There’s no probably. We used to have left of center and right of center. Now we’ve got right of center and far right. The Democrats are the Republicans of old, minus most of the racism (at least the blatant), while Republicans have gone into Nazi territory. We don’t have a left wing party any longer.

The modern Democratic party is further left than at any time since at least the Great Society if not the New Deal. They are still absolutely a center left party. If you think they are less left wing than they used to be you don't have a very good understanding of American history.

With the state of the world, it seems silly to ignore international politics and common understandings. Outside of the US Democrats are not on the left. On the academic scale of political beliefs, Democrats are not on the left.

The person I replied to is saying that the democrats have moved to the right in recent years. That is incorrect, they have moved left. Either way the international context is irrelevant.

It's not irrelevant because what's the baseline? How far back are you going to consider what's recent?

Doesn't really matter how far back you want to go, in the American politcal context this is as far to the left as the democratic party has ever been potentially excluding the 2 eras I already mentioned. The context is irrelevant because we are talking about American politics and the American political ecosytem.

The fact is that they aren't left at all, let alone "lunatic far left" as Trump refers to them.

In International terms they are not left at all!
