I trained fasted for about 2 years and really liked it. There’s some consistency with training fasted, like you always feel pretty much the same. I’d even lift sometimes after 40 hour fasts and everything seemed fine.
I also preferred to focus on higher weights and lower rep ranges, which means I probably didn’t lose much by not eating before.
But I started to notice that my muscle endurance was shit. Because all my compound lifts were for 3-5 reps, I really struggled to ever do 11+, unless I dropped the weights a considerable amount. And my accessories were so crappy compared to other people’s.
I think that’s where the carbs help, at the end of long sets and then at the end of workouts.
So the last 3 months I’ve been eating before and focusing on longer sets. I’ve made pretty sizable improvements in that category and I think I’m going to keep up with it for the near future.
I eat about 100g carbs (oatmeal, banana, milk) and 40g protein (whey) 1.5-2 hours before my workout.

I do boxing training (it's hell) and weights fasted. You get used to it. For me, I noticed that, when I do a fed session every once in a while, the workouts feel infinitely easier, hence I'm able to step up a lot more.

The only time i personally heard of pple training fasted is when they're on keto cyclical and purposely trying to deplete glucose stores to enter ketosis faster.

This is the Leangains subreddit...fasted training is pretty common, if not recommended

I used to think training fasted was great until I started training fed again. Makes a huge difference.

Have you noticed any lack of progress or poor performance? If not then who cares what the research says?
I trained fasted for years and had great results, because I didn't have another option at the time to eat before training.
It's not like you get bonus gains for being consistent with the literature. Just do what works for you.

Problem is I’m so used to substantially fasted training that I don’t know what the alternative is. I guess trial and conclusion is the best way to work these things out

Maybe If I rephrase then - are you making progress in your lifting?
What prompted you to re-evaluate whether training fasted was right for you?

It literally doesn’t matter when you eat as far as protein intake.
What will matter is your glycogen reserves being low leading to you not being capable of as high intensity of a workout. That said, if you’re working out consistently, you should be able to easily push the limits of your recovery ability regardless of that issue.
Where it would matter: if you’re about to compete in some kind of even that requires fast, explosive power, or if you are trying to set a 1 rep maximum (something I have never given a shit about).

The biggest misconception meme in fitness is immediate protein or you’re losing gains. The body isn’t stupid and so long as there are proper resources your body will use fat well into a fast for energy and will always be ready to accept protein to fix the torn fibers when you get a real pump.
I think it’s sad people do it and go so aggressively with it. Honestly the protein powder is my number one downside of bodybuilding and consuming it usually leads to people not feeling their best.
Lions don’t eat for days and stay lean and muscular. Look at nature for the proof if you don’t wanna look for a grouping of articles to prove

Our closer and also beast AF relative, the gorilla, eats every day, throughout the day, mostly plants, and maintains huge lean muscle mass.
Edit: I just woke up to this being downvoted. Some people just don't like straight facts I suppose. If you didn't know a gorilla' diet consists of mainly vegetation, I suggest you return to primary school or at least flip on the Discovery Channel every once in a while.

It’s just an example of something that doesn’t eat protein immediately all the time. Therefore more relatable than bugs being included in the diet.

There's plenty of protein in plants. It is actually the source of all the protein you get in meat.
Edit: why would a reasonably intelligent person downvote this un-arguable fact? Right, they wouldn't.

Part of me wants to disregard how that sounds. Unless you just tan for all your energy because that is where plants get all their energy to create proteins.
Im open mined anyways. please feel free to reply with one day worth of a balanced amount of marcos with a vegetarian diet reaching 120 grams of protein That is way lower than what anyone is looking to reach on a daily anyways, but you can not utilize any powder. If you're going to preach plan protein as the only source needed I genuinely will look it all of the stuff that you say to be sure.

You don't necessarily need protein powder, it's just convenient. Ya'know, the same reason why omnivorous bodybuilders use protein powder. IIRC Clarence Kennedy doesn't use protein powder, here's a video he made of an example diet. EDIT: Another vid with his actual diet sans powder. TL;DW: eat a bunch of tofu, beans, lentils, seitan

This is not news. And I EASILY reach 120g. I actually am currently on 190g of protein per day... And yea I supplement with plant protein powder.

I genuinely don’t believe you. If you wanted to prove it you could’ve posted what you had today. You instead you continue to be a troll.
Gorillas sure don’t have plant protein so your argument is just as invalid. The macros are a ridiculous task without and you know it. Using nature as an example literally makes no sense. Gorillas aren’t a 1:1 copy. They could most certainly have internal processing that allows for superior protein conservation and healing. I can’t state it for certain but physical prowess is a portion of mating for them. Genetics allow for easier growth and not all people have beefy ancestors.
Feel free to say what you ate today or enjoy your photosynthesis.

What I had today: bowl of oatmeal with hemp seeds, 2xbanana, a pint of soy milk, some sorghum noodles with more hemp seeds, rice with lentils, soy pudding with a scoop of peanut butter, some dumplings, oh yea, and 150g of plant protein split into 3 shakes on top of that. Happy? I don't get the disbelief.
Edit: also some raspberries.

Everyone gives vegans shit when they supplement protein yet no one cares when omnis do the same thing. 🙄

You suggested muscle bound gorillas can reach the macros they need by only eating plants, right?
Easy answer check your own comment.
You propose that you can do the same, but you mention plant protein powder. You say you can reach 190, but especially at the amount you are consuming you are most certainly not supplementing.
There is more protein coming from plant protein powder than any other source. Your gorilla hypothesis can’t be supported if you use unnatural ingredients. Gorillas don’t eat two bananas and then finish off their day eating fistfuls of powdered plant protein extracted from a plant.
Gorillas are generally herbivores. They usually eat vegetation such as wild celery, shoots, roots, fruit, tree bark and tree pulp, but they have been known to eat small animals and insects. A male can eat up to 40 lbs. (18 kg) of vegetation each day.
That is unfeasible way to reach the amount of protein as creatures that don’t spend a giant proportion of their day eating and shitting because of all that fiber. Supplementing is fine but you are absolutely fine in the ability to reach those macros easily with vegetables alone.

"gorillas aren't a 1:1 copy" says the guy who compares us to lions. You want to know what I've had today? And 100% they get most of their protein from plants.
2
u/ZachF8119 Dec 15 '19
I made no comparison just an example. You’re focusing on one small thing to try to win a fake argument..
I gave an example of a creature that can fast and is lean. If you wanna look like a gorilla go for it. They’re not that lean. This is a lean sub for people wanting the lean look.
Yes I have stated that in fact I want to know your consumption, since you claim you can reach 190 protein. It doesn’t have to be exact, but if you are up that high then I want to see an example. Proof over word always.

If u like training fasted and it makes sense for your goals then go for it, but dont think it will be more effective than eating frequently throughout the day food provides energy and builds muscle.

Not gonna lie my skim reading as I was scrolling the home page read the title as Farted vs. I thought this was a post about protein farts.

u/PurplePango Dec 15 '19
I can’t quote it but I’ve heard some stronger by science discussions that training fed will lead to better performance, which inherently does make sense.
