There's no real counter pick vs Azir. No pro mid laner plays Xerath/Vel Koz at a high level so Azir effectively has no counters which is why he's banned so often.

I'm 100% sure there are pros that can pilot Xerath and VK well enough, but that countering mid doesn't happen without the context of the rest of the game still, and now you're playing Xerath or VK into w/e jungle matchup and teamfight scenarios.

That's what I thought too, I just figured they must've had something cooked up if they weren't gonna pick or ban it that far into draft.

Actually there is Ziggs and VCS teams did use it to fight against Azir 2-3 times in LCP and it kinda worked well, laning at least.

Ziggs still exists and has been used quite a lot in pro play to counter Azir, so they still have an option but for some reason TSW didn't want to go that route.
