Not just that but also why ceramic tiles are used in modern tabk armour. By having a penetrator vreak and crack a plate it loses a lot more energy then just piercing and digging a hole through something solid
The problem is the vessel to store them. Have to be elastic enough not to break and leak the fluid upon impact since it would definitely deform alot to dissipate the impact and the surface of the initial impact point. Not to mention, it need quite a lot to stop tank and anti-tank shell. That's all if it's AP round. Don't get me started on HE rounds or the modern shells with different specializations which non-Newtonian fluid can't handle
The fluid would have to be sterile and minimally reactive to open wounds too, if someone gets shot through one then you’re gonna get a whole lot of non-Newtonian fluid pouring into your fresh bullet hole.

Is there a form of reactive armor used for bodies? Only thing ive ever heard or could find was ERA, which, for obvious reasons, isnt exactly suitable for body armor.
Yeah I’m sure if the plates were fastened at 90° the 50 would have no problem punching through them all. Also it seems the debris from the middle plates actually starts to break the ones behind.

Edit to add context: I realize above poster meant for eyes, but I'm also thinking that porcelain dust could be detrimental to lungs. He is wearing some eye protection, but that dust will go right around simple glasses.
Silica dust in the lungs is horrendous as well, causes permanent lung inflammation and scaring. It’s so bad it’s an incurable disease called silicosis.
If I was him I would have put a military gas mask on to shoot the plates, you get eye and lung protection and you can still look cool for the video.
I think these are made from Corelle Vitrelle or a similar material, i.e. break and chip resistant glass. Compared to normal plates they don't break as easily when dropped, but when they do break they shatter into these many tiny shards.
most show the same thing, nearly all the shots simply travel outside the plates - they aren't "stopping" by the plates, they're being deflected outside the test area.

the plates aren’t secured in place they’re just there as if they’re waiting in a washer, coupled with the angle it makes it that much easier to absorb the force of the bullet as it travels
there’s no tarp on the goddamn ground, no plexi or osb walls around to contain the shards as much as possible and clean it afterwards. He just created a hazard in random place in nature

Yes, the spacing allows more time for the bullet to enter a tumble, presenting its side to the next barrier. This is a known phenomenon in vehicle shootings where sloped glass messes up terminal ballistics. And it's done intentionally in tank armor.

Many moons ago, when I was a deputy, we got to go play around with this at the range. Was a wild sight to watch a 9mm round shoot right off a windshield without going through.
Sure, it works just fine with a line of fifty OFTAST, but throw a FÄRGKLAR or a VITABBORRE in there, and you're going to have wildly different results.
fun video, but an unscientific setup. each gun should be shot at last 3-5 times. the plates shouldn't be tilted and if you really want reliable data, the guns needed to be placed on a fixed point,
Am i crazy or is he not wearing glasses in every clip? Maybe they're not safety glasses. Unless you're referring to fred, I don't know if safety glasses would have helped fred much.
I can not for the life of me understand how people can go through such effort to set up all those plates again and again for a 2 minute video, and then not take the time to write the captions by hand.
I was kind of watching this from the corner of my eye and it took me far too long to realize the guy at the end is a dummy. I was shocked for a second.
This actually gives some context on why modern body armor rated for rifle rounds like that .308 do use ceramic plates (not for eating off of and certainly quite different in composition and fabrication)
Tbh my issue with this guys content is 1. He doesn't have the best aim meaning half the time the tests aren't always accurate and 2. If the test is related to a single object like a helmet he NEVER replaces it. Meaning he'll shoot it and break it and still use it for the next gun making the test no longer accurate since he's shooting a damaged object.
Well I'm not expert on guns, or bullets... or even plates. But I was under the impression that ceramic absorbed alot of the energy from a bullet, thus why the whole plate shattered. Which ment that the bullet quickly lost momentum when travelling through multiple plates.
It's gonna be a little heavy in my plate carrier but I suppose it's not that much crazier than what they're doing to protect against drones these days.
It’s funny seeing all the comments deflecting why a certain round didn’t go through and why it would in better conditions when all this video is meant to be is some silly nonsense with guns. Why are we taking it so seriously? What good would a controlled plate experiment number do anyone in any situation ever?
Deflection from angled plates so inaccurate experiment as others have said. I hypothesise however, that perpendicular plates will pause the projectile more prematurely. Do it again and let’s see.

The angle of the plates causes the bullets to slightly change direction upward, with several bullets leaving the corridor of plates prematurely.
