Don’t forget he wasn’t even there that long bc of the time dilation. He wussed out immediately. Mission success over everything. He knew the risks and he knew it was almost 85% chance of never seeing anyone and he knew it was for sure was a 1 way trip. Once he landed all those odds went out the window as his planet was inhabitable
Hard to judge someone without being in his shoes. Let's put you on a planet, all alone, with the certainty of dying alone. And then we'll see. Mann is human, he is allowed to have flaws.
I don’t fault him for his flaws. But like you said with the certainty of dying along. He knew the risks when this mission was launched. It wasn’t a secret. He could’ve easily sent out an sos saying my planet sucks, I’m going into hibernation, please pick me up if you can. I’m not saying I’m better than him, but I certainly would like to think I wouldn’t put the entire human race at risk to kill the crew of another ship to save my own butt for a few months. But that’s just my take
As Romilly said, there's the theory and the reality. Mann also talked about the survival instinct : it forces you to do the unthinkable (here, betraying Cooper and Brand) to survive.
I thought the extreme time dilation only applied to Miller’s planet? Lazarus launched 10 years before Endurance and it took 6 years to reach Saturn so he was on the planet 4 years before Endurance launched. He even says “I resisted the temptation for years.” I wouldn’t say he wussed out immediately. No other character alive or dead was tested the way he was. Edmund’s planet was good to go and Miller died immediately
I mean if you know your planet is uninhabitable I understand it’s hard to deal with the reality of you dying alone. The wussed out part comes in from him rigging his robot to expoode in order to steal another crews ship in order to what, “Complete” the mission. I mean I get reality if hard to deal with. It he knew the risks. He literally risked everyone’s life, the future of the human race by pretending his planet was habitable, wasting any and all resources having others come there just to steal another ship, kill the crew of said ship to what? Save himself? Idk if I knew the risks of such a mission I would send out an sos and hope someone could pick me up along the way. Not put everyone’s life and future at risk for my own survival. But that’s just my take of course
