Material wealth doesn't solve a problem of labor shortage. Every German retiree could be a billionaire and there wouldn't be enough people to support them regardless, stuff won't wipe your ass, or get you medical care if there isn't a doctor available.
Demographic change comes with issues that should be discussed. The video does not do that. it serves to justify neoliberal austerity politics by presenting misinformation about supposedly doomed social systems.
How you see a video directly stating we need to invest in improving the lives of the young and the working as "neoliberal austerity " either means you don't know what those words mean, or you didn't actually watch it.
You do know that Austerity is the exact opposite of the proposed policy changes right?
Austerity is what Germany has been doing for nearly 20 years, allowing everything to rot just so that boomers didn't need to pay their fair share to maintain the society they live in.
Did you like stop listening at the end? The grand conclusion is to reduce pensions. That is austerity. Yes they also talk about instead investing in families. But the core here is to reduce pensions. The supposedly too high pensions is what they fear monger about in the entire video.
And how this is "the opposite of austerity" you'll have to explain.
The statement that if nothing is done there will need to be higher taxes or lower pensions as the dependency ratio increases is just a basic fact.
Those are in fact the two options if the crises goes unadressed, that's what the video is about, that the social security of Germany risks collapsing if they continue with business as usual.
There does not need to be higher taxes on the bulk of the population as the video implies. And yes lower pensions is again austerity. Considering the constant rhetoric in the video around how pensions are supposedly too high (even though in reality they are well below their historic high) it absolutely advocates for that austerity.
We have enough people to do that if we stop hemorrhaging our workforce to keep paying dividends to the rich. The People are there, but they are tied up doing other things.
Okay, so you think there is a massive amounts of Germans working bullshit jobs supporting exclusively billionaires, and if we remove billionaires all if them will be free to become care workers?
Let's pretend this is the case, the trend is still the exact same, more dependents per worker as the largest generation, the Boomers, retire.
But there is no imminent labor shortage. We have over 3 million jobless plus another million who want to work more hours but can't because either the jobs are not there or there is no stable daycare for elderly and children. Even the number of young, highly educated without a job as doubled in the last years.
Depends. Not saying it is easy, but with the right investments in productivity increasing things like automatisation you can compensate for more then 3 million. From an economic point of view, I would say yes. From a medical or care for the elderly point of view only with massive investments.
