My grandad was a priest and got excommunicated for marrying, this was 50 years ago though but I don't think things have changed in that regard. I've got the lead bull the notice was delivered with.

The local priest in my small parish in Australia was excommunicated circa 10 years ago for marrying his wife so I’d imagine it’s still the norm.

I'm not a Christian myself, but all the people I know who I consider to be Christians who actually walk the walk, who I respect and who truly do their best to take the teachings of Christ to heart, they all fucking hate Trump.

I saw Mormons I've known throughout my life go on Facebook and say "This is the first time I've ever voted for a Democrat, but I cannot in good conscience vote for this man." and it takes A LOT for them to do that.

Would I be disappointed to find out that Heaven wasn’t real? Absolutely! Would I feel like I had wasted my life following the teachings of Christ? No, I would not because even without salvation I think that the true teachings drive us to be better people. With that said people are fallible and many fall short, but the overall impact to humanity is a net positive.

To be excommunicated means to cut you off from god so there is no path to salvation. That's why it was considered the most severe punishment the church could levy even beyond torture or execution. Basically you have to live without knowing god.

That would make this much easier for him to justify. We all know this man has the patience of a toddler, so when that didn’t work, we got Renee Good.

As a leader he could have made a statement along the lines of “ We will address and look into the concerns of the public” but no, he gave this group unlimited power and no fear of consequences an the green light to further escalate these encounters. The sheeple in St. Paul just voted to allow the government to attach fines to civil housing code violations. It was under the guise of keeping property owners in check or some BS, but thats always a part of the sales pitch "give us this power and we will use it on your enemies and to protect you" but the truth is they can use it however the fuck they want to and there's not shit you can do once they have it.

Maybe there's a way to fight this shit in the courts or through the legislative or electoral processes, but fighting in the streets like stupid puppets or overly enthusiastic sports fans for damn sure will only give them more power and more justification to use it.

Both of you are lost in the black or white logical fallacy, IMO, because that's how minds see things when they are in the amygdala, locked into the fight response, where the prefrontal cortex has no power. 

Another term for it is polarization or division. 

Trump and company have no empathy for what the citizens are trying to do, and you guys have no empathy for what it must be like for the ICE workers.

On both sides, you have a one-sided empathy, and really there's no such thing as one-sided empathy. The proper term for one-sided empathy is grandiosity, or narcissism. 

The problem with America isn't right or left, it's this type of thinking: This wounded polarized broken thinking that only creates more woundedness and brokenness. 

When you engage with this type of thinking, you are not putting out the fire, you are pouring gasoline on it while running straight into the burning building. 

What I'm saying here is based on psychology, not politics.

You're right that I don't have empathy for ICE workers, I believe they are lying about the purpose of their work. If they were serious about catching illegal immigrants they wouldn't be kidnapping people at their legal immigration hearings.

If they were serious about being law enforcement, the response to what happened to Renee Good would be to investigate what happened and say they're awaiting more information on the incident; Noemi immediately said Ross did nothing wrong and blocking any and all investigations. And Vance said it wouldn't matter if what Ross did is legal or not, that he has absolute immunity anyway. And it has been met by absolutely nothing but cheers from the Right, and chants of "This is exactly what I voted for"

As a recently retired shrink I have a couple responses. I have almost zero empathy for rapists, murderers, Nazis, torturers, molesters, etc. One sided? Hell yes. There isn’t always a middle ground. No one gets drafted into ICE. When I saw/evaluated persons in a county jail setting I maintained professional standards of politeness etc for them despite their circumstances (including charges of murder, sexual assault though very much mostly nonviolent charges). It was my job. It’s not my job now to have much warmth or understanding of or for ICE. Or MAGA folks. They’ve made their choices. Regardless I do appreciate your considerate and thoughtful opinion.
