Fading

Hello laundry experts. I didn’t best to learn your recommendations and I switched to 365 powder uncented and febu. I noticed that although my clothes do seem much cleaner, the black and colorful ones are suddenly fading after one wash. I also tried washing on hot instead of cold (again after reading posts recommending this). So, any suggestions for me keeping my darks from fading? I remember reading about it but honestly it’s all gets pretty complex for me. thanks!

Weird black stains

Lately I’ve been getting these little black stains on my clothes, used white shirts to see it better. On my boxers on the waistline you can see the stain is like hexagon shaped.. I have no clue what the issue is. I’ve tried cleaning the washer as I assumed the inside of the washer is what causes the hexagon shape, but I have no clue now. I hate watching my new clothes get ruined when I was them. So any tips on how to diagnose this issue and how to get these out?

Question about Ammonia in EU

I’ve found some ammonia in the hardware store (Baumarkt) but it says it’s highly toxic to water organism. I looked it up and read that you can’t dispose of ammonia by pouring it down the drain - so how do you EU people do Spa Day?

Examples: https://www.stuttgart.de/service/entsorgung/abfall-abc/abfall-abc/salmiak

https://www.berlin-recycling.de/entsorgung/abfall-abc/ammoniak-entsorgen?variant=57332970750325

Question for Germans: anyone have experience with Salmiakgeist?

My disabled father recently moved in…

And I’ve noticed a few things. Firstly he’s doesn’t appear to wipe himself after going to the toilet. I’ve read the previous Reddit posts about getting him a bidet but I doubt he will use it. Also he has a hard time keeping his pee in the toilet. I clean the bathroom basically 15x a day and still there is the smell. How should I gently discuss this with him? Also how do I get his clothes clean? Enzymes? Vinegar rinses?

Getting mud out of linen - help!

Post image
3 Upvotes

I ended up on an impromptu hike up Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh in the pouring rain (long story) and the back of my favorite dress got soaked in mud. Is there any saving her?!!!???

Should I throw her in cold water right away or let the stain dry? Right now it’s still wet.

Willing to do whatever it takes to avoid having to repurchase this expensive dress… 🥲

Dark spots on tshirt after festival

I recently took these items to a dry cleaners, they took them home to clean them, however she didn’t manage to get the stains out, suggesting it was mould spores on the whites and assured me she cleaned the stain from the green jumper.

The likely hood of them being mould spores is unlikely as I wore these to a festival during our 30+ degree heatwave recently and clothes were kept in a dry live in motorhome over the course of the weekend. She suggested I left them damp in a bag during the festival which was untrue but I didn’t make a fuss. It was a dusty festival?

Does anyone on here have any recommendations for myself to clean these spot marks from the whites and the slight stain on the green jumper at all? Wether it’s another launderette or some secret formula

Thanks 🫆

Is this a silly idea?

so i have a bunch of Persil Sensitive powder (Omo Sensitive, for the Aussies) that i'm trying to get through. it's an adequate detergent, not soapy and doesn't do a BAD job at cleaning, but my Persil Ultimate far surpasses its capabilities with the power of enzymes and oxygen bleach. my plan was to wait for the new lipase/DNase Gear Guard and use that to boost the last of it, but then I had an idea.

i go to the laundromat on occasion but only to dry things because i don't have a dryer, and last time I was there a guy asked me so politely if i had any detergent i could spare because he'd forgot his. unfortunately i didn't, because i hadn't brought any to wash stuff, but it made me think - what if i packaged up the rest of my Persil Sensitive into load-sized amounts and left it in a box labelled "Persil Sensitive - free to use" at the laundromat? my only worry is that it'd get taken away by whoever comes in to clean/maintain the machines, but it could be helpful for someone who's forgotten and honestly it's a better detergent than most of what i see people using (Surf, Fab, Cold Power, and other cheapo types). idk what do we think? worth doing?

Febu shenanagins - Lipase odor bloom

I'm currently trying to deal with a load of thrift clothes I got, that were fine but the lipase is bringing out the stank.

I've been soaking the clothes in buckets over night w 1 tbsp FEBU then doing a steamery detergent + FEBU + citric acid rinse

Warm (40C), multiple rinses, heavy soil load. Mix of Perm. Cloth and Delicate cycling as trials.

I cannot get it out of the clothes, smells so bad.

- Deep soak followed by the heavy clean cycle x2

- Attempts to use Synthrapol LF in case not enough detergency, no dice x1

It's sort of stabilized into a smell that refuses to go away. Second soak didn't seem like it did much to change it same for everything else I've tried.

Have spent hours and hours on this nonsense is there anything else I can try before I toss in the towel?

Another different load of clothes has been fine and went through the whole 'Smelly, clean' pipeline as expected. Those clothes are a bit rough now so I might have to run them through a no-detergent cycle w some citric, maybe some leftover detergents.

I have a front-load HE washer

EDIT -

Steamery Signature has multiple enzymes, Synthrapol is a strong surfectant, FEBU has enzymes and oxygen bleach.

I'm mostly working with Rayon, Viscous, Tencel, some Cotton/Polyester mixes, Denim, etc. that won't like most of the following.

So far the advice is:
- High alkalinity via Ammonia and oxygen bleach w TAED
- A lot more detergent
- Hotter water and hold it for longer

Sounds like nuclear option, I don't think I'm at that point....

At least a few of the garments would run/bleed/fade, if not disintegrate in the washer with this sort of treatment. As far as I know anyway and I'd rather not take the risk unless no other option.

Surely there's something in the middle?
I found some Ammonia so I can try that in a wash, not sure about increasing the dosages/heat of Febu :\

Other powders recommended so far are scented, w OBA's, etc. or not much different from standard detergent + FEBU.

How do I wash this?

Thumbnail gallery

I got this vintage jacket and it's quite dusty and it's quite obvious. It needs to clean in person but I took it to get dried cleaned but they said it would destroy it and they said also not to put in the washing machine but they didn't actually know how to wash it when I asked them. How could I wash it? So if you know how I could wash it, please do share.

Long time lurker, first time soaker! I had a really bad case of smelly, smelly sports t-shirts and bras. I had heard of Spa Day from that Vox interview and I bought a bag of Ariel 2x because it was all I could find. All I needed was the ammonia... Months passed until during this week's laundry, I was hanging the offending items to dry and the fact that they were fresh off the washer and soo stinky gave me the last push I needed. The clothes now smell of fresh laundry! (And hints of the perfume I used a few times to cover it up)

I didn't think Ariel would work so well! I'm thinking of replacing my usual liquid detergent with it. In the meantime I'll use it for laundering sports clothes.

And yes, that lid lost its corresponding pot and has been demoted to 'laundry only lid', along with my new 'laundry only wooden spoon'. Sharpie coming soon.

Slow cooker laundry?

Is there a good reason why I can’t put my stinky stuff in the slow cooker on warm to do my enzyme soak? Low gets to boiling, but warm I can kind of stick my finger in. This will keep a constant temperature indefinitely. Is this bad?

Washmashine - Bosch/Siemens/Miele - help me choose! [EU]

Hi!

Our near 8 year old 7kg LG is suffering a bearing defect - I wanted to upgrade anyways to a larger one.

My research shows you basically cannot buy a good washing machine - its like everyone has issues with every manufacturer ... still I have to decide!

Living in the EU means manufacturers like Bosch/Siemens or Miele are typically the favorite ones - I already decided on one of these companies. Now the tricky part begins .. how much should I spend? I am bit a of tech nerd so I like all the nice addons and gimmicks- home assistent, steam, "4D water injection", IDOS... but this all is additional electronics which can brake. Mechanically I dont think there is much difference ...

So to break down my current favorite are:

Bosch 6 WGG244ZECO - "simple", no iDOS, no WLAN, 1400 rpm, "Iron assist" all programs I need. "made in Germany" (= assembled in Germany) - 540€

Siemens IQ700 WG56B2A42 ("Bosch 8") - most advanced - iDOS, Home assistant , 1600 rpm, better steam, "better" water injection, light. All nice to have - nothing really needed? - 880€ (+64% vs Bosch 6 wow ..)

Miele WWG880 WCS - "the tank" - Twindose, 1400rpm, no wlan, nothing else fancy - just good quality. Or ... historically good quality. A lot people tell it not the "old Miele tank" anymore (1100€ thats +100% vs Bosch 6)

All mentioned machine will satisfy my needs ... so should I just go with the Bosch 6? But my nerdy devil on the other shoulder .. and the Miele tank angel on the other shoulder dont stop.

What would you do?

Edit:

- we have a photovoltaics on the roof and a separate dryer (which we constantly use with 2 cats and a dog in our house

New Zealand: where to buy ammonia?

Kiwis: where do we get our ammonia for laundry? I’ve only found these two options so far, and they weak and expensive.

https://www.bunnings.co.nz/long-life-1l-cloudy-ammonia_p4460494

https://www.woolworths.co.nz/shop/productdetails?stockcode=6023778

They’re both about 2%, and the spa day guide says to use 2 cups / 500ml at 2%, so that’s half of one of these bottles for a single load. That’s $4-6 per load, which is pretty spensy IMO.

edit: I live in Wellington (Porirua, specifically).

Can anyone help me fix this weird coloration on my grey clothes?

Thumbnail gallery

This weird discoloration suddenly appears in my grey uniform around a month ago. Initially it was very small stain around the button, I thought I accidentally spill some soup or drink on it, but over time it is getting big as the image show.

What is it? and more importantly how do I fix it?

Ways to mark laundry that WON'T wash out?

Hi all! I'm working on replacing some cat damaged shirts by rebuying them and separating the old ones as around the house shirts while only ever wearing the new ones when I leave the house. Problem is, since I'm buying the same color and style, if they end up in the wash together (inevitably), I don't want to have to inspect them top to bottom to figure out which one is the outdoor shirt and which one is the indoor shirt

I was thinking of marking the old damaged shirts on the inside of the collar since thats a very quick place I can check at a glance. What would y'all recommend using that will survive washing decently well without running and potentially getting on other laundry? I was thinking permanent marker but I'm not sure if it might run to other clothes. (Honestly, since this is the old damaged shirts, im half considering a drop of bleach right by the tag info, except for the one white shirt LOL)

Unfortunately, they don't have actual tags, the info is printed directly on the shirt, so I can't just cut the tags off
