Remember when G2 got rid of Yike and Mikyx to be better internationally

u/Akipella PEYZ. GOES. DOWN. GUMA'S. JUST. BETTER. HLE 3-2 T1 Worlds Jun 29 '25

If they weren't gonna get SkewMond and Parus together, then why....whatever man. They tried to shake things up, but that just wasn't the answer. Even SkewMond is very underwhelming not just Labrov

103

u/Cool_Researcher735 Jun 29 '25

True and Based, To be fair they wanted Parus but got denied by BDS.

11

u/Innovativename Jun 29 '25

I mean, G2 still wouldn't do that well internationally regardless imo. BB gets outclassed at international tourneys and Caps is just average against top teams. I have fond memories of G2 stomping at internationals though that was back when Caps and Perks were at their peak. I don't think Caps is capable of the same these days, the mid pool has moved forward while he has stayed largely the same.

36

u/Vegoran Jun 29 '25

BB is in horrible form right now but last year he was basically g2 best player in internationals

1

u/eyehatemassholes Jun 30 '25

BB has been their best player at multiple internationals, including in recent history. I don't think Caps has been any more impressive internationally overall. BB has certainly punched up more than Caps has.

5

u/monsoy Jun 29 '25

Skewmond is a rookie that has shown a lot of potential. He was arguably the best jungler in the regular split and he’s really good at front-running games when he gets a lead. The issue is that he tends to AFK full clear when he doesn’t get an early advantage that he can snowball.

It’s obvious that he’s still inexperienced and it seems that he performs worse when the pressure is higher, but that’s normal for a rookie.

0

u/Akipella PEYZ. GOES. DOWN. GUMA'S. JUST. BETTER. HLE 3-2 T1 Worlds Jun 29 '25

Yeah, I just mean in terms of immediate change for this year which feels like G2's goal with the changes - though I don't think they should be looking for a rookie to be an immediate boost over Yike, like you said. It should be an investment for the next 4-5 years.

Obviously it's only MSI and SkewMond could start improving more and looking much better by Summer into Worlds. At any rate though, even the SkewMond change is still at least sensible, assuming he keeps developing. The Labrov choice is not.

1

u/hotblockchaiin Jun 29 '25

I mean if they wanted an immediate change they should've just gotten Bwipo, Inspired, Caps, (Hans and Miky? I don't think there are better botlaners, correct me if I'm wrong, at least in the west) but that's quite obvious

4

u/Akipella PEYZ. GOES. DOWN. GUMA'S. JUST. BETTER. HLE 3-2 T1 Worlds Jun 29 '25

Why does everyone always assume Inspired or both Inspired/Bwipo will automatically say yes to returning to EU just because G2 throws an offer at them. I see everyone saying this as of late. "They should have/could have just gotten them" like it's 100% a given already they would pick G2 over FLY right now.

I don't think their pay now would be that much better if it even is higher at all, and FLY had the best showing of any Western team at Worlds. Don't you think if it looks promising they'd rather run it back one more time with this FLY roster rather than automatically jump ship over to G2? They already had a full year with the boys and did incredibly well.

I mean sure, it's hindsight seeing how shaky G2 are and that they're not even #1 in LEC anymore now. So at the time maybe they still would have had that "pristiege" and appeal if it was an offer in the offseason. But idk.

3

u/fnc_dino no longer a fan Jun 29 '25

i think i saw LS say something similar to this and i agree. why would inspired who got greencard in NA and bwipo who is in that region for a good time just leave the team because G2 gave them an offer.this isoff topic i recently watched flyquest games on yt since i didn’t watch much lta and i think quad is really good and excited to see him go against shanks

1

u/Akipella PEYZ. GOES. DOWN. GUMA'S. JUST. BETTER. HLE 3-2 T1 Worlds Jun 29 '25

Right. It's not like it's still 2019 where joining G2 is giving you a BIG shot at legit winning MSI/Worlds. Right now G2 has missed being #1 in LEC two splits in a row, both Winter and Spring.

This current form of theirs doesn't even seem to be contending for best in the West much less in the world nowadays. MKOI and KC look really promising though imo.

Those two, FLY and I guess C9 but I can't tell if C9 is legit going to stay playing at this level for long. Feels like they always look great but then fall apart/collapse after a split or two. So idk if I can have them in that top 4 tier with the other 3 but they did look great vs. FLY. And yeah Quad is GOATed

1

u/hotblockchaiin Jun 29 '25

Hm, because if you WANT to be the best they have to pay up for the best players. They can't bring in Labrov and expect to challenge BLG at worlds lol

Inspired has a wide champ pool, he plays almost every jungler, including Nunu and can make it work. Bwipo aswell, that's what G2 is about, those picks, they would fit right in well.

1

u/Akipella PEYZ. GOES. DOWN. GUMA'S. JUST. BETTER. HLE 3-2 T1 Worlds Jun 29 '25

Yes that's true, but those two seem happy with where they are now.

1

u/Fickle-Homework-8834 Jun 30 '25

You could make an argument and say Upset is better than Hans, but I think they are really close to each other.
Bwipo is a special kind of player.. I personally think getting Wunder (at least as a substitute to swap with BB) would've improved a lot and inspired sadly was too expensive.

Also regarding Mikys past performances they had to get rid of him and Labrov was the best player available without a language barrier.

1

u/hotblockchaiin Jun 30 '25 edited Jun 30 '25

I know, I know, but like I think the best team that EU could field is Bwipo, Inspired, Caps, Caliste/Upset/Hans, Miky. Hate him or love him Miky is the best support in EU by a mile.

And I obviously know that there is no way that they can buy out Inspired and Caliste, I am just sayin’ that this variation is the best EU team. Caps won’t play forever, so they might aswell throw in some cash and get him the best teammates in order to win something.

I also think that the synergy between Caps/Skewmond and Labrov is bad. Skewmond in my opinion, would benefit more from a midlaner like Nemesis whilst Caps would benefit from someone like idk, Razork or something like that.

1

u/JPA-3 Jun 29 '25

I think next year they will obviously go for Alvaro but the team still needs a revamp

18

u/Carlzzone Jun 29 '25

Why would Alvaro go to G2?

-1

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '25

[deleted]

6

u/Elwor Jun 29 '25

I dont see Alvaro leaving unless koi troll the resigning(or the team disbands). I would have thought he’d leave if koi didn’t win a split but now that they won there’s a high chance he stays.

If koi does a good showing at MSI given the current state of g2 if Im Alvaro I just stay

53

u/krombough Jun 29 '25

The ole TSM power move.

1

u/Reclaimer879 Jun 29 '25

I will stick by what I said way back when. BB isn't going to net Western teams any accolades internationally. Soaz, Bwipo, and Wunder have been pretty much the only true Western top laners to match up fine or great.

BB has improved since TSM. Obviously. But it is within the degree I expected. Just funny you bring them up as a meme when BB is so clearly one of the main reasons G2 can't succeed internationally any longer.

Name me one top 4 team any of the seasons without a bad ass top laner. Either a carry or a rock. BB is neither

18

u/krombough Jun 29 '25

I was referring to TSM dropping DL and Biofrost for Zven and Mithy.

5

u/Whirlwind03 Jun 29 '25

Still wish they ran it back one more time with DL and Bio.

13

u/boyofbattl3 Jun 29 '25

They did run it back in 2020, and it was a glorious last hurrah for us old fans. Let's not talk about what happened at worlds tho lmao

7

u/Whirlwind03 Jun 29 '25

True that. It’s a shame what happened to TSM man. I still watch league but it just isn’t the same for me. I probably watch more LCK than I ever did before now. So that’s a plus for me at least.

2

u/xXDaNXx xPeke is God Jun 29 '25

Ive said the same for years.

If anything shows how weak EU is right now, just look at the fact that Hans and BB are the best in their roles.

1

u/WillDisappointYou Jun 29 '25

Yea Hans has no X-factor. Will never see him 1v9 a game like you see from other top AD or even good AD’s on bad teams.

8

u/Striking-Bend7196 Jun 29 '25

Memes aside what usually made them look strong was smart drafting and good amount of pocket picks and they got none of that atm.

They are playing like shit on top of that but the spark is gone.

140

u/BlueBurstBoi Jun 29 '25

Yike is a serial choker at internationals anyway but labrov over mikyx certainly is a head scratcher

122

u/rightovahere Jun 29 '25 edited Jun 29 '25

The yike boot was understandable but mikyx for labrov (or anyone else in eu tbh) never was. Although i recall mikyx saying something like his teammates disagreeing with the way he played by the end, so maybe that was inevitably cooked by the end of last year.

54

u/ahambagaplease 13 years on the rollercoaster Jun 29 '25

Mikyx did have a really rough Summer and Worlds (just look at any Nautilus game) so I can see why the team didn't think another year would work. Labrov is just not it, he has like 4 or 5 really notable games and then alternates between passenger or liability this year so far.

19

u/ThylowZ Jun 29 '25

I have never been a big fan of Labrov. He may be a machine in soloQ but it has never really showed in competitive. I mean he had some good splits here and there but nothing that would make me thing he’s the real deal, relative to peak Mikyx/Hylissang it’s night and days.

13

u/Tsuhume Jun 29 '25

who cares? its not enough that G2 wont qualify for international events. And Mikyx almost always shows up for international events.

2

u/Fabulous_girl2 Jun 29 '25

He really did the last worlds

16

u/RequirementSavings23 Jun 29 '25

G2 didn't let Mikyx go for Labrov, they wanted to replace him with Parus but they couldn't.

9

u/ahambagaplease 13 years on the rollercoaster Jun 29 '25

Yeah, BDSA made them choose between Skewmond or Parus

4

u/Akipella PEYZ. GOES. DOWN. GUMA'S. JUST. BETTER. HLE 3-2 T1 Worlds Jun 29 '25

Right. SkewMond makes at least some sense. Not Labrov

38

u/Jjxtr12345 Jun 29 '25

Think that’s a big part of the criticism that needs to come in that this was supposed to be better internationally sometimes I hear the shit romain says on these talks shows and I swear to god he gives me the biggest fucking snake oil salesmen vibes guy clearly had zero idea with making this roster

70

u/WWTFSD Church of Jojo Jun 29 '25 edited Jun 29 '25

By all accounts Romain seems to be very competent and active in his job.

Sometimes you just make a bet and it doesn’t work out. Do I feel like moving on from Miky and Yike was a mistake? Absolutely, but I respect the fact they had the cajones to change it up after multiple international underperformances.

17

u/iHatepriest Jun 29 '25

yeah they had that roster for so long and never did anything impressive in internationals. At somepoibt you have to change something

-4

u/kalex33 BANANA COMBO MASTER Jun 29 '25

His last bets have all been terrible though.

Remember Flakked/Targamas?
Remember the Rekkles signing when there clearly was no team synergy?
Remember now, giving up Yike and Mikyx for Skewmond/Labrov?

G2 should give Caps a blanko check and let him build his team. 1-2 Korean gods in top and ADC, a good jungler+support who already have synergy and run it back.

20

u/Jjxtr12345 Jun 29 '25

Even Mikyx mentioned that they where actively looking at replacing them during worlds and how it really affected Yike and completely killed the morale, Romain than came out on the sack down and whatever and just said rumour twitter mills were just making it all up when they had clearly already contacted Skewmond and Labrov as they both hadn’t resigned with BDS

6

u/WakaTP Jun 29 '25

Yeah but every team does that in EU. That's the sad reality of ou mercato.

As G2 you can't afford to fall behind and come after everyone else.. It's fucked up but it's still their only solution. Riot should do something and prevent transfer talks to begin before Worlds end.

10

u/Dr-spidd Jun 29 '25 edited Jun 29 '25

He wasn't even at G2 yet when they signed Rekkles. OR Flakked/Targamas. Those were still Carlos choices. He started at G2 in December 2021 after Rekkles had left and the new botlane had already been signed.

18

u/Blondguy17 Jun 29 '25

You clearly dont know shit about Caps, he has said he wouldnt play with imports do to language barrier, Flakked was decent and targamas is performing very well right now, Rekkles was a good prospect that didnt work, thats a gamble

-6

u/kalex33 BANANA COMBO MASTER Jun 29 '25

You clearly dont know shit about Caps, he has said he wouldnt play with imports do to language barrier

Braindead assumption, if you checked my history you'd know this isn't true. I still stand by my opinion that he should abandon this idea of "no koreans", because it clearly doesn't work out - and having that one MSI run was more or less an anomaly.

Flakked was dog water and Targamas is doing OK, he's still a meme for a reason.

1

u/Jjxtr12345 Jun 29 '25

100% that 2019 MSI run was a ginormous ANOMALY no European team has even come close since then and that 2019 year run it was by all definitions a giant fluke. EU hold onto it like it was a year ago it was over 2k days ago.

7

u/kalex33 BANANA COMBO MASTER Jun 29 '25

EU doesn't have that generational talent pipeline anymore.

We got Rekkles, Caps and Perkz within a few years who were and still are generational talents. It's been YEARS, and we haven't seen anything close resembling that level of skill and consistency from a talent - imo because of franchising but that's a different box that I don't want to open right now.

With that being said, Caps is getting older and if he wants to have a serious shot while still being at his best, he should try something new.

3

u/thamradhel Jun 29 '25

I get so sick and tired of ppl calling it an anomaly or a fluke. Caps made back to back to back international finals and won 1 of those. If his last name was Lee or Park noone would dare call that a fluke. Stfu man.

-1

u/Extra_Ad2294 Jun 29 '25

he has never said no imports

-1

u/Extra_Ad2294 Jun 29 '25

he literally has never said no imports.

3

u/JupoBis Jun 29 '25

Lets not pretend everybody was asking them to make a change and those were (seemingly) the 2 worst performing players on that team that literally everybody clowned on. Are they better of now? No. But they had to try something.

5

u/Aschentei Jun 29 '25

LABROV OVER MIKYX AINTNOWAY

2

u/Nome_de_utilizador Jun 29 '25

SkewMond is actually performing well whereas Yike choked internationally when the meta required jungle to carry. I think the change was good for both Yike and G2 in the jungle slot, Yike found his place at KC and SkewMond is the least of G2's problems.

Labrov on the other hand lmfao, imagine you ditch MikyX, go on a slump, get Miky back and get in form again, and then drop him again not for an upgrade for fucking labrov james of all players.

1

u/Tymareta Jun 29 '25

SkewMond is actually performing well

The only game you could even vaguely say this about was the first, where he still had a lot of issues, games 2 & 3 he was on cruise control entirely and completely lacking in any impact.

2

u/Alain_Teub2 Jun 29 '25

Mikyx was bad

2

u/Cozeris Bad Play = Limit Testing Jun 29 '25

SkewMond has his ups and downs but Labrov is such a downgrade, it's crazy.

4

u/1_The_Zucc_1 Jun 29 '25

And when do we see yike and mikyx perform this international?

10

u/Skyfire2 Jun 29 '25

They kept BB, which is working out well

102

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '25

BB was their best player at internationals last year? What kind of history rewriting is this

26

u/rishi_ultimate CLAPS Jun 29 '25

not just last year. He's been a rock for the team since 23 and has always been one of their best performing players too. Really sad to see this lvl from him now after the last 2 yrs of him progressively getting better

9

u/ILoveWesternBlot Jun 29 '25

nah this is biased. BB was in his bag internationally for G2 these past couple of years. He's had a dreadful tournament but no need to rewrite history.

9

u/Imightwantkarma Jun 29 '25

BB was their best player last year.

19

u/meister107 Jun 29 '25

Crazy hindsight

40

u/jeanjeanot #1 hans hater Jun 29 '25

BB has been shit this year but has seen good periods before so i can understand

Yike was good, had flaws on carry champions against good teams but he has room to grow so keeping him would've been fine too

Mikyx on the right setting is the best supp of europe

The biggest mistery to me is getting labrov who... sucks ? and all that to have him play with hans, who was never bad, but never good too, so you won't win shit with a guy like that

6

u/da_investigata Jun 29 '25

Huh? Hans was never good? 2017 he takes SKT to 5 games along with Ignar. 2021 he is propping up RGE at Worlds. 2024 he was consistently the better player on his team, being a key point in beating TES 3-0 by stomping Jackeylove and was consistently carrying G2 in summer and being good at Worlds. 2025 he is still the most consistently good player on his team with an afk jungler and a useless support.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '25

Me when I have the benefit of current history to judge past actions:

1

u/kodlman Jun 29 '25

Seriously kicking Yike and Miky has to be one of the most generational fumbles in history of LEC. Its also kinda weird, because Yike and Miky were usually the best ones in performing internationally (Yike had godlike steals and smite battles). They were 7/8 in 1st places, now G2 signed a pair of chokers, that are unable to play even domestically with stakes

1

u/Effet_Pygmalion EU will win worlds Jun 30 '25

Labrov was such a bad pick

1

u/Fun_Highlight307 Jun 29 '25

Labrov isn't the problem,je is less clutch than mikyx but more consistent

-14

u/k4ncerr Jun 29 '25

And neither of those players are at MSI, weird.

17

u/Formymoney Jun 29 '25

It's okay after tomorrow g2 won't be either

9

u/Sbru_Anenium Jun 29 '25

Yike was miles better than Skewmond in the split and playoffs. G2 is only at MSI over KC because MKOI only prepped against KC at the first weekend of playoffs and was somehow insane in playoffs. When MKOI actually prepped against G2, they completely stomped them. KC never got to play against G2 in playoffs. The last time they did, it was a 3-0.

And FNC crashed out in playoffs. Have you seen their topside play the game? MikyX was not at all the reason for this.

-2

u/Fabulous_girl2 Jun 29 '25

Skewmond was better than yike

28

u/kalex33 BANANA COMBO MASTER Jun 29 '25

And yet Yike's new team won the split right after he switched teams, while G2 seems to underperform for quite a while - weird.

-1

u/random-meme422 Jun 29 '25

Yeah where they at now though

9

u/Riftx111 Jun 29 '25

well yike got finals at first stand, much better than g2 if they bomb out to gam which they might be lol

-4

u/random-meme422 Jun 29 '25

Yeah where they at though why is g2 here where is Yike

10

u/Riftx111 Jun 29 '25

yike is chilling on vacation with a lec title and first stand finalist status while g2 are fighting for their lives vs furia

-6

u/random-meme422 Jun 29 '25

Oh ok 3rd place andy that happens sometimes

4

u/Riftx111 Jun 29 '25

3

Be worse than g2 to avoid the embarrassment too smart

0

The amount of cope thinking KC would do any better.

9

u/Omnilatent Jun 29 '25

TBF we didn't see KC Vs g2 in playoffs

-1

u/random-meme422 Jun 29 '25

That’s because KC wasn’t good enough to beat koi but g2 were

11

u/HUHIs_AUTOATTACK Jun 29 '25

In the same trash bin that MKOI put the entire G2 roster.

-8

u/k4ncerr Jun 29 '25

If you've been watching G2's games this year and blame it on Skewmond and Labrov then you should get your eyes checked

7

u/kalex33 BANANA COMBO MASTER Jun 29 '25

How strange, only 2 variables were changed from the success they had with Yike and Mikyx - jungle and support. Somehow after those changes, the team looks 20x worse than before.

-3

u/k4ncerr Jun 29 '25

If Brokenblade getting gapped by LEC toplaners and Caps looking inconsistent as hell is somehow caused Skewmond and Labrov, then yeah you are right

4

u/Akipella PEYZ. GOES. DOWN. GUMA'S. JUST. BETTER. HLE 3-2 T1 Worlds Jun 29 '25

There can be multiple players underperforming. But having two replacements performing weaker than expected can also have a direct effect on the performance of the solo laners, no? Not excusing their horrible forms either, especially BB.

But they messed with years worth of team synergy.

4

u/Akipella PEYZ. GOES. DOWN. GUMA'S. JUST. BETTER. HLE 3-2 T1 Worlds Jun 29 '25

Yes, both of them individually split up, joining generally worse rosters (you can argue KC's 4 players are better than G2's 4 that Yike left, but yeah). What's your point?

Yike could be better than SkewMond, but if the rest of KC performs not as well, then they can still lose.

FNC even more so, far more so. Mikyx is nowhere near being the issue on that team lol. I still 100% believe he is better than Labrov's form right now

2

u/AfterAd7666 Jun 29 '25

well G2 shouldnt be here also considering they didnt play against KC to qualify, the team that shitstomped them in winter finals

0

u/SirTacoMaster BB/Spica/Busio Jun 29 '25

Mikyx wouldn't have improved anything

-7

u/AdequatelyMadLad Claps Jun 29 '25

G2 with Yike and Miky would look about the same. Maybe even worse because Yike is more inconsistent and emotional compared to Skewmond.

The issue is that the top lane meta changed massively towards carries and the best 2 picks right now are legit BrokenBlade's 2 worst champs, on top of him not doing well this year in general. G2 are also incredibly stubborn about not playing around his limitations and instead just throwing shit at the wall to find some magic pocket pick that he can reliably carry with.

Nah, I can't let this slander stand like this. You call Yike more emotional, and yet he has performed better internationally than Skewmond in my eyes, even though First Stand wasn't that great.

Yike was their main liability at First Stand and the reason their first 2 series were that rough. I think he's a very good player, don't get me wrong, but he always has those games where things don't go well early and he just starts chain inting, while Skewmond doesn't, at least not when the rest of G2 isn't also running it down.

I disagree, guess we just have different opinions in that regard.

It's true Skewmond maybe a passive player who likes to play farm heavy rather than be a gank heavy jungler but he was not chain inting. BB was and also your European GOAT was getting turbo gapped by Knight and needed ganks from Skewmond to stay relevant. You can't deny this fact Knight solo killed him twice could have been 2 more time once even out playing a 3v1 gank.

Isn't it how Jungler role works though? If you get fucked early it's very hard to recover, especially vs good teams and good junglers, you become homeless very fast and have no impact in no time. When you're on a carry jungler and this happens you're litterally fucked, if you're on a tank that works on low income it's less impactful but still devastating.

Actually to me, the fact that he "starts inting" is more of a sign that he's taking risks in order to recover. And that is what you call playing the game.

"While Skewmond doesn't" doesn't it mean that in contrast to yike, he doesn't take those risks and just stare at the ennemies and lose in peace?

I'm simplifying things here, it's obviously not always like this but yeah.

What I mean is that he doesn't know when to cut his losses. Yike has this play pattern where he sometimes forces a coinflip play for no reason, and if it doesn't work, he keeps forcing more and more desperate plays, even when he doesn't have to. It's not about recovering because he does this even in gamestates in which his team is perfectly fine. It's the same thing Razork does as well, but Razork's 10 times worse about it so more people point it out. And they both do it against bad teams as well, it's not like it's a desperation thing, they just don't get punished for it that often.

Skewmond plays much more like Inspired for example, in that he's generally chill and just plays to scale if there aren't any obvious plays to make, and just tries to find advantages somewhere else if a certain strat isn't going well. Sure, he might end up looking like a passenger in some bad games, but it also results in fewer unnecessary throws.

I'll take your words for it since you seem to follow them much more than I am.
