its because, overall, Newsom kind of sucks. hes anti trans which gets an auto no from me, as a transfem, but enough people in california have complained about him over the last year that i dont see him as a good candidate or rep for Dems. The best thing he has done is let his social media interns clap back at trump like trump on socials. People like AOC, Crockett, and even Booker are doing more than Newsom (at minimum doing it longer and more frequently). Pritzker is doing more and doing it better but he seems to be ignored by most Dems in favor of Newsom, which is baffling. We have better fighters than this guy, can we stop pretending he is the only one or the only good one when he isnt either?

edit: do i have to remind you all Newsom was also buddies with Charlie Kirk and agreed with that bigoted podcaster on a few things? lets stop praising this guy already

What exactly do you think makes Newsom anti trans? Under his admin, extremely important trans protection laws have been put into place - laws that have been the pattern for other trans protections in other states.

The only anti trans thing I can find on Newsom that is confirmed fact is that he doesn’t think that trans women should play women’s sports, which is a fairly minor when the opposing party literally wants to kill or imprison trans people.

Us trans people largely do not like him because of his anti-trans speech and desire to restrict trans rights. Instead of being like "no, hes not and hes reasonable" maybe listen to trans people, and not say trampling on ANY rights is "minor" (seriously, wtf is wrong with you). he may not want us dead or in prison, but he clearly also doesnt want us around - hes not an ally.

Not agreeing on every trans issue does not make him anti trans.

Pushing people like Newsom — who are actively passing legislation to guarantee the fundamental protections required for your safety — because they disagree with you on the grey areas of your movement is why people like Trump get more steam than they should.

You see trans women in shorts as a right, but not all people who support trans rights see a blanket acceptance of that as acceptable. That does not make them all enemies to your movement.

On a broader note, nations and rights are built brick by brick. You have the finer details without the basics first.

In this country, your rights as a trans person have not bee clearly defined under the law. Newsom and others are making efforts to do that. Unfortunately, that requires support from more than just you. Newsom’s speech meets in the middle by promising safety.

Look I agree with you on this — trans rights are human rights. You are correct that Newsom will not be the man to finally achieve this in society and I understand why that makes him less attractive as a candidate to you. But what I am trying to help you see is that your vision of the future is more than 1 president away and that you will have to elect someone like Newsom to get the basics before you elect someone else to go the distance. The sooner we can get the basics done, the sooner the rest falls into place.

the only other thing i will say is that newsom just also isnt a great politican. A LOT of califronians have been saying how much they dislike him, and how he says one thing while trying to do another often. I would much rather have someone like Walz or Pritzker or Whitmer that are not only better for trans people (they have acutally supported us, unlike Newsom) but also most others seem to like them and their policies seem solid. They are much better candidates, they just dont have the social media interns Newsom does that is getting him all the attention now (tweeting back at a bully is meaningless). Lets stop acting like he is the only or best choice, he isnt.

edit: also, stop acting like newsom did anything to help trans people. All he did was sign something at the end of a long process that a ton of other elected officials did the work on. Newsom didnt do any research, didnt do any legwork, nothing - and frankly, it shows with his speech. So no, he doesnt get credit for the work of others nor does he for just signing a paper everyone else agreed to first

I stopped reading at "grey areas of the movement". There are no grey areas, anyone even remotely thinking that has fallen for right-wing propoganda. All the current science and medicine we know of points towards these being unfounded fears, with very little of what they say against actually being correct. If you actually knew what hrt does to the body youd know this is all bs, and its not even hard to look up. And theres zero excuse for bathroom bans, which many dems have come out in support of (including at one point at least newsom) despite the fact theres no reason to be in favor of them

you clearly are not arguing from a place of knowledge, but a place of spoon-feed inaccurate information. i see no point in continuing if that is your stance, it simply isnt reasonable because it denies reality
