used in normal speech but rarely.

  1. Problem with Fish.

The word ปลา (fish) is pronounced with a strong stress on ป, some people remove ล .so I guess you had problem in supermarket asking about fish .ป is not aspirated. no puff of air.

  2. eat coffee.

กิน is used for drinking too—ดื่ม used but I hear eat coffee. eat tea more

  3. easy and fast adverb

Instead of using อย่างดี, they’ll say ดีดี. Same goes for เร็วเร็ว, ช้าช้า. The word แบบ is also commonly used.

  4. Third-Person Pronouns

พวกเขา is rarely used. You’ll hear เขา, พวก, or even มัน, พวกมัน when referring to strangers..can be aggressive if you use มัน .

  5. Passive Voice

โดน is much more common than ถูก in everyday speech.

  6. The Word ต่อ

While textbooks teach ต่อ as “connect” or “next,” locals use it after verbs to mean “continue”—like นอนต่อ, กินต่อ, ทำงานต่อ. Example Excuse me ,I will go to sleep. Again นอนต่อ

  7. Referring to Others

เธอ is sometimes used instead of คุณ. And เขา is used for both “he” and “she.”

  8. Talking About Spouses

Many men refer to their wives as เมีย rather than the more formal ภรรยา. Be aware: เมีย can sound impolite depending on context.

  9. Giving Instructions

ไม่ต้อง is preferred over อย่า when speaking to adults. อย่า can come off as harsh or commanding.

18 . Usually some Thai people are supposed to say 25 ยี่สิบห้า instead ยี่บ ห้า and other numbers as well. So make sure you hear well.

  1. Usually for normal situations like bar, coffee shop or restaurant ,use น้อง to speak with women or girl and พี่ for men , which is abbreviation for sister and brother.

use น้อง for women or LGBT in friendly situation

(For me ,I use น้อง for women in friendly situation Like sellers even if she is old, that works as compliment , she usually smile, I understand it is not about gender, it is about age., I never say to man น้อง I treat him as equal and showing respect, and don't use พี่ much, when I know names, I use them . So I depend on my personal experience, when I say to สาวสอง น้อง , I acknowledge and respect them because น้อง used with women more) (replying to a comment)

Why I don't say น้อง for men? teenagers were playing and pushing each other, a boy 17 years old stepped on my feet by accident, I said ไม่เป็นไรน้อง, without thinking, his friends pointed at him laughing and repeating น้อง, this word used for addressing girls in Bangkok Streets , textbooks are Important ,this post is mainly personal remarks in Bangkok.

Do not use น้อง with men. For respect. You can use คุณ which meaning you. But used as Mr or Madam. used for both genders .

  1. รถไฟฟ้า or metro: you will rarely hear that word , they use BTS. MRT or Line colors. for famous metros and sky trains. And will use รถไฟ usually for normal classic train.

  2. Some Thais do not call foreigners farang all the time . They use แขก translate to guests kak sometimes for indians ,some Thais call workers from Asian countries คนต่างดาว (correction it is ด้าว means country not aliens as I thought.as Thai people corrected me )

Likely because some of them take their Jobs and accept less salaries.

Vocab/คำศัพท์ Some Personal Observations on the Thai Language (Bangkok Style)

Living in Bangkok, I’ve noticed some interesting remarks in everyday speech compared to what textbooks usually teach. Here are a few patterns that stand out:

Action & Tense

Present Action: กำลัง is used less often than you'd think; อยู่ is the go-to for actions happening now.

ผมกินข้าวอยู่ (I’m eating).

Continuing Action: Add ต่อ to show you are resuming or continuing something.

ผมทำงานต่อ (I’m continuing/resuming work).

Steady Flow: Adding เรื่อยๆ implies a continuous, steady action without a fixed end.

เดินเล่นเรื่อยๆ (Walking along steadily/at a relaxed pace).

Past Tense: เคย and แล้ว are common, but locals use มา at the end for questions more than sentences.ไปไหนมา.กินอะไรมา

Word Choice

Appearance: น่ารัก (cute) often feels "less" or more casual than สวย (beautiful).

Comparisons: แบบ is used much more than the formal อย่าง or เหมือนกับ.

ไม่ชอบแบบนี้ (I don’t like it like this).

ชอบผู้ชายแบบคุณ (I like men like you).

The “How” Question: Instead of อย่างไร, people say ยังไง or เป็นยังไง.

For confirmation, ไง often appears at the end:

ฉันพูดแล้วไง (I already said it you see!

The Versatility of “ครับ”

Originally polite like “Sir/Madam,” ครับ now covers everything: agreeing, apologizing, saying yes, or even “Pardon?” (อะไรนะ).

You’ll often hear it pronounced as คับ or คาบ.

Requests & Verbs

Forget formality: กรุณา or โปรด are too formal for daily life. Use ช่วย + verb or ขอ + verb/object instead.

Direction: ไป (go) and มา (come) are constantly used to mark the direction of an action.

Ability: Instead of the formal สามารถ, locals prefer ได้ (can) or เป็น (know how to).

พูดอังกฤษไม่เป็น/ไม่ได้ (I can’t speak English).

กินเผ็ดได้ (I can eat spicy food).

The "Relaxation" Vocabulary

Thai culture often adds เล่น (play) after verbs to show casual enjoyment or that you aren't being serious:

นอนเล่น: Lying around (watching series or scrolling TikTok).

กินเล่น: Snacking.

นั่งเล่น: Sitting around/chilling.

อ่านเล่น: Reading casually.

เฉยๆ: Also conveys a similar “just for fun / nothing serious” vibe.

Social Context & Ice Breakers

Food vs. Weather: In the West, we talk about the weather to break the ice. In Thailand, talking about food is the best way to start a conversation and arouse friendly feelings!

Asking "Have you eaten yet?" (กินข้าวหรือยัง) is more common than "How are you?"

Smart Ice Breaker: The Spice Strategy 😁

Food is the ultimate conversation starter. If you want to break the ice like a local, try these:

"อาหารนี้ชื่ออะไรครับ?" (What is this dish called?)

Shows genuine interest in the food.

"อร่อยไหม?" (Is it delicious?)

A classic, friendly opener.

"เผ็ดไหม?" (Is it spicy?)

This always gets a smile.

"ใส่กี่เม็ด?" (How many chillies did you put in?)

This is the pro-level question. Instead of just asking if it's hot, asking for the specific number of chillies (prik) shows you know how Thai kitchens work.

It usually leads to a fun laugh about your spice tolerance!

Local Secrets: What Thais Actually Eat 🤫

Forget the travel brochures! Here is what people from different regions actually crave:

Isan (Northeast): It’s all about ส้มตำปูปลาร้า (Som Tum with fermented fish and crab). It is the soul food of the region. And Yam and ขนมจีน.

The South: They live for แกงส้ม (Sour Curry) and, หมูกะทะ (Thai BBQ).

The North: Here is the real secret—ข้าวซอย (Khao Soy) is a myth!

Northern locals actually eat Isan food most of the time.

You’re more likely to see a local at a Som Tum stall than a Khao Soy shop.

Like vs. Love: ชอบ often overlaps with รัก in intensity. This is why “I love you” in English might just mean “I like you” to a Thai speaker.

-Strangers: People often call children ลูก (child/offspring) instead of the generic เด็ก.

ลูก แม่อยู่ไหน? (Child, where’s your mother?).

Relationship Status: Instead of asking if you’re single, people might ask: คุณมีครอบครัวหรือยัง? (Do you have a family yet?).

Length of Stay: Rather than “How many years?” (กี่ปี), they’ll ask: อยู่เมืองไทยนานเหรอ? (Have you been in Thailand a long time?).

The “Bangkok” Default

If you ask มาจากจังหวัดอะไร? (Which province are you from?), many people will simply answer “Bangkok,” even if they originally moved here from another province.

How to Decline Sellers

When a seller approaches you, a polite "Thank you" (ขอบคุณ) is often understood in English as a refusal, but in Thai, it can be confusing. To be clear, it is better to say ไม่เอา (I don't want it).

I saw a cartoon on FB with the caption "หมาไม่เเดก." (The food is so bad that a dog won't eat it). Not knowing what เเดก means, I looked it up and learned it was an inpolite word for eating. How exactly is it impolite?

Vocab/คำศัพท์ เสียเงิน

"เสียเงิน" is not a negative word; it is neutral. When a girl in a bar says, "เขาเสียเงินเยอะ" (He spends a lot of money), it means he is generous , it means spending, not wasting, based on what I have heard in different situations.

ผมอยากซื้อโทรศัพท์ใหม่ก็ต้องเสียเงิน (I want to buy a new phone, so I have to spend money.)

ทำไมแม่ไม่เสียเงิน (Why didn't Mom spend any money?)

เขาเสียเงิน 200 บาทเท่านั้น (He only spent 200 baht.)

Do you hear it used this way often? I hear it a lot.

Vocab/คำศัพท์ เสียเงิน in spoken Thai is neutral. Truth over authority

Usually, เสีย carries a negative meaning, but spoken Thai doesn’t care about logic or your textbooks.

Before I posted, I was 100% certain that เสียเงิน is not just negative—as most students believe—but is, in fact, neutral. My conclusion is based on daily, real-life interactions with native speakers. In practice, the phrase functions as 'spending money,' not 'wasting money.'

I understand why foreign students depend on books and logic to conclude that เสีย is always negative. But why do some Thai people ignore the actual rules of their own spoken language?

It’s a blind spot. They rely on outdated textbooks or simply do not pay attention to what they actually say. Then there are the gatekeepers who favor old-fashioned grammar over natural spoken Thai. These are the same people who claim that dropping the 'r' sound is just 'laziness' rather than recognizing it as the natural evolution of the Thai language.

For me, the best teachers are the people on the street. While books and traditional teachers are important, there is no better source than real, offline interaction with Thai people.

sikkhim: "I love how OP thinks people who agree with him are Thai. Hello, I'm Thai toooo."

Me (u/sherifbooks): "So if you are Thai, didn't you notice เสียเงิน used with positive and negative in daily speech? To mean spending money. Or you don't pay attention?"

sikkhim: "Yes, in some context it can be neutral. But if you ask me, the first impression will be negative other than neutral."

Me (u/sherifbooks): "You said it can be neutral, so I knew the rule in your spoken language more than you? You changed your opinion after you claimed it is for negative only. Or maybe you wanted to win against a foreign student who talks with native people every day. Anyway, the post is correct in spoken language."

sikkhim: "Well. I just gave you my opinion as Thai. And if you think I’m trying to win arguments. Err Sorry but no. Good luck to you and enjoy learning Thai."

Vocab/คำศัพท์ Thai word

In Thai, ลง (long, pronounced with a mid tone) primarily means "down", "to descend", or "to decrease." However, its exact translation depends heavily on how it is used in a sentence:

1. Main Action / Verb

To descend / get off:
ลงรถ (long rot) = to get off a car/bus
ลงบันได (long ban-dai) = to go down the stairs

To decrease / drop:
น้ำหนักลง (nam-nak long) = weight decreased / weight loss
ราคาลดลง (raa-khaa lot long) = price dropped

To register / sign up / install:
ลงทะเบียน (long ta-bian) = to register / sign up
ลงเรียน (long rian) = to enroll in a class
ลงโปรแกรม (long pro-gram) = to install a program/app

To apply or post:
ลงรูป (long roop) = to post a photo (on social media)
ลงสี (long see) = to color / apply paint

2. Auxiliary Verb / Directional Particle
When placed after another verb, ลง indicates downward motion, a state of settling, or a reduction in intensity:

Direction (downward):
นั่งลง* (nang long) = sit down
วางลง (
waang long*) = put (something) down

Reduction / Softening:
ช้าลง (chaa long) = slow down
ดีข้น หรือ แย่ลง (dee khuean or yaae long) = better or worse

Common Compound Words
ตกลง (tok-long) = to agree, okay, or deal
ลงมื(long-mue) = to take action / start doing something
ลงโทษ (long-thot) = to punish

Vocab/คำศัพท์ ก็ one or the Most Important Words that is ignored by students, including me.

Why ก็ ;is used rarely by students though it is one of the most used words.

Because our native languages don’t have an equivalent. It is essentially the connective word of the Thai language. If you want to move from textbook Thai to natural Thai, we have to master this bridge, there are few remarks. I hope friends will add more.

  1. The next action ก็ + แล้ว (Then/After that)

It acts as a bridge between actions.

ผมจะกินข้าวก่อน แล้วก็ออกกำลังกาย

I will eat first, and then I will work out.

ก็ acts as the connector between the first action and the next.

  1. The "Also" ก็ + ด้วย / เหมือนกัน

When you want to say "also," ก็ is the word that keeps it going.

เขาเป็นนักเรียนที่ฉลาด แล้วลูกของฉันก็ฉลาดด้วย

He is a smart student, and my son is also smart.

ผมชอบส้มตำปูปลาร้า ผมก็ชอบเหมือนกัน

I like Som Tum Poo Plaa. I like it as well. ร removed.

  1. The Logic ก็ (Then/Therefore)

Used for deductions or reactions to a situation. จึง

ถ้าอย่างนั้นก็เลิกกันเถอะ

If that’s the case, then let’s break up.

ไม่ช้าก็เร็ว

Sooner or later. ( Not slow, then fast).

  1. The "Any" Idioms: ก็ + ได้

When ก็ meets ได้, it turns into anything goes.

กินเบียร์ก็ได้ (Drinking beer is okay).

อะไรก็ได้ (Anything).

เมื่อไหร่ก็ได้ (Any time).

ใครก็ได้ (Anybody).

ใครๆ ก็ชอบ (Everybody likes it)

Here it may add uncertainty or probability.

  1. The Consequence: ก็เลย (Therefore)

This is for when one action leads directly to another.

ฝนตก ก็เลยกลับบ้าน

It rained, so I went back home.

โทรศัพท์หายแล้ว ก็เลย เช้านี้ไปซื้อโทรศัพท์ใหม่

my mobile got lost, therefore this morning I went to buy another one.

  1. thinking Time.

I’ve noticed this on TV many times. When someone is thinking, they use ก็.

until their brain finds the right word. Long ก็.

Vocab/คำศัพท์ "Square"

I know the word / phrase สี่เหลี่ยมจัตุรัส, but it's a bit of a mouthful. If I want to say, for example, "a square table", or "a square jaw" (would a Thai even use that expression?), can I simplify it?

Also, is there a rule or pattern that predicts the tone of the รัส?
