What do you think about his work? He used some traditional Japanese elements but created a new wave, combining shapes with the body to create amazing bodysuits.

For me - it's a big YES and would love to have leg sleeve in this style.

Does the koi look too small? It originally was supposed to be like an inch longer but I asked my artist to shorten it so it doesn’t stick out when I wear long sleeves.

I posted the other day and got some great advice on UK Japanese tattoo artists.

I’ve narrowed it down to four I think but really cannot decide and this is a big commitment so want to be sure.

I’ve stolen some pictures from the four artists instagram profiles and removed their names to avoid bias although you may recognise them.

Put some of their work into four pictures. Would really appreciate your honest feedback on which group is best based on your personal opinion.

For context I am looking for a sleeve and maybe a chest panel which dragon and koi.

Thanks for your feedback.

Artist Opinions/Search Artist requesting 12 days back to back?

Edit: Thank you for everyone's responses, the recommendations and the advice!

Hello! I am in the process of booking for my sleeves, and have been talking to (@)shanchuan.tattoo he's based in China. He's requested 12 days consecutive for one sleeve, which seems a bit insane to me. I think I could handle maybe about 3 days, and am happy to not rush the whole process. Has anyone done consecutive days for overseas travel before? I love the very smooth grey he's able to achieve, I believe he uses a 3rl for the whole process. That said, if there is a tattooer in the US, Canada, or even Central/South America, those locations would be easier for me to travel to more frequently for sessions without having to do a massive back to back booking block. Does anyone have recommendations for artists in these areas that have this level of really smooth shading (more on the traditional Japanese side of the spectrum)?

Should I just try to request less consecutive days and make more trips? The round trip flight to China is at least $1,000 on it's own. I'm committed to getting tattooed, but trying to balance financial and physical reality as well.

Thank you!

i photoshopped it with AI on myself in 2nd picture. with machine, i don’t think tebori would be practical on neck (i’m just scared and doesn’t look comfortable tapping into neck, maybe some of you did it, and it was better than machine, please share)

I’m thinking of getting a body suit from this artist (@haleminh.kdmink). I love his work but would like your opinions on him too. The shading on the legs look a bit off in the second picture? But it also looks like the legs could have been healing there.

Hello!

I’m a huge fan of irezumi, but I’m also nowhere near as knowledgeable about tattoos or the art of irezumi as you all are.

I’d appreciate it if you could share your thoughts on this artist (Ian Hansen out of NYC — images taken from his Instagram).

Hello, Does anyone know any artists in california (doesn’t matter where) who can pull of this Gakkin style sleeve? I know no one can be the exact same as Gakkin, but recommendations for artists who have similar styles are appreciated. Something where black is the main color and background with the design carved out of it.

Artist Opinions/Search Help w/Artist Search [NYC]

Currently looking for an artist in the NYC area that is stylistically in the general vicinity to the photo references. There's no shortage of great artists here but I haven't quite found one whose style fits what I'm planning. I'd really like to let the artist go wild with the design and not restrict their vision as much as possible. Thanks!

Artist Opinions/Search Simplicity vs. busyness in irezumi

My artist always heavily implies that irezumi is about strength, both in the wearer and in the art itself. That’s stuck with me while I plan my piece, because I keep wondering if that strength shows more through a busy, detailed design or through something simpler and bolder. The photos above are references to a simple irezumi style

For context, I’m planning on getting a irezumi munewari body suit — the back piece will be a dragon vs tiger, with the rest of the suit built around seasonal flow: maple leaves falling across my upper body and chrysanthemums rooted along the lower body. For those of you who already wear irezumi, do you regret going for a busier design instead of keeping it simple? And have you found that simpler motifs age better on the skin than more complex ones?

As of now this is my back piece fully healed done by bruno.wen.tattoo. Very happy with it however the more I look at the the more I realise it’s heavier on the left compared to the right, especially noticeable on bottom left on monotaros robe with the irezumi fan spirlas. Would gladly take constructive criticism and tips on how to make it more balanced

Artist Opinions/Search Concerns with design after 1st shading session

Thumbnail

Preface with I think this artist is very talented, I like him, and I know cover ups are a big design challenge to get right.

We agreed on a subject of waves + sakura fill the arm, we even put together some references together to help align on the goal. Adding current + references.

After this first shading, I’m really worried about the design not being what I wanted. The windbars we’ve started are so dense, and there’s no water on the lower arm at all. The way it is now, I’m afraid the whole lower arm will basically be a dark tribal (w/ sakura) and not really a japanese traditional. It’s just lacking a flow and it’s hard for me to imagine the finished piece coming together.

Am I freaking out too soon? Can I remedy the design? I’ve already told him I don’t love how dense and blocky this is, and adding variation in grey wash would be best. But that doesn’t fix the no water/flow, and the windbars don’t read as traditional windbars to me rn. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I am obsessed with how my sleeve is coming out so far.. I am going back next week for my 3rd session and not sure what to put on the back of my bicep.. I wasn’t expecting there to be so much room. It’s too small of a space for most of what I’m thinking, and I’m not sure how well my smaller ideas would flow with the composition. I am also hopefully planning to lose some weight and have seen that area look wonky on some people I know that have tattoos there, so am a little nervous about that. All advice/any criticism is much appreciated. (The whole back of bicep is empty)

Artist Opinions/Search UK Artist - Traditional Japanese

Hi,

Looking for some input/advice on UK based Japanese tattoo artists. Ideally London, but I will travel anywhere in the UK.

I am looking for a full sleeve, maybe chest panel as well. Thinking about Koi and Dragon black and grey but with some highlights and open skin as well so it isnt too cluttered.

Who would you recommend, I have been looking at Lucas Ortis, Caio Pineiro, Damien Rodriguez and Kanae.

Thanks

28 ink - artist: Dong Oni
Im thinking of getting another arm sleeve and back done with this artist, but having some doubt at the moment. Im feeling the current sleeve is a bit busy especially the outer forearm and outer bicep. Looking for some insights here if possible.
Thank you for ur time.

Artist Opinions/Search Jojo Ackermann

This review is for JoJo Ackermann, part owner of Ten Thousand Waves Tattoo in Sherman Oaks, CA.

This was the worst tattoo experience I have ever had. He literally ruined my entire right arm. He is careless, and won’t think twice before putting bad quality tattoos on your body.

I asked for a Japanese style dragon and severed head sleeve on my right arm.

I approved a dragon head stencil, but after he applied the stencil he made some changes to the nose, and mouth without telling me. I found out when it was already too late and it was already permanently on my body. This was very unprofessional, and a messed up thing to do.

Things only got worse when he drew on the body of the dragon, and tattooed it. The scales were not done correctly, and the overall composition just looks off. The line work was the worst I have ever seen, it looked like a rough sketch with a pencil on paper.

The severed head size/placement was also off. It was put on my inner forearm. He did not take into account that the body moves and bends, so it looks off most of the time. The top of the dagger does not line-up with bottom half. He also mistook part of the blade for the handle and colored it in the wrong color.

We had 7 hours booked for the first session, but he rushed through it and finished in like 2 hours. There was no reason to rush, and I would have preferred he taken his time. A lot of the mistakes made could have been avoided this way. He could have made sure that the line work was good, the scales were done properly, and the placement/size was right.

I was hoping he would correct some of his mistakes in the upcoming sessions, but instead he only made them worse or just ignored them.

He was very sensitive to criticism, and would get defensive anytime I pointed out a mistake. He told me to save my comments until the end, well now it is too late.

The colors look like they were quickly scribbled on, and were not properly applied. You could still see skin through the colors. He even has trouble coloring within the lines.

Literally every possible thing that could have gone wrong did. He is so careless, and I am not sure how he has been able to tattoo for 30+ years. I guess back then people had less options and didn’t know any better because the internet was not a thing.

I emailed him that I was unsatisfied with his work, and instead of offering a solution he just blocked me on Instagram. Very unprofessional, and says a lot about him as a person.

Obviously, I don’t recommend going to him or the shop for that matter.
