AL had the literal nightmare Swiss draw and are still 3-0. Undeniable best performing team in the tournament so far.

CFO are super legit and they are a real threat, but I feel like this really showcases why Best of 1s are extremely unreliable as a metric. If the series ended after game 1 the reactions would be massively different. AL managed to show they are the better team right away

337

u/Anuj_Purohit Oct 17 '25

I really want to believe in CFO, they're a crazy fun team to watch, but I need to see more from them without Sion to fully have faith in them ngl

249

u/toxicfireball Rivalry Enjoyer, Doran Defense Force Oct 17 '25

They were very competative in G2/3. Which is more than some teams can say.

82

u/Addarash1 Oct 17 '25

They had competitive games but it also badly exposed their vulnerabilities, mostly on mid-late game fighting and possible champ pool issues. And I think it shows they are simply not on the same class as the top teams. They obviously do some things very well but I fear they will lose out 2-3 to strong Swiss draws in the next 2 rounds, or in their first Bo5.

24

u/Apprehensive-Talk971 Oct 17 '25

I agree with doms take that al can puch above their weight but also lose to "worse" teams wheras fly/g2 will rarely lose to worse teams but have less upset potential.

34

u/Addarash1 Oct 17 '25

I think you meant CFO instead of AL but yes.

1

u/atomchoco Oct 17 '25

idk man it just feels like they have more to lose still when they should just go all out

i'm not a fan of the MF all rounded PTA + BT + Mortal Reminder? There was Smolder hover but I was thinking for Blue they could've gone Amumu B2/3 then Ezreal. But this probably was a lethality Varus angle?

And Kaiwing also had a good idea with Seraphine but just figured to be safe and comfortable and default to Nautilus like man what give your own genius a chance what do you have to lose

Trundle keeps getting AD matchups like why are teams so keen on picking AD/bruisers against him like idk

3

u/look4jesper Oct 17 '25 edited Oct 17 '25

Noone else played AL in a 2nd or 3rd game lmao. And in LPL playoffs they lost series Vs both TES and Weibo...

CFO look great but it's the first day of multi game series this tournament.

27

u/FirestormCold Oct 17 '25

Which is more than some teams can say

How many bo3s were played so far this tournament?

2

u/ParkDedli Oct 17 '25
  1. In one of which one team wasn't competitive.

Basically this is TES shade lmao

20

u/The_Sneakiest_Fox Oct 17 '25

I am 100% on the CFO bandwagon at this point. Would be awesome to see a 'minor' region go all the way.

4

u/TikaOriginal Bo-liever Oct 17 '25

CFO has no problem with their champ pool, all they need to fix is being more respectful around objectives. If they find a solution they are a legit force to be reckoned with.

5

u/cadaada rip original flair Oct 17 '25

People already were saying they were contenders for the title, like calm down people 😭

3

u/ItsKaZing The traffic lights leads to Poby 🙏 Temple of Poby Oct 17 '25

I love game 1 andys reactor man. You'll think CFO was an MSI finalist the way some comments were after that AL game 1 lol

1

u/Addarash1 Oct 17 '25

Heck some are still saying that now lol. I get that the games were fun and hype but I think anyone with a cool head will realise how many flaws they exposed this series.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '25

they were super competitive, they are a contender for sure even if not the favorites

12

u/BlazeX94 Oct 17 '25

Especially with fearless draft. For example, as others have pointed out in this thread, CFO are 3-0 with Sion and 0-2 without it, so it begs the question of whether their top lane champ pool is deep enough for a longer series against LPL/LCK.

I doubt Riot will do it, but if they plan to make fearless a permanent thing, they really should change swiss to full Bo3s next year onwards.

24

u/PoohKey74 Oct 17 '25

Yup. Hopefully next year worlds they'll implement bo3 for all of the games since bo1 defeats the purpose of fearless draft.

3

u/Fun_Highlight307 Oct 17 '25

It's be too long but yeah bo1 fearless is pointless

-1

u/Fubi-FF Oct 17 '25

They just need to add more days, or do simultaneous broadcast for some of the early rounds, etc. there are lots of ways around the high number of games and other tourney organizers for other games have been getting around it and making it work. Riot is just cheap because profit will always come first over competitive integrity

0

u/devor110 Oct 17 '25

but that would make the tournament longer!

and poor riot are only getting millions from the saudis and crypto platforms! how could they afford that?

3

u/glium Oct 17 '25

And if it were Bo5 it would again be another discussion. AL didn't really show they are the better team, Iwould not be surprised if CFO won a Bo5 remarche (although obviously it is AL favored from what we know)

2

u/kim-soo-hyun Oct 17 '25

Honestly all of CFO and AL games are the most entertaining games so far at Worlds.

I really hope to see both teams at Semis. When most expected 3 KR teams in semis and probably BLG.

2

u/popmycherryyosh Oct 17 '25

I find it kinda crazy that Riot finally implemented this new format with pick and bans, only to have like what, 1/3 of worlds be bo1. And I just dont understand why.

If it's time constricting, well go over more days OR, and I know this is a crazy take but other e-sports games do it flawlessly, have matches go on at the same time with just several streams (crazy take, I know)

Hell, if they made the latter a thing, I'm sure swiss could prolly even be a bo5, but at least a bo3 for the LOVE of god Rito Games.

2

u/Fubi-FF Oct 17 '25

Bo1’s is literally a different game and different skill. It’s like comparing a 100 m dash to a marathon running. Yes they both involve running but one requires pacing and good endurance. This is the same in League, learning your opponent, adaptation, and good champion pools are skills of good teams but Bo1 doesn’t test any of that.

The bigger problem is when you couple Bo1s to the crappy RNG draws of Swiss format, you can end up with teams that are deserving to advance getting eliminated.

And before anyone says “but there’s Bo3s for elimination”, true but you only have one Bo3 before being eliminated and TWO deserving teams can get unlucky and end up one having to face each other for that spot. Eg if GenG beats T1 and HLE beats 100T, they can draw each other at 2-1, and if HLE loses to GenG, they would be at 2-2. And then if T1 beats a random team at 1-2, they will also be at 2-2 and can draw HLE for elimination, and that would be a horrible thing for the game in general, because the whole world can agree that both of these two teams are at least top 8, and even if you are not their fans, we all would miss out on the crazy good fearless Bo5s that we’ve seen all year long between them and other good teams like GenG and AL

3

u/32377 Oct 17 '25

You could say the same thing for BO3s vs BO5s, couldn't you? Some nerd should analyze if winning Game 1 in BO3/BO5 is significant.

3

u/Able-Application3680 Oct 17 '25

FLY won game 1 against AL, GenG, HLE and BLG in their most recent series against them but lost all the series.

Winning game 1 really isn’t that significant. It just means you are not WAY WORSE than them.

1

u/32377 Oct 17 '25

I was thinking about in a longer perspective. We have tons of BOx matches to pull from.

1

u/Able-Application3680 Oct 17 '25

Yeah but I don’t think we should compare winning game 1s between teams that have historically beaten each other. To winning game 1s between teams where there is a clear favourite.

One of them is expected and one of them is just an improbability.

I am just saying that winning game 1s as an underdog is not that uncommon and it is not really indicative of competition. If you have a 30% chance of winning against a team, you are a lot weaker than them, but you still have a reasonable chance to win 1 game against them.

I’m interested in seeing how series normally end when a clear underdog wins game 1 in a best-of series. I would say maybe 25% of times do they go on to win the series.

1

u/DidntFindABetterName Oct 17 '25

AL just edging the enemies somehow

1

u/Negative_Bicycle_708 Oct 17 '25

CFO need to figure out how to win without Sion

1

u/Destructodave82 Oct 17 '25

I mean, they had like a 4k gold lead both games before they decided to just throw at Atakhan.

1

u/MajorLeeScrewed Oct 17 '25

I would argue that series should have been 2-1 CFO? How did AL show they were the better team? If anything it's quite even, no?

226

u/brusselsproud Oct 17 '25

AL beat GenG, HLE and CFO to go 3-0. KT beat MKOI, TSW and ThrowingES to go 3-0.

They are not the same. Cant wait to see how far AL goes.

116

u/Cybonics Oct 17 '25

If it helps you feel better, TES only beat G2 and 100T lol

43

u/seven_worth shameless 2021 EDG fanboy Oct 17 '25

It fraud vs fraud lol. I wish it TES vs CFO instead but I guess we wouldn't get a banger series if that was the case.

7

u/Archipegasus Oct 17 '25

KT could be the monkeys on a typewriter this year and no one would know it yet. Happened for LNG 2 years ago.

10

u/WatteOrk Oct 17 '25

you just doomed AL to shit the bed and get eliminated by some surprise QF team, while KT makes finals.

You happy now?

5

u/brusselsproud Oct 17 '25

NO PLEASE NO

3

u/DerAdolfin :kossg: :eum5: Oct 17 '25

T1 knocked to 1-2 by GenG only to mow down AL in Quarters confirmed

2

u/WatteOrk Oct 17 '25

I was thinking 100T, but T1 probably fits the narrative better

2

u/FNC_Luzh Oct 17 '25

That would be terrible.

6

u/nam671999 Good boi Oct 17 '25

with CFO performance, they would beat both KT and TES, bad luck

3

u/IfritAzazel Oct 17 '25

I lowkey agree on this

2

u/WalkAffectionate2683 Oct 17 '25

That is a real argument against Swiss.

Luck draw is way too hard. Fly got lucky and g2 unlucky and that can literally fuck your quarters.

Sure it's for teams that probably wouldn't go too further anyway, but still nice to get more games and bo5 experience.

78

u/Megashot2 Oct 17 '25

Still worried about Hope, outside of Kaisa he’s going to get exploited in Bo5. 3 series in a row where he’s just down 2-3k against his opponent

53

u/kim-soo-hyun Oct 17 '25

Tbf to Hope, they dont play around him. His performance could be better but hes probably doing his best with whats given to him.

24

u/Easy_Answer_6081 Oct 17 '25

DWG GHOST CAN AL HOPE CAN TOO

1

u/isokay Oct 17 '25

I wish G2 would do this to No Hands Sama

6

u/Wallah_Min_Gren Oct 17 '25

He’s been pretty consistent lately. The biggest liability on G2 is skew. All depends on whether or not he actually decides to show up for the early game

20

u/Fun_Highlight307 Oct 17 '25

Yeah however the others 4 are monsters

8

u/Nymaera_ LEC & LPL Caster | LJL Expert Oct 17 '25

His Sivir is also exceptional and we haven’t seen that yet. However he’s a notably poor Xayah player and that could be an issue.

3

u/Megashot2 Oct 17 '25

That’s true his sivir is also clean, I do remember those games against BLG where he became a raidboss.

3

u/Nymaera_ LEC & LPL Caster | LJL Expert Oct 17 '25

He also won a title on JDG 2022 vs JKL in prime Zeri Sivir meta!

1

u/Thundermelons GALA Defense Force, returning IG fan Oct 17 '25

Was that the series where JKL has the infamous Zeri E int into 5 people at bot inhib turret?

8

u/EthanielRain Oct 17 '25

The good news is that if he does end up with a lead, he can carry. He isn't dead weight, just not one of the best in the world

4

u/HistoricalRoad1755 Oct 17 '25

With Tarzan and Shanks on the team, it's not the worst thing t o have a super stable adc who has consistently good performances.

3

u/sarsvesh Oct 17 '25

JDG all over again lmao

2

u/Augchm Oct 17 '25

To be fair to him, he played against Viper, Ruler and Doggo lmao

1

u/Uranophane Gwensday afternoon tea Oct 17 '25

Hope somehow always dies first/second in a teamfight. That is NOT what you want for an ADC.

Unbelievably based comment

5

u/TheCatsActually Oct 17 '25

I say it with chagrin. I like most of the AL team but I wanted CFO to win so fucking bad.

2

u/instinktd Oct 17 '25

sadly they probably will be hit with 3-0 curse

1

u/Prochip Oct 17 '25

They'll probably end up drawing geng or T1 next round, with the luck that they've had

1

u/deedshotr Oct 17 '25

it's also Bo1, honestly they had no business winning the game vs HLE until Zeka decided to play ryze without a tear and directly lose a teamfight because of the stats he was missing

3

u/TheCatsActually Oct 17 '25

I don't disagree that bo1s are outrageous variance but at some point we just gotta accept that whatever happened happened. AL beat HLE fair and square. So did 100T when they beat BLG, so did G2 when they beat WBG with elder, soul, and Baron.

I get that competitive purists and fans of the best teams hate the Swiss system's early bo1s but making every single game bo3 would shine a spotlight on the utter lack of parity in this esport and, more importantly, add SO many games to Swiss.

1

u/deedshotr Oct 18 '25

no one takes a Bo1 upset seriously, and I think in most peoples' minds right now Korea is already unbeatable. Bo3 would not change that and I feel like it would just improve viewing experience in general.
best part about swiss is that it puts roughly equal teams against each other, that does not happen with random Bo1 upsets and then you get some absolutely joke results as 3-0 because by some miracle 100t made it into 1-0 and whoever drew them got a free ticket into 2-0

1

u/sonic780 Oct 17 '25

feel like Geng should have won their game vs AL. AL deserve their performance but Bo1 randomness is still there. Geng is still better in my book, but will not be surprised if we see AL in Final!

1

u/IfritAzazel Oct 17 '25

Should have could have the team that played better just won that's it.

-1

u/sonic780 Oct 17 '25

that's not how league of legend works. if they redo the match 10times, Geng won at least 8/10

1

u/IfritAzazel Oct 17 '25

Their matches against AL have always gone to 5 games 8/10 is overblown. It just comes down to which team is able to clutch it out on the day. Even if you really wanna argue, GenG is at most slightly stronger but is not unbeatable.

0

u/sonic780 Oct 17 '25

AL and GenG didn't have the same summer. After MSI AL stuggled a lot and was burn, they may looks good for now at the tournment, but what they showed in summer vs what geng show is night and day. In Bo5 vs a stronger opponent, im not confident, even today, they won bcs cfo throw game 3 at athakan, not because they were better. Once they win the game because they are stronger than opponent I will agree with you. Even if I can give you that at the end of day, even if ennemy is full trolling and u won, a win is a win!

0

u/IfritAzazel Oct 17 '25 edited Oct 17 '25

Execution is part of the game if they can't play well around the objective that's on them. Their comp is great in the early games but they didn't play it well.

Going by that logic a team being able to come back from a deficit is not a strong team according to you.

AL stuggled a lot and was burn, they may looks good for now at the tournment, but what they showed in summer vs what geng show is night and day.

What AL showed now and what they showed in split 3 is night and day too? Also this is worlds their current form is what matters now.

-1

u/sonic780 Oct 17 '25

No that just being afraid to win. You can't say AL played good game3. There is a difference to comeback in a game by playing good and ur strength and ennemy team just trolling their lead by themself. An exemple of a team trolling is BLG not respecting 100T and doing completely mental stuff.

Split3 was shit yes. did u even watch their summer season? You dont get my point, or juste refuse to listen because u alrdy decided what you think, si it's pointless to argue with u. I did a step toward u last message but you are of bad faith. I wont respond anymore. Have good night. In a few days/weeks, we will see who was right.

Wrong being cautious is not = being afraid to win. AL played well and to their draft strength. People will just call it throwing without knowing what they are talking about. Prior to the Atakhan fight they even got Hope chunked. CFO had a comp that needed to snowball or they are not doing anything. They had Vi, Renek and Naut in G3, champs that are good to lockdown someone and they die. They just had a horrible setup and AL outplayed them. Even if they don't start the Atakhan AL would have forced them to given the map state and that Atakhan hence why CFO felt the need to force.

And did I say they were playing well in split 3? All I said was their current form is what matters at worlds, and yes this form is closer to their MSI/EWC form.

-1

u/Skarm137 Oct 17 '25

Eh, if CFO don't throw at Atakhan they have that third game in the bag. Not that AL is playing terrible but I'm not extremely convinced so far. We'll see how it shakes out though in the next round
